Quotes...

Brilliant!

You may post quotes. No points for repeats, and try to make them significant quotes! As in, "Good morning" isn't exactly Frog-worthy!

message 103: by [deleted user] (new)

You'll also find that there are wizarding proverbs, too. Just read OOTP, the chapter where Mrs. Figg and Harry (and Big D) are walking down Privet Drive. She says quite a few interesting things...

message 104: by [deleted user] (new)

Yay, quotes! Okay, here goes!

“Mr. Moony presents his compliments to Professor Snape, and begs him to keep his abnormally large nose out of other people's business.
Mr. Prongs agrees with Mr. Moony, and would like to add that Professor Snape is an ugly git.
Mr. Padfoot would like to register his astonishment that an idiot like that ever became a professor.
Mr. Wormtail bids Professor Snape good day, and advises him to wash his hair, the slimeball.” ~ J.K Rowling,
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Maggie "Tell me one last thing," said Harry. "Is this real? Or has this been happening inside my head?"
Dumbledore beamed at him, and his voice sounded loud and strong in Harry's ears even though the bright mist was descending again, obscuring his figure.
"Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?"
pg. 723, The Deathly Hallows, American edition
Also:
"No," agreed Dumbledore. "You are a braver man by far than Igor Karkaroff. You know, sometimes I think we Sort too soon..."
He walked away, leaving Snape stricken.
Pg. 680, The Deathly Hallows, American edition
And finally:
Conjunctivitis Curse
A curse that makes the target's eyes hurt badly.
Mentioned: Sirius suggests this as a way of getting past the dragon in the Triwizard Tournament. Krum uses it for the same thing.
Note: Conjunctivitis is a real disease that's also called pink-eye.

Geminio

Description: Creates an identical copy of the target Seen/Mentioned: Used by Hermione Granger on Salazar Slytherin's Locket to disguise her presence from Dolores Umbridge.
Etymology: The Latin word gemini means "twins".
Notes: Also known as the Gemino curse or Doubling Charm

"Hermione screamed in pain, and Harry turned his wand on her in time to see a jeweled goblet tumbling from her grip. But as it fell, it split, became a shower of goblets, so that a second later, with a great clatter, the floor was covered in identical cups rolling in every direction, the original impossible to discern amongst them." —Description of the Gemino curse used in conjunction with the Flagrante curse in the Lestrange Vault in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Maggie For the new chapter (Hogwarts Library), can we add books? If we can:
Quidditch Through the Ages (Kennilworthy Wisp)
A complete history of Quidditch, along with descriptions of the rules, the balls, and various teams.
Standard Book of Spells books 1-7 (Miranda Goshawk)
The standard spell-book for Hogwarts students.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Newt Scamander)
A 'field guide' to magical creatures like thestrals, hippogriffs, and mermaids.

Anjuman Amina "I don't know who Maxime thinks she's kidding. If Hagrid's half-giant, she definitely is. Big bones... the only thing that's got bigger bones than her is a dinosaur."

"Pity you can't attach an extra arm to yours [broom], Malfoy. Then it could catch the Snitch for you."

"I don't go looking for trouble. Trouble usually finds me."

"Are you insane? Of course I want to leave the Dursleys! Have you got a house? When can I move in?"

"Well, I had one that I was playing Quidditch the other night," said Ron, screwing up his face in an effort to remember. "What do you think that means?"
"Probably that you're going to be eaten by a giant marshmallow or something," said Harry, turning the pages of The Dream Oracle without interest.

"Harry, don't go picking a row with Malfoy, don't forget, he's a prefect now, he could make life difficult for you..."
"Wow, I wonder what it'd be like to have a difficult life?" said Harry sarcastically.

"How long have you been 'Big D' then?" said Harry.
"Shut it," snarled Dudley, turning away again.
"Cool name," said Harry, grinning, "but you'll always be Ickle Diddykins to me."
"Shut your face."
"You don't tell her [Aunt Petunia] to shut her face. What about 'popkin' and 'Dinky Diddydums,' can I use them then?"

oh and 1 last spell

Meteolojinx Recanto

used to reduce the effects of weather caused by incantations
used in Deathly Hallows by Arthur Weasley to Ron (disguised by the Polyjuice Potion as Reginald 'Reg' Cattermole from Magical Maintenance) as the best way to clear up the incessant rain in Yaxley's office at the Ministry.

