Alex Strohschein Salutations all,

I have been racking my brain trying to find a certain quote that I KNOW is in "The Pilgrim's Progress". If anyone knows what passage/quote I am referring to would you mind posting it here? I would be very grateful. I am looking for the passage that discusses how the Devil can use good things and twist them into evil for devious purposes.

Roger Harned a possible thought:
And as they were thinking about the way, behold a man black of flesh, but covered with a very light robe, come to them, and asked them why they stood there.

They answered, they were going to the Celestial City, but knew not which of these ways to take.
“Follow me,” said the man, “it is thither that I am going.”

So they followed him in the way that but now came into the road, which by degrees turned, and turned them so far from the city that they desired to go to, that in a little time their faces were turned away from it; yet they follow him.
... Christian: Then said Christian to his fellow, Now do I see myself in an error. Did not the shepherds bid us beware of the Flatterer?

Alex Strohschein Thank you but unfortunately that is not it. It is proving to be quite the elusive quote!

Roger Harned Try Stage 2 -- this on grace OR the reasons the Professor in the Iron Cage cannot be saved.

Then said Christian, What means this?
The Interpreter answered,
This fire is the work of grace that is wrought in the heart;
He that casts water upon it, to extinguish and put it out, is the devil:
“He that casts water upon the work of grace is the devil.
but in that thou seest the fire, notwithstanding, burn higher and hotter, thou shalt also see the reason of that.
So he had him about to the back side of the wall, where he saw a man with a vessel of oil in his hand, of the which he did also continually cast (but secretly) into the fire.
Then said Christian, What means this?
The Interpreter answered,
This is Christ, who continually, with the oil of his grace,
maintains the work already begun in the heart;
by the means of which, notwithstanding what the devil can do,
the souls of his people prove gracious still. [2 Cor. 12:9]
And in that thou sawest that the man stood behind the wall to maintain the fire;
this is to teach thee, that:
i”It is hard for the tempted to see how this work of grace is maintained in the soul.

Alex Strohschein Hmm...perhaps that is it. It could very well be or, if not, I think it is similar to what I was searching for. Thank you!
