I would like to nominate the Pulitzer Prize winner The Orphan Master's Son
. Please let me know if this works. I know it would take us to North Korea. It is historical fiction and the author was actually let into the country. We would learn about a country most of us are probably very ignorant to due to how closed off and politically controlled this country is. I am pretty sure there is probably not one person in this group living in N Korea now. So I don't know if it is about travel per say but we would all be able to travel to this country through this book and also get to discuss The Pulitzer Pride winner. - a very honored literary award.
Plus we could use it toward our 2012 Goodreads challenge.
Following your advice, Lynn, I checked the link and want to nominate
. The book seems extremely interesting, especially to me as a urban environmental psychologist :), I'm going to read it regardless of the voting score :D.

I'm going to change my nomination to The Lost Girls: Three Friends. Four Continents. One Unconventional Detour Around the World.. I went back and looked at the other one, I assumed that a Bill Bryson would definitely be travel, but it seems he's branching out in to linguistics. I thought he'd be traveling across the US to find the origins of phrases, but after reading some reviews it doesn't seem like he does. So I'm changing to one that's definitely travel!
Just a word of caution to people using the link; not all books are really travel books - like the first one The Time I Joined A Circus - it's a YA fantasy book; don't know how it got on the list other than 3 people put it on one of their shelves marked travel.Travel should be at least in the first 2 shelf listings for it to be a "travel" book as defined by publishers.

Sarah, travel books are usually true in nature, not fiction; sort of like a memoir of where the author travelled to and their experiences, not the telling of someone else's story. The Orphan Master's Son is an excellent book, so I've heard, just not a travel genre book. (Keep it for another additional reads poll :-)

In 2011 Goodreads Choice Awards had a Travel and Outdoors Winning Category; there are a lot of good titles here :-)

I'm a little confused by the criteria. Not sure where to look for the shelves. Would any of these work?
I know beautiful ruins is fiction - just finished and loved it. Wild fits criteria but already set to do this group read - it is a 2012 award winner for Goodreads. Is Paris Wife fiction? If you read above comments there are plenty of shelves posted for this genre and an explanation for criteria.

I loved An Embarrassment of Mangoes. However, the sequel, The Spice Necklace, I was not able to get through. Amazing how the story continues and one book is so much better than the other.

Good to know...I did not know there was a sequel. Can the first one stand alone or is it a cliff hanger where you have to read the second??

Thanks Karlee, wasn't sure how people how would react especially as it seemed there was some confusion. I'm just trying to mix it up a little so we don't end up with the same kind of nominations / books each month. I'll throw one of these in once in a while but will go back to our usual open nominations for other months.

. I read approx. half of that one already and it would give me the push I need to finish it. lol I take forever reading non-fiction!

I'm mixing it up a little bit this month. July is the start of the Summer holidays, with many people getting on a plane and jetting off to some foreign land.
So for this month, I'm asking for nominations in the genre of Travel. Only books classified as travel on it's top two (genre) shelves will be accepted.