Erecto
Description: Used to erect a tent or other structure. Seen/Mentioned: Used by Hermione Granger to construct a shelter for her, Harry Potter, and Ronald Weasley in 1997.
Etymology: Erectum is past principle of erigere, which is Latin for "to erect".
"...Erecto!" she added, pointing her wand at the misshapen canvas, which in one fluid motion rose into the air and settled, fully constructed, on to the ground before Harry, out of whose startled hands a tent peg soared, to land with a final thud at the end of a guy rope." —Description.[src]

Caterwauling Charm
Def: A magical alarm spell. Makes a high-pitched shriek if set off.
Mentioned: In Deathly Hallows when Harry, Ron, and Hermione Apparate into Hogsmeade and then set it off by accident. The Death Eaters come to investigate and Aberforth Dumbledore saves them by letting them escape into the Hog's Head and pretending that the Patronus that Harry cast to ward off the Dementors was his. The Death Eaters scold him for 'letting his cat out' and setting off the Caterwauling Charm.

Furnunculus Curse
Def: Causes the target to be covered in boils.
Mentioned: Used only in Goblet of Fire. Harry casts it at Draco but it is deflected onto Malfoy.

R--r--riddikulus!' squeaked Neville. There was a noise
like a whip crack. Snape stumbled. He was wearing a

Maggie "I was unfortunate enough in my youth to come across a vomit-flavored one, and since then I have rather lost my liking for them. But, I think I could be safe with a nice toffee...Hmm, alas, earwax."
Dumbledore, Sorceror's Stone, in the hospital wing helping Harry eat the candy that was left for him.

"Right, you've got a crooked sort of cross...that means you're going to have 'trials and suffering' - sorry about that - but there's a thing that could be a sun... hang on... that means 'great happiness'... so you're going to suffer but be very happy..."
"You need your Inner Eye tested, if you ask me..."
Ron and Harry, Divination class, Prisoner of Azkaban
Note: Ron's prediction did come true. Harry suffered a lot in the end of Prisoner of Azkaban but was very happy because he found out that Sirius did not kill Peter Pettigrew and was a really nice guy.

"I shudder to think what the state of my in-tray would be if I was away from work for five days."
"Yeah, someone might slip dragon dung in it again, eh, Perce?"
"That was a sample of fertilizer from Norway! It was nothing personal!"
(whispering to Harry) "It was. We sent it."

Bubblehead charm
Description: Produces a large bubble of air around the head of the user; it is commonly used as the supernatural equivalent of a breathing set. Seen/Mentioned: Used by Cedric Diggory and Fleur Delacour in 1995; it was used the next year by many students walking through the halls, because of horrid odours made by various pranks played on Dolores Umbridge.

“Because that’s what Hermione does,” said Ron, shrugging. “When in doubt, go to the library.”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

“HELLO? HELLO? CAN YOU HEAR ME? I-WANT-TO-TALK-TO-HARRY-POTTER!”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Ron speaking on the telephone)

Anjuman Amina Diffindo (Severing charm)
Def: used to cut or rip an object
In Goblet of Fire when Ron wants to get rid of the lace on his dress robes. In Goblet of Fire when Harry urgently wants to talk to Cedric he casts this spell to rip his bag, delaying him for class.[GF Ch.9] In Half-Blood Prince when Harry swaps the cover of the Half-Blood Prince's copy of Advanced Potion-Making with the cover of a new copy, allowing him to keep the Prince's notes under the guise of a new book.

Anjuman Amina “Don't talk to me."
"Why not?"
"Because I want to fix that in my memory for ever. Draco Malfoy, the amazing bouncing ferret...”

“How do you feel, Georgie?" whispered Mrs. Weasley.
George's fingers groped for the side of his head.
"Saintlike," he murmured.
"What's wrong with him?" croaked Fred, looking terrified. "Is his mind affected?"
"Saintlike," repeated George, opening his eyes and looking up at his brother. "You see...I'm HOLEY, Fred, geddit?”

“Why were you lurking under our window?"
"Yes - yes, good point, Petunia! What were you doing under our windows, boy?"
"Listening to the news," said Harry in a resigned voice.
His aunt and uncle exchanged looks of outrage.
"Listening to the news! Again?"
"Well, it changes every day, you see," said Harry.”

