Rob Dircks (robdircks) | 10 comments Hi everybody! I'm Rob, an author and lover of science fiction (1984 is my favorite book of all time) and genres that combo with comedy (Good Omens by Terry Pratchett is a perfect example). I broke my elbow the summer of eighth grade, forcing me into downtime. I reluctantly picked up Ira Levin's This Perfect Day, and a Nebula award anthology, and it wound up being the best summer of my childhood.

message 356: by Kardelen (new)

Kardelen Ergin (kardelencergin) Hello everyone, I just stumbled upon here after taking this quiz: http://www.npr.org/blogs/ed/2014/08/0...
it says that I was a person "interested in social connection and mental stimulation." I think it's kinda true. So I love reading utopian and dystopian novels. Right now I'm reading Insurgent by Veronica Roth (it's the second book of the Divergent Triology.) My all time favorite is absolutely The Brave New World, and in fact I do no see it as a dystopian novel but a utopian novel. I still have a long list to go, I even haven't read Clockwork Orange or the Hainish Cycle yet (The line between science fiction and dystopian can blur or disappear easily especially for me.)
I came here to read books deliberately. I wanted to read deep and suck it out from the dystopian novels. (Kudos for the ones who got the reference, and for the ones who didn't, it is almost a line from Dead Poets Society "I went to the woods because I wanted to live deliberately. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life.")
So I hope I can mine this page to supply myself with dystopian novels.
Good reads everyone!Insurgent

Welcome Rob. I loved This Perfect Day. It is really dystopic and I don't understand why is it not more popular.

Kardelen wrote: "So I hope I can mine this page to supply myself with dystopian novels. "

Welcome Kardelen. I as you still have a long list of dystopias to read. Which I guess is good, as I don't want to run out of good books to read. I would suggest you check out this topic (add any suggestions you want) or the book discussion folder.

Tim Moon (tim_moon) | 3 comments Hi, I'm Tim Moon. I enjoy adventure and travel. SciFi/Fantasy and horror are some of my favorite genres. I just published my first book, about a zombie apocalypse.

I love Korean and Thai food. And Haribo Gold Gummi Bears.

Welcome Tim.

I love gummy bears! I miss them!

message 361: by Arie (new)

Arie Farnam (ArieFarnam) | 24 comments Hi, I'm Arie Farnam. I read and write dystopia. I actually originally thought I was writing fantasy but it turned out to be contemporary dystopia with a fantasy twist. In any event, I read both a lot but probably more dystopia than fantasy these days. I need the realism and grit of dystopia because otherwise my cynical side gets bored.

I like Middle Eastern and East African food and I do actually have a secret (mostly completely suppressed) liking for gummy bears, which my logical mind considers to be unhealthy junk food but the little kid in me doesn't care.

message 362: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Stivers (jordan_stivers) | 1 comments Hi everyone! I'm Jordan and I live in Sacramento. Dystopia is one of my favorite genres by far because it has such diversity. :) I really enjoyed the Ender series (Orson Scott Card), the Wool/Silo series (Hugh Howey), The Handmaid's Tale (Margaret Atwood), and anything by Lois Lowry or George Orwell. I'm very excited to meet you all and find awesome reads together!

message 363: by Beau (new)

Beau Johnston (beau_johnston) Hello Tim, Arie and Jordan.

Tim, did you bring enough Gummi Bears for the rest of the class?

message 364: by Ashley (new)

Ashley | 7 comments Hey everyone! I'm Ashley and I have just recently discovered this genre. So far I have only read 1984 (which I think is now my favourite book of all time) and Farenheight 451. Both were extremely fascinating to me and I would love some similar recommendations if anyone has any! :)

message 365: by Talitha (new)

Talitha (talithamaiysha) | 80 comments Welcome Ashley!
1984 is my favourite too! I'm currently reading Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. I'm only at chapter 4, but it's very fascinating already.

It's so amazing I love 1984! I don't even know where to start with my review there's just so much to say!
Brave New World is on my to read list already so glad to hear it's good :)

Talitha (talithamaiysha) | 80 comments I know what you mean! I'm absolutely in love with every word of it!

Fair warning: the first 2/3 chapters of BNW are REALLY dry. It's a necessary evil for the rest of the story. Just don't give up if you don't like the beginning :).

I get what you mean but I always finish a book! It has to be really bad for me not to finish it because I just hate having something unfinished. It's a problem :/

message 373: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 6 comments I've been a fan of science fiction for some time, and yet sometimes I just don't have the stomach for it. I enjoyed Lois Lowry's, The Giver series. I found Hunger Games to be very good at exploring evil regimes, and yet deeply disturbing. It was far too realistic in that way to be a "fun" read. I've read Ray Bradbury, Aldous Huxley, and others, and really want to read more of Philip K. Dick because I respect his writing. But my favorite remains Madeleine Engle, "A Wrinkle in Time".

You'll have to get a fancy book cover for it. That's why I did - Alice and Wonderland. That has to be one of the first dystopian science fiction books. It's like reading someone's dream.

Nevanthri | 3 comments Hi,

My name is Nevanthri. I am South African and currently lively in France with my husband, he is french. I love reading. I enjoying buying a new book, browsing the bookshelf until I find a book or two that I like. I generally buy two or three book, one of which is a cheesy chick-lit. You could say I am a book collector, my dream is to have a library in my house with all the books I have read over time. I like all sorts of books but I have only read one non fiction so that is a genre I would to explore as well as autobiographies.

D.M. Baillie (dmbaillie) | 6 comments Hi all, just new to the group. Love all things dystopian, seeing what the world could possibly turn out to be. It's amazing that mankind has the power to create so much but also has the power to destroy so much.

Loved reading The Road and watching the movie.

Also love all things sci-fi and fantasy, tv and in print.

Currently reading Dead to the World, not truly dystopian but it depends on the your point of view.

message 393: by Beau (new)

Beau Johnston (beau_johnston) Hi D.M. Like you, I loved watching The Road. Unfortunately, I haven't read the book yet (it is in my ever growing to-read list).
