Keith | 77 comments Hey group! My name is Keith. I've recently discovered a love of science fiction/dystopian/post apocalyptic literature. Read 1984 as a teenager. Very much enjoyed the Hunger Games series. The Maze Runner and Wool series' are next on my list. I'd love to hear some of the group's personal favorites.

Keith - 1984 is probably my favorite book, and also enjoyed the Hunger Games series. Have you ever read Fahrenheit 451? I know it's old, but it's classic and a personal favorite.

Hey Rob,
I haven't read Fahrenheit 451 but it seems that I always see it mentioned. I will have to give it a try!

Welcome Keith. You can take a look here, otherwise I will be repeating myself for the 100th time, otherwise I don't mind recommending the same book over and over again.
The Maze runner was a fast and entertaining read but not something that I would keep reading. Wool is amazing, so you have two good choices there.

message 409: by Talitha (new)

Talitha (talithamaiysha) | 80 comments 1984 is my favourite too, Wool is still on my to-read list. Welcome, I think you'll find enough recommendations in this group :).

Maggie (maggietoussaint) | 7 comments I'm glad to have found this group. I'm a mystery and suspense writer that's writing a dystopian society series. I write mystery and suspense as Maggie Toussaint and science fiction as Rigel Carson. I'm looking forward to connecting with friends here. Welcome Quentin, can you recommend a horror sci-fi or is there no such thing? I'm wondering as I've read some books classified as scifi horror and they weren't very scary.

message 414: by Quentin (new)

Quentin Wallace (quentinwallace) Hi Ellie, I'll have to go back through my book list to see if I can find any good horror sci-fi. I know what you mean, it seems to usually be one or the other, and it can be hard to find something that fits both.

Thank you Quentin, it is not an urgent request. Even if you don't look for such a book now I would appreciate if you let me know if you stumble upon one in future.
Yes it does seem that combining those two genres is difficult Maybe a collaboration between authors would acheive that more easily.

Kaylynn (kaycav) | 1 comments My names Kaylynn, but i peorfer; to go by Kay. My favorite books are Maze Runner, Uglies, Ready Player One, and A Certian Slant of Light. Dystopian is one of my favorite series.

message 419: by Joey (new)

Joey (mostlyjoe) Hola Dystopian readers. I'm mildly old school in my taste such as Brave New World meets Alas, Babylon. But these days I'm looking for interesting sci-fi/fantasy settings broken up by ancient disasters. Also Gamma World, Fallout, Dark Sun fan.

I'm Joe

Hello Joseph and welcome. I think most of us here are fans of the classics

Joseph wrote: "Also Gamma World, Fallout, Dark Sun fan." I have to admit that those don't ring a bell and the search gives too many results for each.

message 424: by Evan (new)

Evan (fromthewastes) My name is Evan and I hail from NW Montana. I live, eat, and breath postapoc and dystopian stories. Since reading Hothouse by Brian Aldiss back in the early 80's, I have been a passionate reader of this type of fiction.

I am currently reading Second Chance by Dylan Hearn.

Welcome Evan. I think I'll take a look at your shelves. I haven't read many PA books. What would you recommend me?

message 426: by Andy (new)

Andy Futuro Hi everyone, I'm Andy, I'm from Philadelphia. I like to hike and camp and subject myself to other needless hardships. I'm specifically interested in what it is about dystopias that has captured our societal imagination now.

message 427: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Brownlee (sarah_spitfire) | 1 comments Hey everybody! I'm Sarah from London. I'm a reader/writer who has a particular passion for dystopian and also military-themed books. My first novel 'How the Wolf Lost Her Heart' is a YA Paranormal Romance set in a dystopian London where law and order has broken down, and thugs rule the city. So, erm, yes it can be pretty grim!

Merry Christmas in advance everyone! :D

message 428: by Andy (new)

Andy Futuro @Joe do you mean Fallout, the game?

Evan (fromthewastes) Ellie [The Empress] wrote: "Welcome Evan. I think I'll take a look at your shelves. I haven't read many PA books. What would you recommend me?"