“An Unbreakable Vow?" said Ron, looking stunned. "Nah, he can’t have.... Are you sure?"
"Yes I’m sure," said Harry. "Why, what does it mean?"
"Well, you can’t break an Unbreakable Vow..."
"I’d worked that much out for myself, funnily enough.”

“He accused me of being Dumbledore's man through and through."
"How very rude of him."
"I told him I was."
Dumbledore opened his mouth to speak and then closed it again. Fawkes the phoenix let out a low, soft, musical cry. To Harry's intense embarrassment, he suddenly realized that Dumbledore's bright blue eyes looked rather watery, and stared hastily at his own knee. When Dumbledore spoke, however, his voice was quite steady.
"I am very touched, Harry.”

“It's going to be all right, sir," Harry said over and over again, more worried by Dumbledore's silence than he had been by his weakened voice. "We're nearly there ... I can Apparate us both back ... don't worry ..."
"I am not worried, Harry," said Dumbledore, his voice a little stronger despite the freezing water. "I am with you.”

“Mistletoe," said Luna dreamily, pointing at a large clump of white berries placed almost over Harry's head. He jumped out from under it.
"Good thinking," said Luna seriously. "It's often infested with nargles.”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Periculum
Description: Creates red sparks/flares to shoot from the users wand Seen/Mentioned: Used during the third task of the Tri-wizard Tournament by Harry. Etymology: Periculum is Latin for "danger".

Maggie Anti-Cheating Charm
Def: A charm to prevent cheating on a test. May be cast on quills or parchment.
Mentioned: In Sorcerer's Stone at exam time and in Order of the Phoenix before the OWLs. This charm is apparently cast on test parchments and quills- assuming they are provided- before the test.

"He was my mum and dad's best friend. He's a convicted murderer, but he's broken out of wizard prison and he's on the run. He likes to keep in touch with me, though...keep up with news...check if I'm happy..."
Harry to Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia (about Sirius), Goblet of Fire

"Yeah, Quirrell was a great teacher. There was just that minor drawback of him having Lord Voldemort sticking out of the back of his head!"
Harry to Umbridge, Order of the Phoenix

"She's Ron's sister.
But she's ditched Dean!
She's still Ron's sister.
I'm his best mate!
That'll make it worse.
If I talked to him first-
He'd hit you.
What if I don't care?
He's your best mate!"
Harry (mentally), debating whether to start dating Ginny, Half-Blood Prince

Anjuman Amina “Well?" Ron said finally, looking up at Harry. "How was it?"
Harry considered it for a moment. "Wet," he said truthfully.
Ron made a noise that might have indicated jubilation or disgust, it was hard to tell.
"Because she was crying," Harry continued heavily.
"Oh," said Ron, his smile faded slightly. "Are you that bad at kissing?"
"Dunno," said Harry, who hadn't considered this, and immediately felt rather worried. "Maybe I am.”

“A breeze ruffled the neat hedges of Privet Drive, which lay silent and tidy under the inky sky, the very last place you would expect astonishing things to happen. Harry Potter rolled over inside his blankets without waking up. One small hand closed on the letter beside him and he slept on, not knowing he was special, not knowing he was famous, not knowing he would be woken in a few hours' time by Mrs. Dursley's scream as she opened the front door to put out the milk bottles, nor that he would spend the next few weeks being prodded and pinched by his cousin Dudley...He couldn't know that at this very moment, people meeting in secret all over the country were holding up their glasses and saying in hushed voices: "To Harry Potter - the boy who lived!”

“Ginny, listen...I can't be involved with you anymore. We've got to stop seeing each other. We can't be together."
"It's for some stupid noble reason isn't it?"
"It's been like...like something out of someone else's life these last few weeks with you. But I can't...we can't...I've got to do things alone now. Voldemort uses people his enemies are close to. He's already used you as bait once, and that was just because you were my best friend's sister. Think how much danger you'll be in if we keep this up. He'll know, he'll find out. He'll try and get me through you."
"What if I don't care?"
"I care. How do you think I'd feel if this was your funeral...and it was my fault...”

“So why in the name of Merlin’s saggy left —”
“Don’t talk to your mother like that.”

