Rhistel sits down on a cold stone bench carving a small piece of wood with one of his daggers while whistling softly.
Corazon slipped past her personal guard, who had been issued after the attack on her years before, and out into the courtyard. She needed the freedom that had been stripped from her that night, all because of her overprotective father. Spotting her older brother sitting on a stone bench in the distance, she smiled as she approached him. Because he was the Amir's least favorite child, Cora had been banned from speaking to him even though they were siblings. Apparently he was 'a bad influence' on her.
"Riss." Cora greeted her older brother formally, making him aware of her arrival.
"Riss." Cora greeted her older brother formally, making him aware of her arrival.
"Cora," he smiles and bows his head for her in respect, "how are you?" Rhistel hasn't talked to any of his siblings in a long time, partly because he disliked them and also because they were told not to talk to him. Of all his siblings Cora was his favorite.
"I'm okay. Father is a pain as usual." Even though she was the favorite daughter, she was still required to address the Amir as formally as possible.
"Does not surprise me," Rhistel stops carving and looks up at her, "so, why are you talking to me? If father catches you god knows what he will do."
Cora sighed. "He's so overprotective after the incident that I can't do anything without being watched. I can't do anything anymore. So I snuck away. This isn't the first time."
"The guards will betray you and tell father that you snuck away from them, you mustn't do these things that will get you in trouble," he sighs sadly.
"Well my guard happens to like me." Cora insisted. "He's a good guy with a kind heart." She didn't realize that she had him wrapped around her finger.
"A guard that dares to betray his king," Rhistle smirks, "how interesting, do you know if he is apart of the rebellion?"
"No." Cora frowned. She had been kept in the dark about anything to do with the rebellion. "I don't know."
"I thought this guard liked you, you'd think this guard would tell you, I guess you are not as close to him as you think," he says his jerk side taking over.
"Well I don't like to pry!" Cora snapped, feeling defensive. "And I think we're good friends. I'd trust him with my life."
"I don't think he would trust you with his," Rhistel smirked laughing slightly, "I trust you with my life dearest sister."
Grumbling, Cora shoved her brother slightly. Even though he was frustrating, it was nice to talk to her siblings for more than a few minutes at a time without supervisors. She'd been told more than once that she was too trusting anyway, so maybe Rhistel was right about her guard. "You're just a big jerk, you know that?"
She grinned. "I can tolerate it. I don't know if anyone else can though."
"Well I live my life for me, not them, so they will have to deal with it, this is who I am and IM not changing," he said strongly.
Cora looked down to where her hands were resting in her lap. "I'm glad someone in our family has the guts to live for themselves." Thinking of all her siblings that listened to what their father had to say, she frowned. They all seemed so cold and distant.
"Eventually they will find their voices, I guess I just found mine earlier," he said trying to get Cora to feel better.
"Yeah." Cora watched the people as they walked by, minding their own business. It hurt her knowing they were all oppressed by her father, having little to no free will. She wished she could be more like Riss and stand up for her people knowing it was right.
"Why don't we turn tat frown upside down?" he asked handing her the whistle he had been carving, he was very skilled at carving though he had taught himself how to do it.
She smiled at the gift from her brother. "Thank you!" She pulled him in for a hug. His gift was a small gesture, but it meant a lot to her.
"Your welcome my dear Cora," he hugged her back smiling on the inside and out. Her happiness pleased him more than anything, she was the only person he would die for, well her and the people.
"I wish everyone in our family was like you." Corazon blurted.
"I wish their morals were the same as mine," he patted the top of her head endearingly, "I can be mean sometimes but I know right from wrong."
"Well, yeah. I guess you can be a jerk a lot of the time, but the people really seem to notice that you're different from our father." Cora smiled teasingly.
"There isn't much I can do about that though, all I can do is sit here and hope for something good to come, I have no power here," he shook his head ashamed of himself, "I wish there was something more I could do for our people."
Kav had galloped home as fast as he could, but he was still late. Athamar had stumbled and thrown him just outside of the city; he did his best to hide his limp as he made his way through the courtyard. With any luck, he could sneak back to his room and change his muddied armor before anyone noticed he'd been missing all day.
"There isn't anything though." Cora stated. "What were you doing here sitting by yourself before I got out here? Just out of curiosity."
Kav limped around the corner and froze. Corazon sat on a bench next to his brother Rhistel. What on earth? he thought. Since when were Cora and Rhiss on speaking terms? Damn. Now he'd have to explain himself. "Am I interrupting anything?" He said dryly, steadying himself on his good knee.
"Nothing," he said to the brother he hated the most, "I had an infected cut and forced Cora to come look at it, she says its fine though, right Cora?" he looked at her trying to keep her out of trouble.
"Wonderful," he rolled his eyes and ran a hand through his hair. "Glad to see you're endangering our sister because of a scratch."
Freezing up for a bit, she just nodded instead. Inside she was saddened that the conversation between her and Rhistel was over. A worried expression took over her face as she noticed Kav leaning heavily on one leg. "Are you okay Kav? You're not hurt are you?"
"Don't try to act alright." Cora stood up and pointed a finger to his chest. "You're limping."
"As if you would know," Kav shot back to Rhistel. He winced again and looked at Cora, only containing his temper against Rhiss because of her presence. "I told you, I'm fine. Athamar threw me, but it's nothing."
"Are you sure?" She questioned. She couldn't help but worry, they were siblings. Then again, she would worry if anyone were hurt.
"I'll be okay," he said again. If they were alone, he'd accept her help, but Rhiss was staring daggers at him. He didn't want to show weakness in front of someone who exasperated him without end.
Nodding, Cora accepted his answer.
"I must take my leave," he said out load but meant it for Cora, "if Im in his presence for a moment longer I may die from lack of excitement."
Kavanel narrowed his eyes and looked at his brother. Not for the first time, he regretted the animosity between them. Rhiss would fit perfectly among the rebellion, if only Kav was willing to divulge his secret. But in the end, Rhiss wouldn't have the strength to do what was necessary to free their kingdom. So he ignored his brother and looked up at the castle. "I will speak with you later," he said to Cora quietly.
As Rhistel left the court yard he looked back at Cora and waved goodbye. He probably wouldn't return for a while, he was going off on one of his adventures.
Cora gave a slight wave in response to her brother before turning to Kav with a broken hearted expression in her eyes. "Why does everyone in this family hate each other so much?"
Kav grimaced and sank onto the bench, stretching out his knee. "Because we keep too many secrets from each other," he replied grimly. Now that Rhiss was gone, he didn't have to pretend. His hands unstrapped the armor covering his kneecap and pulled it off. The inside was coated in blood.
Cora gasped at the sight of blood. "Kavanel! I knew you weren't alright!"
"It's not as bad as it looks," he lied. "Will you help me get the armor off? I don't want my servant to know I'm injured."
Glaring at her brother, Cora nodded before helping him with his armor.
