Time to nominate your additional monthly read for July.

I'm mixing it up a little bit this month. July is the start of the Summer holidays, with many people getting on a plane and jetting off to some foreign land.

So for this month, I'm asking for nominations in the genre of Travel. Only books classified as travel on it's top two (genre) shelves will be accepted.

If you're struggling to think of someting from this genre, you can take a look at the following links for inspiration:
http://www.goodreads.com/genres/travel
http://www.goodreads.com/award/choice...
http://www.goodreads.com/genres/trave...

- When nominating please make sure you include the book link or book cover link. This can be done by clicking on the ' add book / author' link above the comment box.
Your nomination will not count if not in this format.

- Please refrain from nominating any book that is already scheduled to read as part of the Goodreads Choice Award Book Club. These can be found at http://www.goodreads.com/group/booksh...

- Please do not nominate a second (or later) book in a series read (as members of the group may not have read the previous books).
Your nomination will be not be counted if you do.

- Only one nomination per person will be accepted (if more than one is nominated, the first book posted will be accepted).

- Nominations will close on Sunday 19th May, 5pm GMT and will be followed by a poll.

--------
Books nominated so far:
Hidden Cities: My Journey into the Secret World of Urban Exploration
The Lost Girls: Three Friends. Four Continents. One Unconventional Detour Around the World.
The Geography of Bliss: One Grump's Search for the Happiest Places in the World
Love with a Chance of Drowning
An Embarrassment of Mangoes: A Caribbean Interlude
The Caliph's House: A Year in Casablanca
Better Than Fiction: True Travel Tales from Great Fiction Writers
A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail

Just to give everyone a heads up; I've been checking and while all the books are available to buy or borrow in some way, majority of them are not available in all formats. You might want to check your favourite format and see it's available before making your decision when the poll is open for voting.

Sarah | 1467 comments I would like to nominate the Pulitzer Prize winner The Orphan Master's Son The Orphan Master's Son by Adam Johnson . Please let me know if this works. I know it would take us to North Korea. It is historical fiction and the author was actually let into the country. We would learn about a country most of us are probably very ignorant to due to how closed off and politically controlled this country is. I am pretty sure there is probably not one person in this group living in N Korea now. So I don't know if it is about travel per say but we would all be able to travel to this country through this book and also get to discuss The Pulitzer Pride winner. - a very honored literary award.

Sarah | 1467 comments Plus we could use it toward our 2012 Goodreads challenge.

Anima Miejska | 1698 comments Following your advice, Lynn, I checked the link and want to nominate Hidden Cities My Journey into the Secret World of Urban Exploration by Moses Gates . The book seems extremely interesting, especially to me as a urban environmental psychologist :), I'm going to read it regardless of the voting score :D.

Sarah - The bad news is it's not classified as Travel on Goodreads. The good news is that if you do read the book, it will go towards your challenge :)

Jojo (jojosbooknook) | 717 comments I'm going to change my nomination to The Lost Girls: Three Friends. Four Continents. One Unconventional Detour Around the World.. I went back and looked at the other one, I assumed that a Bill Bryson would definitely be travel, but it seems he's branching out in to linguistics. I thought he'd be traveling across the US to find the origins of phrases, but after reading some reviews it doesn't seem like he does. So I'm changing to one that's definitely travel!

Cathie (catitude) | 1511 comments Just a word of caution to people using the link; not all books are really travel books - like the first one The Time I Joined A Circus - it's a YA fantasy book; don't know how it got on the list other than 3 people put it on one of their shelves marked travel.

Travel should be at least in the first 2 shelf listings for it to be a "travel" book as defined by publishers.

Anima, your choice is perfect! Sounds like a great book :-)

Sarah, travel books are usually true in nature, not fiction; sort of like a memoir of where the author travelled to and their experiences, not the telling of someone else's story. The Orphan Master's Son is an excellent book, so I've heard, just not a travel genre book. (Keep it for another additional reads poll :-)

Oh thanks Cathie, I was meant to put that but totally forgot!
(I blame tiredness and a hangover)

Cathie (catitude) | 1511 comments Good weekend eh, Lynn ;-) lol

Another good link is http://www.goodreads.com/award/choice...
In 2011 Goodreads Choice Awards had a Travel and Outdoors Winning Category; there are a lot of good titles here :-)

That is why I was checking so I could nominate something else but I will wait on this one and re nominate because I think it is an important book we could all read together and would create a lot of discussion. I will get to it eventually regardless.

This is a tough one! I'm going to need a little time to think before nominating. Thanks for all the links.

Jenn S. (Book Buzz) (jennsbookbuzz) | 64 comments Perfect for summer! I nominate "An Embarrassment of Mangoes: A Caribbean Interlude"
by Ann Vanderhoof

Brightness (brightnessreads) | 429 comments I'm a little confused by the criteria. Not sure where to look for the shelves. Would any of these work?
Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter The Paris Wife by Paula McLain Wild From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed A Spear of Summer Grass by Deanna Raybourn Out of Africa by Karen Blixen

message 18: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 1467 comments I know beautiful ruins is fiction - just finished and loved it. Wild fits criteria but already set to do this group read - it is a 2012 award winner for Goodreads. Is Paris Wife fiction? If you read above comments there are plenty of shelves posted for this genre and an explanation for criteria.

Brightness (brightnessreads) | 429 comments Oh I see it now. I was on my ipad and the links weren't showing up! Now I see them on my computer. I'll have to think some more. This is a good idea Lynn! ;)

I loved An Embarrassment of Mangoes. However, the sequel, The Spice Necklace, I was not able to get through. Amazing how the story continues and one book is so much better than the other.

Good to know...I did not know there was a sequel. Can the first one stand alone or is it a cliff hanger where you have to read the second??

Thanks Karlee, wasn't sure how people how would react especially as it seemed there was some confusion. I'm just trying to mix it up a little so we don't end up with the same kind of nominations / books each month. I'll throw one of these in once in a while but will go back to our usual open nominations for other months.

Sorry I didn't get to answer your questions (I've been a bit too busy at work today to get on during the day) but glad to see you worked it out on your own :)

I'm all for mixing it up. I'm excited to see what will be nominated in this poll. :)

Alycia (bookhound18) There's at least 3 on the lists that are on my TBR shelf. Hmmmm....I guess I'll nominate A Walk in the Woods Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson . I read approx. half of that one already and it would give me the push I need to finish it. lol I take forever reading non-fiction!
