Hi Erina,

I'm Kate, an American living and working in Korea. I've been very involved in the Korean culture for about 10 years now although I'm not ethnically Korean.

If you find any good books about Korean history, especially anything 조선 or pre, it would be awesome if you could let me know about them, it's hard finding various books in English on the subject and my Korean really isn't up to novel-reading standards yet, ha ha.

As a recomendation for you, have you read Pearl S. Buck's 1963 novel Living Reed: A Novel of Korea? It's historical fiction but gives a good visual on upper-class life in Korea between 1881 Joseon though the Japanese occupation/WW2.

Jill H. (bucs1960) Welcome, John....we are glad you joined us. Let me get you started with a link to WWII, one of your interests.

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Thomas Bjerk | 3 comments Greetings. My name is Tom. I am an avid reader and love the idea of a group dedicated to history. My love of reading is only surpassed by my desire to learn about our collective past. I will get on a cycle of reading about a region in a specific era, then move on in chronological order. I try not to limit myself to a specific subject, but military history (from all eras) dominates my library. My favorite subject thus far is European history during the napoleonic wars. Lately, I've been reading about World War II from the Russian perspective. I find it fascinating to take a subject I think I have a handle on, and have it turned upside down by a change in perspective! I haven't spent much time learning about the history of the Asian continent. So I will most likely be looking to the Far East for my next area of study. Any recommendations? Japan? The khans? The Huns? India? China?
Best Regards,
T.

Timothy L. Hello, My name is Tim. I am a history buff. I like biographies of historic figures like Stalin or Khrushchev. Or works like T.J. Stiles' book on Jesse James and material like The Worst Hard Times.

I also read Ecclesiastical History concerning specific figures like Peter Waldo, Ludwig Von Zinzendorf, J.A. Comenius or Donatus. I am fascinated by the marginalized and non-populist ideas and people in that realm of history.

I eclectic in my reading and theories concerning history. The winners in history should not be the only things we pay attention to.

Hello Timothy. You hit a couple of my favorite history books that were relatively recently published - Jesse James and The Worst Hard Times. The first was refreshing as a myth buster, and in a way, so was the second. We've heard so much about the Okies and others who fled the Dust Bowl for California, but we hear much less about the ones who toughed it out through the worst of those disastrous times.

Timothy L. Thanks Dave, I traveled the area noted in Worst Hard Times, while reading it. Boice City, XIT Ranch, Baca County Colorado, Dalhart... IT was great! I took a lot of photos too.

I used to travel every bit of Jesse James haunts and the read now brings back memories.

Grant Masson (scottishteacher) | 0 comments Hi my name is Grant Masson and I am a Social Studies teacher at a high school in Indiana. I love history, all of it, but I particularly love the Civil War period within US History and WWII history. My father was older when he had me and he served in the Royal Air Force during WWII so I became a vessel for his stories and experiences. I am originally from Edinburgh Scotland where I grew up. I met my future wife in Scotland while she was on a university exchange program and after we got engaged we decided that The United States would be the place for us to live and raise a family. We have been married for 24 years and have two teenage sons and a menagerie of pets to round out the family. My oldest son is looking at colleges at the moment and is looking to major in history so I have passed on the torch for the love of history to him. My classroom is based around discussion and debate based on evidence from primary and secondary source documents and one of the main reasons I joined the group was to increase my knowledge base of history and pick up on new ideas and theories that I could introduce to my students. I thrive on discussion and can't wait to become involved in the many discussion threads that are available to this group.

It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how a book should look:

The Passage of Power (The Years of Lyndon Johnson, #4) by Robert A. Caro by Robert A. Caro Robert A. Caro

Ashley (age1213) | 2 comments Hi y'all! My name is Ashley!
I'm currently a senior at Ouachita Baptist University, where I'm majoring in Russian and History. I love all aspects of history, but my favorite is Russian and European. I"m not exactly a huge fan of American history. I love to read in my spare time, which isn't much with all my coursework, but I try to carve out time to do so. I look forward to this group!

Michael Harrington | 13 comments Hello,
My name is Michael and I am a political scientist and economist. For pleasure reading I am mostly drawn to history and my favorite time periods are ancient Greece and Rome, Renaissance Italy, and mid to late 19th century Europe. But I enjoy many biographical novels of artists and other creative personalities in history. As a social scientist I am also fascinated with places and times when momentous events and movements helped to define subsequent history.

Welcome, Irshad, we're very glad to have you here.

Here's our topic on Roman history (which I am also very interested in) -

And we have one on British history -
