John simply an update on what I posted to you - no self promotion. Made the minor tweak so all is well now. We are delighted however to have you with us.

Hello all,

My name is John Tompkins.....

As a reader I tend to prefer non-fiction or fiction with some type of historical theme. I also like reading books with a bit of political and social insight.

Katy (kathy_h) Welcome, John. Glad you could join us.

We recently finished The Metaphysical Club. We certainly did some interesting social discussing. You might look at the threads for the book. The TOC & Syllabus thread for the book is here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

I want to know so much more but I don't know where to look at. I joined this group in order to gain knowledge because I believe I can learn that here.

@Erik - thank you for attempting the citation - the above shows you our citation format - book cover when available, author's photo when available and author's link - all three were available.

Welcome - we love history teachers from around the world. I always admire folks who can discuss, read and write in multiple languages.

You posted: "At age 17 my historyteacher read to the class from a newly published book. From that moment I was lost"

Did you mean that From that moment I was hooked or enthralled.

Believe me if you asked me to post an intro in Swedish - I would have to go to google translator - I would be hopeless and lost.

You are doing wonderfully and you had a wonderful introduction. I look forward to hearing more about Sweden, history and social science teaching and curriculum in Sweden and about your personal historical interests and topics.

We have a lot here for you to discover and we are all here to help you along the way.

Tack again (smile) You might have said above - no clue or no interest in current affairs and hooked on history if I am understanding you correctly.

You are doing very well with your English - idioms and slang are hard.

Also you said: A period in history that have called my attention in the last few years is the 1800s

You might have meant - A period in history that has captured my attention in the last few years is the 1800s or that has caught my attention.

I'm currently in the U.S. Army, so of course I have a lot of interest in U.S. military and political history, but not exclusively. It's a big world and I've been trying to expand my horizons. While my shelves are filled with traditional academic history, I really enjoy getting into the personal stories of people who have lived through turbulent times - I'm partial to Studs Terkel, and thoroughly enjoyed Marjane Satrapi's 'Persepolis' books.

I look forward to taking part in discussions!

I grew up in Brooklyn, NY, moved to Boca Raton, FL when I was 16 and joined the Army when I was 20. I spent 15 years in, climbing from PV1 to SSG and then switching over to the Warrant Officer corps. I was medically retired as a CW3. I did 4 combat tours (3 to Iraq and 1 to Afghanistan) and was awarded a Bronze Star for my efforts during "The Surge" in Iraq. After the Army, I worked for Gulfstream Aerospace, Rotary Corp International and the US Government. Now I am a full time student working towards becoming a High School History Teacher.

As far as my History reading goes, I am particularly obsessed with World War II, most modern Military History, the History of the US 3rd Infantry Division, Egypt, the Knights Templar, Arthurian Legend and the history of Mythology.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how a book should look:

General George Washington A Military Life by Edward G. Lengel by Edward G. Lengel Edward G. Lengel
