I think the point of the thread was that they CONTINUED to kiss and want to kiss even after they thought they were brother and sister.

They did, in the book of The City of Glass after they found the book of magic.

The point is not that they kissed in the first place, that's a non issue since they didn't realize that they were brother and sister. It is the fact that they continued on in those feelings AFTER they realized that they were brother and sister.

Salome Maybe it's because I grew up reading VC Andrews books (i.e. Flowers in the Attic), that it really didn't phase me. Plus, (view spoiler). So I just accepted it, and kept reading.

Of course not! I don't know if I said that I didn't like them in my review or this thread or both. I only continue with the series for the actual story which is interesting and to see if Simon is going to end up with Isabelle or Maya even though I think Isabelle is better for him. :)

Lex Mori I was spoiled on accident by an essay in Shadowhunters and Downworlders, but that's ok, it cushioned the whole issue for me. Especially as an older sister, I have always been very off-put by even the idea of incest, but it didn't make me love the story or the characters any less. I just spent the whole time still hoping it wasn't true. I'm really excited to read City of Glass and get that whole thing over with.

Really?
Okay, well, at least I have an explanation.
I don't like Clary because she neglects Simon though he's her best friend, eventually leading them to fall apart, him to become a vampire, and her to feel f-ing guilty, like she damn should. To me, she's overly annoying, dull, hopelessly brave, tried and tired, and the worse: she sees something in that **** Jace.

Jace pisses me off more than anyone in the whole book world, more than any antagonist I've ever stumbled upon. He acts high and mighty, stupidly sarcastic, and tries to be humorous when he obviously fails at it. He can give me all his dark and tortured ****, but I don't give a ****, I've seen people fight through things so hard they were vulnerable and soft and they tried so hard to keep things inside in the end, it tore them apart, an outburst, suicide, something. I admire those people for trying to hide it, for fighting it, and being themselves. But Jace is such a jerk, I hate him with every bone in my body. I have no idea what anyone sees in him, honestly. Maybe you admire him his turbulent childhood, for coming out strong and snarky. But he's weak in my eyes, crippled by his cruelness, nearly a mirror of Valentine, whom I also detest. I'd rather see Have as someone scarred by his past, and showing it, displaying his pain, hardened but vulnerable, having some sort of inner beauty. I see nothing beautiful in him. He's twisted and ugly, ten times worse than Clary. I give her props for it at least because she wasn't born into the Shadowhunter world.

The only time I felt sympathy for either of them was when they found out they were brother and sister. It was ridiculously sad. But my best friend, the same one who unfortunately got me to start reading the series in the first place, which I had high expectations for, as it is her favorite series and we have nearly identical book interests, had already spoiled the incestuous situation for me, and I knew the trilogy's outcome, so I honestly didn't feel too bad for the two MCs.
By the way, I only read up to City of Glass. I couldn't stand to read the dreadful series any longer. A shame, because I liked all the other characters besides Clary and Jace.

Please don't hate me for my opinion, all you TMI lovers out there. This is just how I feel.

Oh no I wouldn't hate someone because of their opinion I just wanted to know the reason you hated them, because most people that don't like the main characters just because it's too "Mainstream" for them or whatever. But you are entitled to your opinion just like everyone else. I on the other hand agree with the part about Clary being a douche to Simon, I loved Simon's character. But the reason I like Jace is because he is a douche bag and I think that 2 douchey characters needed to be together...if that makes sense.

Cat Lol. Oh, I wasn't referring to you about the respecting comment. There are people who have insulted me for my opinions. Anyway, I totally get what you mean about the two douche bags thing. I ship Clary and Jace as a couple.

I think that you have a very good observation on the characteristics of Jace and Clary and I totally concur. They are self absorbed and only think of themselves. I do have to disagree with you about Valentine. He is a likable character. At least with him you know what you're going to get. The Seelie queen made some reference at the end of city of glass book that has me intrigued.

@Kendra:LOL. That was pretty obvious by the end of COG.

@Connie: Yeah, I know. That's why I'm surprised by how many people actually like the two of them. They are so self-absorbed that they don't pay mind to those they hurt, think poor Simon.

Valentine is respectable because he is predictable and has reasons for his actions. He is evil, so that's why he's earned my hatred, but there are types of antagonists that are so charismatic and talented that you actually respect them, and you would like them if they weren't evil. Valentine, to me, is that type of antagonist. But damn, he's evil.

And I wouldn't know about the Seelie Queen's remark. It's been quite a long while since I read TMI, and I didn't even really pay much attention to the book. Maybe I'll give it another try someday. I miss Luke, Isabelle, Spec, Magnus, Maia... basically everybody but the two annoying MCs.

message 123: by Connie (new) - rated it 2 stars

Connie If you didn't like the book the first time, don't force yourself a second time. I did that with the Blue Blood series by Melissa De La Cruz and almost put myself off from any YA paranormal stories. When I first heard the Clockwork Princess, I almost stopped the story in the first chapter because it reminded me of that series, and I hated it! I forced myself to finish all of the blue blood books because of compulsion, and it took me a long time to even think of reading another YA story. It's not worth it when I read about your hatred for the characters. I have learned to fast forward on the parts pertaining to Jace and Clary so that I don't have that utter hatred as I did with the other series.

message 128: by Cat (new) - added it

Cat Ah hah ha. Yes... if we didn't get into stupid arguments over it... but we also have a lot in common, like I said, so everything smoothes over fine.

Matilda Rose Well, just like you always know that the main character never actually dies, or at least for long, in one of those meant-to-be grippingly scary scenes, you know that when an author spends a whole book building up this romance and it doesn't have a disclaimer on the front or reviews saying "This is sick", you know that it's just a plot twist that will straighten itself out and it'll all be fine. And un-sick. Just like we knew who Tessa would pick, that Harry Potter wouldn't die, that Katniss would make it out of the arena... It's pretty obvious from the start.

Lauren I thought it was a terribly unfair twist. They already had such strong feelings for each other and though I thought it was a little strange for them to still be intimate with each other I thought it was unrealistic to expect them to be able to just shut their emotions off.

Hilary Evans It wasn't wrong, because they didn't know...But when Valentine told them they were related, I screamed and gagged and texted my friend who told me to read the series to tell her she was a jerk...but then, I hoped Simon and Clary would get together, because I love Simon's character....I will say this without giving too much away. I've read the whole series that is out so far, and the author threw in so many twists and turns and WTF moments that I wasn't sure that I was gonna like how the story turned out at all...At the end of the last book, I can honestly say she made all the plot twists work..I'm thrilled with where the series is at, and I can't wait for the next book...So, hang in there if you're thinking about not reading the rest of the series.

I have gone on. I'm on the book after the Valentine saga. I think it is the 3th book? I'm not reading this, but listening. I still have to skip over the Jace and Clary saga because they are so annoying, but I press on. I'm tired of listening to Clary describe Jaces' love for her, her for him, his fair skin and hair and eyes and face and smile, and teeth and toe nails and anything else that is him or on his person every single time that she sees or thinks about him. I'm over them 3x already, but like all others in the story. The book could be about a 100 pages or 2-3 hours shorter if Ms. Clare would take out the description overkill. It is the 2nd book, we are aware that Clary has flaming red curly hair and Jace is a skinny Adonis. Don't need to hear about it every other chapter. We won't forget what they look like.
