Jackie - Fire & Ice Book Reviews (jackiefireicebookreviews) Welcome Liana! I am glad you found some good books here!

Beau Johnston (beau_johnston) Hi Liana, welcome to the group. My first taste of dystopia came in the form of the movie Blade Runner.

Ellie [The Empress] wrote: "....At the moment I can except living in any dystopian society as long as I don't have to get up at 5 am!"

Isn't that the rule? All residents of Dystopia must present at 0500hrs for their daily belittling?

Hello Liana and welcome.

Beau wrote: "Isn't that the rule? All residents of Dystopia must present at 0500hrs for their daily belittling? "

As long as their 5am happens 5 hours later then the actual one. Maybe midnight can be moved to the morning.

Hey Beau. Thanks for the welcome. I LOVE Blade Runner but only saw the movie (many times).

Talitha (talithamaiysha) | 80 comments Hi, my name is Talitha and I love reading (duh;-)). I'm kind of a newbe to dystopian novels so I joined this group to get recommendations on what to read next when I wanna read a dystopia.

So far I've read: 1984 (my fav book!), Lord of the Flies and the hunger games.

Currently, I can only listen to audiobooks due to my illness. Fortunately, there are a lot of books nicely narrated nowadays so that won't be a problem.

I'm gonna look around for some nice reads, but of course you can recommend me your fav book as well! :-)

message 310: by Beau (new)

Beau Johnston (beau_johnston) That's what I love about Goodreads. It doesn't matter it's bedtime in Australia, the rest of the world is wide awake.

Jamie (raccoonlove) | 1 comments Hello all!
I'm Jamie, and I am a huge fan of the dystopian genre, particularly YA. I know, I know, I am 26, but I love it, and have been reading about two or three books a week for a while now. Always had a passion for reading, and this is my latest obsession. Hope you all are doing well! :)

message 315: by Beau (new)

Beau Johnston (beau_johnston) Hi Jamie. You're never too old to enjoy a well written story, regardless of the genre.

Well, if you haven't tried the oldie but goodie, The Giver, give it a try before it comes out as a movie in August! In my opinion this novel is the forerunner of most modern dystopian literature. it is not a very long book, but will spur arguments as to the 'true" ending to the book! The author is Lois Lowry (sp.) Good luck in your hunt for those elusive great reads!!!

Talitha (talithamaiysha) | 80 comments Tnx for the tip!! I'll definitely read it before the movie comes out:-)

Talitha (talithamaiysha) | 80 comments Hi Jamie,
I agree with Beau. I'm 24 and I also like YA fiction. And there are people way older who like it as well!

message 322: by Suncani (new)

Suncani Hi I'm Emma. I read a mixture of everything although I tend to come back to dystopian fiction eventually. Think my first introduction was The handmaiden's tale although I struggled with Oryx and Crake. Looking forward to finding even more things to read and the giver sounds like a good start :)

Hi everyone,

I'm Christopher, I have recently published my debut short novel Ralph and the Purple Fly an eloquent sci-fi and horror satire, now available from Amazon http://ow.ly/yAzax.

I have also just begun a blog where I review other author's work at www.christopherbruntauthor.com so feel free to check that out too. And, inevitably, I'm on Twitter with @CJBWriter.

Otherwise I look forward to chatting with you all at some point.

Hi, I'm Danielle. Love dystopian fiction; 1984 is my all time favourite book. Blade runner is also one of my favourite films but strangely I haven't got round to reading Philip K. Dick Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?- must get round to reading it. I think I like dystopian fiction because the best writers within the genre echo down warnings to the present - painting us pictures of worlds/futures that are best avoided: pretty powerful stuff if you ask me... Anyway, love well thought out dystopian fiction - any recommendations welcome :).

Hahaha i agree! when i tell people I'm reading YA I think its funny- but those books put more effort into plot and character development than adult books which sometimes are heavy into romance- though i do like those too-

message 336: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome to the group, Danielle. Try Phillip K. Dick's Valis trilogy. They're all good reads.

message 337: by Jessie Jr (new)

Jessie Jr | 1 comments Hi, I'm Jj, I got hooked to dystopia by hunger games well Ive read other stories before that but in hunger games I saw what (message 338) said about warning us for the future, I liked dystopian stories because Its a fiction that can be related to any part of humanities timeline and at some point they are real ( in a metphorical way)...so hope to know more about dystopian books and other good reads through this page.

message 338: by Charlie (new)

Charlie (areadingmachine) | 8 comments Hello! New to the group. Love me a bit of dystopian fiction. Red Rising is one of my favourites this year.

Please add me a friend if you like actually using Goodreads. I love reading other people reviews and getting recommendations.

Thanks for the recommendation for VALIS, Royce - the blurb has definitely intrigued me. As for Jj's comment (message 344), "I liked dystopian stories because Its a fiction that can be related to any part of humanities timeline and at some point they are real (in a metphorical way)" I agree with what your saying unfortunately the 'literary guardians' frequently tend to under estimate the function of dystopian fiction. Shame!

Talitha (talithamaiysha) | 80 comments Charlie, I just checked 'Red Rising' out, seems epic! Definitely on my to-read list :)

message 348: by Charlie (new)

Charlie (areadingmachine) | 8 comments Nice hope you like it. The start is a little slow, but the scope opens up about a quarter of the way through and it hits top gear for the rest of the book.

message 349: by Dena (new)

Dena Nicotra (denanicotra) | 3 comments Hi Everybody! My name is Dena and I am an author and an avid reader. My current favorite dystopian books are The Hunger Games. I love to read anything that lets me disappear in the pages and find another world to explore.

message 350: by Charlie (new)

Charlie (areadingmachine) | 8 comments Welcome Dena. If you liked Hunger Games you should read Battle Royale. It's a Japanese writer so is quite dark but very similar to Hunger Games, though you get to see a lot more of the other characters not just the two main.