“I wish...I wish I were dead...”
“And what use would that be to anyone?”

message 134: by [deleted user] (new)

“Don't play," said Hermione at once.
"Say you're ill," said Ron.
"Pretend to break your leg," Hermione suggested.
"Really break your leg," said Ron.”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

“By Gryffindor, the bravest were
Prized far beyond the rest;
For Ravenclaw, the cleverest
Would always be the best;
For Hufflepuff, hard workers were
Most worthy of admission;
And power-hungry Slytherin
Loved those of great ambition.”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

“Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Tooth-growing spell : A spell that re-grows lost teeth.
Seen/Mentioned: Ted Tonks used it to re-grow Harry Potter's tooth that he had lost during the Battle of the Seven Potters.

Anjuman Amina "It's lucky it's dark...I haven't blushed so much since Madame Pomfrey told me she liked my new earmuffs."
-Dumbledore

"Yer' great puddin' of a son don' need fattenin' anymore, Dursley don' worry."
-Hagrid

"So light a fire!" Harry choked.
"Yes...of course...but there's no wood!" Hermione cried wringing her hands.
"HAVE YOU GONE MAD!" Ron bellowed, "ARE YOU A WITCH OR NOT!"

"We had to write about our hero at school Mr. Mason; I wrote about you."
-Dudley

"You're alive," she said blankly to Harry.
"There's no need to sound so disappointed," he said grimly, wiping flecks of blood and slime off his glasses.
"Oh, well...I'd just been thinking...if you had died, you'd have been welcome to share my toilet," said Myrtle, blushing silver.

Ron was staring at Pettigrew with the utmost revulsion.
"I let you sleep in my bed!" he said.

"You don't know how bizarre it is to see Goyle thinking." - Ron

Welcome!" he said. "Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts! Before we begin our banquet, I would like to say a few words, and here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak!" "Thank you!"

Maggie Tarantallegra
Def: A jinx that makes the target's legs dance uncontrollably.
Mentioned: During the first meeting of the short-lived Duelling Club (Chamber of Secrets), Harry and Malfoy are paired up and asked to duel. Harry first casts Rictusempra on Malfoy, who then falls over laughing. Malfoy then casts Tarantallegra on Harry, making his
legs essentially dance the tarantella (see below). It's also mentioned in a couple other books.
Root: Comes from the Italian word "tarantella".
Tarantella: A very fast Italian dance that is said to nullify the bite of the tarantula. Whoever is dancing it probably looks like Tarantallegra was cast on them.

Rictusempra
Def: A jinx that makes the target feel like someone is tickling them.
Mentioned: In the short-lived Dueling Club, Harry and Malfoy are asked to duel. Harry casts Tarantallegra on Malfoy and Malfoy casts Rictusempra on Harry. Also used several more times in the series.
Root: Comes from the English word "rictus" and the Latin word "sempra". Essentially means "laugh forever".

Expecto Patronum
Def: A spell to summon a Patronus which can be used to carry messages, to ward off dementors, or to signal a member of the Order of the Phoenix.
Mentioned: In almost every book from Prisoner of Azkaban on.
Technique: Think of something happy.
Fun fact: Harry's Patronus is a stag, his father's Animagus form. Hermione's is an otter, and Ron's is a terrier.
Root:
Expecto: In Latin, 'I watch'. (Expecto = specto)
Patronum: In English, 'patron' (guardian).
Expecto Patronum: 'I watch for a guardian'.

Expelliarmus
Def: A spell to disarm the target. Causes the wand to fly out of their hand.
Mentioned: First mentioned in Chamber of Secrets. Demonstrated on Lockhart by Snape in the Dueling Club. Memorably, Harry also uses it on Voldemort to escape with Cedric's body in Goblet of Fire.
Root: Expelliarmus
Expel + arms
"Get rid of weapons"

"MERLIN'S PANTS!" shrieked Hermione.
(the only time that Hermione ever says this in the entire series) Deathly Hallows

Anjuman Amina Aguamenti
def - used to shoot water from the end of the wand
used in HBP - harry uses it to get water for dumbledore...

Anjuman Amina oops I added that by accident. Here's a quote:
As it swung closed behind them, Harry heard Phineas Nigellus’s voice.
“You know, Minister, I disagree with Dumbledore on many counts . . . but you cannot deny he’s got style. . . .”

Definition: Used to wipe the memory of the opponent and thus end the duel.
Technique: Point your wand directly at the person you wish to brainwash

Used multiple times (in travels) and backfired upon once (using Ron Weasley's malfunctioning wand) by Gilderoy Lockhart in "Chamber of Secrets" Book 2
