I just can't stand reading anything without a happy ending

I absolutely love your books btw!

Monique (beamerandi) | 21 comments I would have to say Divergent. I don't hate the book but I didn't find it as great as everyone was saying. For me, it was simply 'okay'

You read my books? Cool! The name 'Arielle' should have been a dead giveaway huh? Lol!

HAHA well, when I was done reading Divergent, I thought 'I'm so done with this series' HAHA so I most likely won't be reading the second book. I'm still debating whether i'm going watch the movie, Divergent. I have it on my laptop but I haven't bothered with it yet.

I began The Poisonwood Bible several times but the last time I was determined to finish it and guess what I also hated it. Along with Pillars of the Earth which all love and first on my list Moby Dick.

We all have our own opinions and I'm not afraid to tactfully voice mine.

Srividya Vijapure (theinkedmermaid) | 13 comments Several -- Fifty Shades of Grey is one such book that I couldn't read at all.

Similarly, The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai was another book that most people liked but I did not, hence did not finish it.

The Great Gatsby is another book, which although I did finish, I did not like very much. Similarly, Bleak House and Hard Times were two books that I did not enjoy as much as others did.

Moon Over Manifest

SPOILER ALERT

One of the flashbacks that Miss Sadie tells to Abilene kept switching issues. So confusing, and it's totally unrelated to the plot!

Karen M | 68 comments I've read two books that although I finished them I could not understand how in the world they were best sellers. You may think I'm crazy when I tell you they were One Day by David Nicholls (I hated his idea of how a woman would act hated it !! ) and the other was A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley (another I felt made women look stupid).

message 162: by Emily (new)

Emily | 68 comments Definitely the Divergent series, especially Allegiant. Everyone hates it because (view spoiler). I hated it because the plot is boring and doesn't line up with the first two books of the trilogy at all. I didn't even like Divergent though when I first read it. I found Tris extremely unlikable but after reading Allegiant and seeing how bad it was I have a newfound appreciation for the first one.

I also dislike the Mortal Instruments series. I read the first three and attempted to read the fourth but I just couldn't make myself do it. I just couldn't care less about the characters. The only one I could connect to at all was Simon. Also it was like a weak shallow version of Harry Potter in many of its plot points.

The Fault in our Stars. It was overhyped for me...

Emily | 68 comments Claire wrote: "The Fault in our Stars. It was overhyped for me..."

I agree that The Fault in our Stars is overhyped even though I still enjoyed it. It's a very simple story and though it has a lot of meaning behind it, it's not the truly amazing revolutionary book some people seem to think it is. And I think because of all the hype people who would have enjoyed it for what it was are disappointed. I think part of the reason of why its so overhyped is because many people who don't read a lot read it. Maybe this sounds snobby but someone who doesn't read a lot who reads a good book will think it's amazing because they haven'tt experienced the variety of books that are out there.

message 165: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Hmm I think it's more the difference of what appeals to certain individuals rather than the variety/quantity of books read. I mean, I quite enjoyed The Fault in our Stars and I've definitely read my share of other kinds of books.

Though I think on a more general scale, your reasoning is fairly right - especially now that the movie is out. Some books or movies are just hyped to no end and either it takes away the joy of being able to explore the plot without public opinion weighing you down or the story just plain disappoints.

I had that happen with The Book Thief. I liked what I read on the back cover but then it suddenly became the book to read, everyone was telling me how much they adored the book and I was actually looking forward to reading it, but oh my, was I in for a disappointment.
I did try though and I did finish in the end, but it wasn't what I call an enjoyable read.

Or Twilight, wanted to know what the fuss was about and.. yeah really not.

Someone also mentioned James Joyce's Ulysses. Sure, classic literature and fantastic work and all, but I still didn't get through completely - maybe some day I'll pick it up again and actually finish it ;-)

Do you guys generally stop reading the books for good or do you still continue to the end even if you don't enjoy it?
Some of you already mentioned finishing or not but I'm curious.

