SOLVED. Girl has a mother who became mentally challenged after falling off a tree and lives in a small town [s]

I read this back in 5th grade, not sure if with the class or if I just picked it up in my teacher's room. It takes place in the south, around the 1950's or 1960's I think. The girl had a mom who one day climbs a tree (I keep seeing a apple tree or something to do with apples) and she fell and became mentally challenged and childlike in mind. I remember the girl's aunt came to visit them and she took the girl to the city and there she witnessed racial discrimination while having a smoothie. Then I remember there was a boy who I think liked the girl (not sure) and I remember they played on a steeped hill. It was a holiday or a local holiday when they played on the hill and there was people around having picnics. And I remember there being a grandmother that doesn't think too kindly of the aunt or something. I don't remember the father being in the picture, though there was a mention probably.
