N | 68 comments I notice that a lot of books have a 'series' name and number included as part of the title of the book (visible when viewing Editions or editing), though not always, and
the series name in the title doesn't necessarily match the name of the goodreads managed series.

The manual remains silent on this, but I'm guessing this shouldn't be done now but maybe was a former practice?

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments Since the formal series function does not display the series name in all places it is still acceptable to add the series in the format specified in the librarians manual in the title field.

Some librarians choose not to add it and that is fine also. If the series info is in the title field then it should NOT be removed

This can happen when a series has been translated. The official series gets the original language; the series in the title can get the series-title in the translation language.

Ah thanks yes, I see it is talked about. No worries, I will NOT remove them.

In this case http://www.goodreads.com/work/edition... the series is called "Thomas Cromwell Trilogy" but all the books titles have "Thomas Cromwell". I guess if someone renames the series, this is what happens.

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments Yep some people do not use the words trilogy or series in the wording, it can be superfluous

No, the manual does not stay silent. What it says is that the series info "...may be included..." to the title field; then sets out the exact format if you are including.
That section is under book title editing heading and repeated at http://www.goodreads.com/help/show/26...

On book's data page, the series link shows shaded in parenthesis after title whether or not typed in title field. Other sections of manual explain how search and display features handle title info inside parentheses.

Elsewhere ( search, member shelves, ...) series info only shows if typed in title field.

Best I remember every time it came up and a ruling/consensus was asked for -- either with or without series info in title was acceptable.

(Some members and authors try to put in to create a series or add books to a series — which briefly actually was how series worked — without realizing it takes a librarian to create, edit, or add to series)

Carolyn (seeford) | 573 comments Sometimes it is just imported in that format. The import is not always coming in with the series name that was chosen to use at GR (we use the primary sources to determine, like the author's website.)
For the US-editions, anyway, I have seen that happen quite a bit.

Sylvie (sylview) | 189 comments Also, series can change names. For example, the linked series above started as Wolf Hall #1, #2... and then was changed at some point.

I'm pretty sure I updated a lot of those titles because someone had already changed some to Thomas Cromwell #1... and I changed the rest for uniformity. (And because I like to see the series title on my bookshelves and it doesn't show up otherwise).

I don't think "Trilogy" was in the series title when I did that (I don't think it should be there so I think I would have noticed), but I can't see any of the changes in the log apart from the original series name of Wolf Hall.