If I stop enjoying a book, I would try for a bit more, but I would just stop.
Then, I'll just try to reread it at a later time if I'm still interested

Katie | 31 comments I can not see why Summer House with Swimming Pool by Herman Koch seems to be so popular. I could not like it at all. I did like his novel The Dinner though.

message 168: by Alycia (new)

Alycia (bookhound18) | 149 comments The Book Thief....everybody seems to love that book but I can't get past the writing style. And it's rather boring.

message 169: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 14 comments Yes, I could not get into " the Orphan Master's So " it was all the rave and I couldn't read past the first 40 pages!

message 170: by Ayustika (new)

Ayustika (That Bibliophilic Cauldron) Yes.. This happens.. Especially with the books of Indian authors.

message 171: by [deleted user] (new)

I loathe The Great Gatsby. I also don't like Life of Pi.

message 172: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ashleylaughbox) I recently broke up with a book: Paper Towns by John Green and a series: The Twilight Series. Probably y'all are wondering why this "amazing" book by John Green but seriously, it was VERY GOOD but not that great for me. Maybe I didn't exactly "get" it but I don't know. I had such high expectations and they weren't met.

message 173: by Monique (new)

Monique (beamerandi) | 21 comments Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. I've tried twice and couldn't get myself to finish the books and I'm not even past 1/4 of the book. Also, another book is Divergent. I read the book and, well, let's just say I won't be reading the rest of the series.

message 174: by Mary-ellen (new)

Mary-ellen (missy666) | 545 comments I found The Time Traveller's Wife really slow and boring. I was determined to finish, so I did, I put it in the bathroom and read a page every time I went in there. I just couldn't get any momentum with the story.

message 175: by Stacy (new)

Stacy okun (stacyo40) | 111 comments i didn't like Me Before You, by friend said I was a robot LOL.

message 176: by [deleted user] (new)

I thought Divergent was an awful book. The writing wasn't good at all in my opinion, and I was always confused as to what was going on or where "Tris" was. It was all way too similar to the Hunger Games. Deja vu everywhere

Karen M | 68 comments Schuylar wrote: "I loathe The Great Gatsby. I also don't like Life of Pi."

I forgot how much I disliked Life of Pi, way too repetitious and boring for me. I kept hoping the tiger would eat him and put me out of my misery!

message 178: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (last edited Jul 10, 2014 02:36AM) (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments I don't think I can read any more of this thread... to many books that I have loved have been mentioned... hahaha

I don't often give up on books, but anything by Phillipa Gregory I have struggled with, and I also couldn't finish The Selection and I thought Cinder was dreadful
oh and City of Bones was just blatant plagiarism to me and I couldn't face another in the series

message 179: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte (caelestial) | 33 comments I didn't like Shiver at all. Then, I got that message about re-reading it and just about screamed. I didn't like it. It just felt like twilight all over again. Speaking of which, another book I broke up with is Breaking Dawn. I actually somehow forced my way through the first 2 books.

message 180: by Rahma (new)

Rahma (rahmaabdelrahman) | 2 comments Looking For Alaska by John Green! I did finish it but I have to say I hate that book! Like how is it that famous in the first place?!

message 181: by Michael (new)

Michael Henderson (michael_henderson) | 10 comments Schuylar wrote: "I loathe The Great Gatsby."

I agree. Everyone in the world sings its praises, but I didn't like it. It started out well enough, the writing was excellent, but I couldn't relate.

message 182: by Charlie (new)

Charlie (meprincessyoupeasant) | 12 comments All The Truth That's In Me. I just didn't like the writing style, at all.

message 183: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1144 comments Even though I didn't actually break up with it (once I start a book I have to finish it just so I can hate it correctly), I'd have to say The Glass Castle. Ugh! Everyone who I spoke to who read it said they loved it, but I could not stand it.

message 184: by Heather (new)

Heather (haswilliams) I also used to have a no break up rule but then I was subjected to Fifty Shades. I tried and tried to read that mess, even skipped around which I do a lot even with books I love. But I just couldn't stand it. So boring and annoying.
