Bryan Craig Welcome, Celeste. I hope this group offers you new and exciting history to read about. We have a history of science topic:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how a book should look:

I have the whole of human history as interest, but try to go in-depth on occasion into specific periods or subjects.

Of specific interest to me are the Levant civilizations of the Ancient and Classical eras, the origin and development of organized belief systems/religions and American history.

I am looking forward to reading what you all have to share :-)

Magan (maganbunny) | 1 comments My name is Magan. I live and work in San Francisco, my job is changing at the moment, but what has stayed the same has been my affinity for reading, especially early Greek history, and biographies of powerful political figures. When I am not reading non-fiction, I have found that many of the books I am drawn to, are based on historical situations and figures, often times weaving them into the stories themselves.

Looking forward to discussing with you all :)

Billt4sf | 5 comments Hello, I am Bill, I am a retired physics teacher and software engineer living in San Francisco. I have loved reading about history for a number of years and now I get to do it more!

I'm DELIGHTED to find a large history book club, and you will see some posts from me from time to time.

Just now I was looking for a recommendation for a book on Roman history -- that's why I found your site! -- and I see that "Rubicon" is one of your selections; I will try to get up to speed and participate in the discussion before it ends.

Some of my favorite history books are (let's see if I can do this):

The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich A History of Nazi Germany by William L. Shirer by William L. Shirer

"What Has God Wrought?" by Daniel Walker Howe - Bookreads did not pick up this title!

A World Undone The Story of the Great War, 1914 to 1918 by G.J. Meyer by G.J. Meyer

There are others....

Nice to "meet" you all!

- Bill

Hi Bryan,
Thanks for the welcome. I have read the guidelines and will abide by them as far as I can. I'm blind, but my husband reads to me, and I also download books which I can read with a program called Jaws.
I did recommend a book already, but I was unable to post the cover picture in my reply. Is there anything I can do about this problem?

message 4422: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig Hello Amy. Do you type yourself or does your husband do it for you?

message 4423: by Amy (new)

Amy Riisna No, I can't see well enough to type myself. I hire assistants who speak good English and work the computer for me. Actually it works out quite well. I listen to my messages with a program called Jaws which reads out loud to me. I also use Jaws for reading books.

In answer to your question regarding book covers......if you have an assistant who does your typing for you, the book cover should not be a problem. It is fully explained at the link below; however, we will be aware that your situation is a little different from the rest of our members and take that into consideration. Maureen (meg9000) | 45 comments Hello folks,
I'm Maureen from the suburbs of Atlanta, GA. I work in IT and have a love of language, cultures, travel, history, politics, people, places and ideas. I enjoy historical fiction and often like to surround that with learning about the real history of the people and places. Michener got me started with his wonderful sagas of people and places. Some other recent favorites are Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth and Fall of Giants. I've enjoyed learning about the early modern history of Western Europe and the lines of descent to the throne in England and France from the fabulous TV series, The White Queen (books by Philippa Gregory). I've read about WWII, the history of the Middle East, a bit about India, and am currently filling in my knowledge of the American Revolution with Paul Revere's Ride, Washington's Crossing, To Try Men's Souls, and Angels in the Whirlwind. This seemed like the place to get suggestions for the best books. Looking forward to meeting some of you!

Laura Meyerovich (laurameyerovich) | 11 comments Hi, I am from USA, originally from Russia. I like reading history books, fiction and non-fiction, and always look for good new books to read. I am omnivorous in terms of time period and geography. To prove that I know how to add a link: a book I highly recommend for people interested in XIX century maritime history: Two Years Before the Mast: A Sailor's Life at Sea.

Two Years Before the Mast A Sailor's Life at Sea by Richard Henry Dana Jr.

Jill H. (bucs1960) So glad you joined us, Laura. You will find many good recommendations here for future reading. You made a good try at the citation but forgot the author photo/link. See my example below.

This is how the book you mentioned should look:

LadyKnowledge | 4 comments Hi,

I'm a Canadian living in Scotland. A bit more than an arm-chair historian, I got my BA in history from Concordia and started a PhD in the history of medicine at UMN a few years later.

Among my favourite historians are Sarah Wise (Blackest Street, The Italian Boy, etc) and Judy Walzer Levitt (Brought to Bed, Make Room for Daddy).
