book that i thought was written by james patterson /s

I cannot for life of me remember the name of a book I read about 7-10 years ago.
It's about a man who goes to a town where people seem to disappear after developing a black mark over their heart and are found dead thought to have been killed by big animal. Later in the book it's revealed that the "animal" is actually a dragon-creature.
I believed it to be written by James Patterson, but not entirely sure. I do remember the cover being black with only a type of animal/predator eyes showing and the author's name in red.

The book is The Oath by Frank Peritti. I am sure I am not spelling the author's last name properly but it is close.
