How much have our reading experiences and lists changed in the last 50 years or so? Take a look at American novelist and poet, Jack Kerouac's, to-read list. How does this compare to yours? Do you think certain literature is essential to your overall education and understanding of literary context? Should we still read any/some of the things of Kerouac's list? (age 18, 1940) What would you add to the 'essential reading list'?

1. Indian scriptures
2. Chinese scriptures
3. Old and New Testament
4. Gibbon and Plutarch
5. Homer (again)
6. Shakespeare (again)
7. Wolfe (always)
ETC. ETC.
Finnegan's Wake
"Outline of history"
Thoreau and Emerson
Joseph Conrad
Proust's "Remembrance"
Dante (again)