Oh gosh, it would depend on what kind of apocalypse you're interested in. Ecological, biological, aliens, zombies, or just good old plain nuking. ;)

message 430: by Beau (new)

Beau Johnston (beau_johnston) Hello Andy and Sarah.

message 431: by Dylan (new)

Dylan Hearn (dylan_hearn) | 5 comments Hi,
I'm Dylan, I'm a writer and I love (and write) dystopian fiction. My favourite dystopian novels are those set in the near future (or even in the past as with 1984) that are really reflections of aspects of our society today.
I'm really looking forward to getting to know some of you better and to understand what you all enjoy from dystopian fiction.

Hm, so something that is a standalone and fairly short. If possible not a YA, but if it is a good book a YA would do. Gory and dark. It can be apocalyptic as well, not just post-a. No zombies. and it should be a page-turner, OR COURSE!

Hahaha am I fussy or what?

message 434: by [deleted user] (new)

Happy Christmas Everyone! I'm relatively new to the group. I enjoy reading in general, but the dystopian genre is my favorite. I can't wait to join the group and buddy reads!

message 435: by Luke (new)

Luke Marsden (lukefdmarsden) Hi all,

I'm Luke, a native of the South West of the UK. I enjoy the dystopian equivalent of magical realism (dystopian realism? I've seen the term used a few times but it never seems to have caught on) - literature that opens the reader's eyes to the dystopian elements of the everyday world.

I'm also an author. Nice to be here!

OK, it's going to be hard to find one that fits all of those requirements. ;)

I'm going to have to break at least one. I'm rather fond of The Mountain and The City, Part I by Brian Martinez . I was rather surprised at a certain element and ended up having to buy all of them. Not to say that you need to as I think the first book can stand alone - at least from my point of view. That and the fact that it is free as I hesitate to recommend paid books in case people don't like them. There have been too many times I've liked something, recommended it and getting bit in the keister when they didn't like it. ;)

I'm also very fond of Enclave (Razorland, #1) by Ann Aguirre , it's YA, but as an adult, I quite enjoyed it. It is, of course, a paid book, but I read it when it was first released and very cheap.

Evan, thank you for the recommendation. I don't really expect a good book to be free.

Welcome to every one else and Chelsea are you going to join us for the Jan group read. I hope I have chosen a better one this time.

Welcome to you as well. There is really a lot that can be recommended. Why don't you join us for the January reading? Alternatively you could take a look in this topic or I can suggest this two short reads: The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas and 2BR02B. If you are looking for a book though the The Handmaid's Tale is a very good classic and you can't go wrong with reading it.

message 443: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello (: I'm a university student who is looking to rekindle the passion I had for reading. Currently reading the Divergent series by Veronica Roth, however usually my tastes run to more adult fiction. I have a long list of books to read for now, but have always enjoyed adding more to the list.

message 444: by Florence (new)

Florence Witkop | 1 comments Fell in love with The Day of The Triffids when it came out. Unfortunately, it was so good that few books can equal it. But some are good. The Hunger Games is good, read the three books in three nights only because I paced myself.
Question... is depression a critical component of dystopia? I didn't see it in The Day of The Triffids and I'm wondering. Seems as if so many now are and I write dystopia but I don't write depression so I'm wondering if what I write is really dystopia.

message 448: by Nick (new)

Nick Nyquist | 1 comments Hello. My name is Nick. I'm a high school senior and I read a book about every week. I find reading to be an activity that I can get myself lost in. I see it as a way to learn and experience. The not many read around me I feel bad it to find me more than I can think. I'm in AP literature and we learn about the different stories and different themes throughout society and its just so fascinating. I think it's my favorite class. I joined book reads because I thought that I needed to express my ideas about books more. I don't really have that many people that I can talk to you now and my best friend who reads books often is back in New York when I'm here in Seattle Washington. I think that through book reads I can try to formulate my ideas in a way that I couldn't before. I also enjoy writing and I hope to become a stage manager after going to college. Theater is everything to me. But if I had to choose my alternative I would hope to be good enough to write for a living or be lucky enough to read for a living.
