Hi guys The Running man's blurb reminds me of the movie "Gamer" that was recently released (last year)

Jo wrote: "I have been wanting to read The Running Man.. I am going to pick it up this weekend!!"

I don't think I would be able to read with you. I'm still reading the Trial and then I'm gonna move to Dick's book Do Androids Dream of Electric Ship, but you can open a discussion topic (or should I) in the discussion folder.

Aya & Beau, I love movies, but I love books as well. Unfortunately reading requires some mental work, and to someone with sleeping and concentration problems, reading is very slow. But I'm not going to give up. I wish I could read a 100 books a year! No chance there.
For me reading with a group is a big motivation though.

Ditto! At the rate which my TBR list is growing I am not going to be able to read everything in one lifetime.

message 203: by Beau (new)

Beau Johnston (beau_johnston) Ellie, I'm with you on the book count. Between working, writing, general maintenance around the house and day-to-day goings on, I have to sneak in my reading time where I can during the day, and just before bed.

Harvey (jamtheory) | 17 comments Hi everyone. Just joined the group and thought I'd say hi. I'm from Glasgow in Scotland. I'm 25 and a student. My favourite dystopian is We by Yevgeny Zamyatin. Next on my dystopian to read list is The Year of The Flood by Margaret Atwood but I think I might pick up Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep for a reread too. When I read it years ago I hadn't seen Blade Runner so maybe it'll be different this time.

Welcome. I will be reading the Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep soon and WE is on my TBW list. Oddly I don't remember seeing the Blade Runner movie, so I will have the chance to watch it for the "first" time after the book. (If I have seen it I just don't remember anything)

Hi Jt, (can I call you Jt?)

I have We on my TBR, I'm hoping to get to it eventually. Favourite dystopian of all time? That's a pretty big call. I'll have to bump it up on my TBR if it's that good :). I'm also a Margaret Atwood fan, I'll join you for that one if you're wanting a buddy.

Re Blade Runner, great movie, but like a lot of the guys here were saying nothing compares to the book.

Clare O'Beara | 28 comments Hi,

I'm living in Dublin and writing what has been described as the dystopian not-too-far-into-the future of the UK and Ireland. Actually it's alternate world SF.
I read a lot of SF and fantasy.

I noticed a few post by Aussies. You may have read 'Down Under' which is a post-nuclear problem Australian future, complete with were-kangas. I thought it was the best look at Australia I'd read since Norstrilia.
I suppose the younger people here have never heard of Cordwainer Smith.

Guys you can open a discussion topic for any dystopia book you read whether you have a read buddy or not. I don't see many people doing it, I think it might not be clear, I am wondering if I should open a new folder or post an "important(sticky)" topic explaining that this is an option.
What do you think?

Hi Clare, thank you for joining us. I can't say I have read any of the titles you are mentioning.

message 210: by Clare (new)

Clare O'Beara | 28 comments Hi Ellie,
Thanks for the greeting.
Down Under
Down Under by Tam Ames

Norstrilia
Norstrilia by Cordwainer Smith

Cordwainer Smith was an SF master. This pseudonym was adopted because he travelled with his diplomatic family in the Far East. Mostly he wrote amazingly original shorts, but his Norstrilia tales were based on the prospect of a future North Australia being a world power by itself.

Aya (ayako_sato) | 40 comments @ Ellie - Probably a good idea actually. I know a lot of groups prefer to have to leave that sort of stuff to the mods in order to avoid duplicate threads or having too many created. I just assumed that was the case here. I suppose it just really depends on how much action there is and if it gets out of hand then the rules can be adjusted.

@ Clare - Nice to meet you! I also haven't read either of those books. Thanks for the recommendation. I really wish I had the ability to read faster so I could knock off all these great books from my TBR.

Well we are not the most active group, so I don't expect things getting out of hand. I also think that most members are pretty sensible, and would search for the topic before posting. I think I will include this information the next time I am sending a mass message (which I am trying not to do too often.)

Harvey (jamtheory) | 17 comments Hey everyone. You all seem lovely. A buddy for the Atwood would be really cool Aya. It's been sitting on my shelf for ages but I keep getting distracted by other books or that life thing gets in the way of reading. Am I right in thinking that the group read the first one in that Atwood trilogy a few months ago? Thought I saw it further down in discussion posts. Jt (which it's fine to call me by the way) :)

Hello Clare.

Werekangas (and drop-bears) are real. That's why people don't camp near Woomera. But I didn't know about those books, I thought all knowledge of their existence had been covered up.

I've read the first one already but not with the group. If no one has already I'll go ahead and create a thread for The Year of the Flood. Let me know when you're ready to start reading it. See you in the discussions Jt. :)

I remember reading about that in the paper. I still have the clipping in my scrap book.

"The drop-bear latched onto its first victim as it landed heavily in the middle of our campsite. In the confusion of terrified screams and people fleeing in different directions, I ran for the safety of the nearby bush, trying to put as much distance between myself and the savage beast as possible. Silently praying it chooses someone else as its next meal", said the distraught victim, as paramedics assisted her into a nearby ambulance.

It's survive the outback 101. Every scout needs to get their drop bear badge.

I am a avid reader of any book (ok, most genres except romance, not a big fan of lol) but I always fall back to my love of dystopic and Sci Fi fiction. I am continually on the lookout for new authors to read. I look forward to finding like minded friends to read and discuss with.
