Welcome Miranda ! I know right ? Seems like every other novel these days is some "YA Dystopian Nightmare" All rip-offs of "The Hunger Games" which is actually a rip-off (As all of them are) of a novel I really enjoyed titled Battle Royale by Japanese author Koushun Takami . Seems every time I turn around , I am reading the synopsis of another YA novel especially ebooks on my Kindle and Nook where these so-called "AUTHORS" sell these opportunistic shams 100 pages at a time for $2.99 or more calling them books in a series , when what they are actually doing is selling an entire book one chapter at a time .

Hi Miranda! I feel like you and I have similar tastes in genres. Literary classics and dystopias are my favorite genres to settle into. If you're looking for a modern dystopia that isn't a YA (like you, I'm also not a fan of those) you can try When She Woke, by Hillary Jordan. I just finished it and loved it. I'm not sure if you're into thess types, but it also relies heavily on religion and feminism. But if that's something you're into, or don't mind, this is definitely a good read.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to discussing novels with all of you and finding new things to read. Happy reading!

I'm starting 1984 tonight, and as for Brave New World, I can tell you it is fanstastic from start to finish, and the last paragraph hit me hard. I'd be more than happy to discuss either of them with you. Until then, happy reading!

Welcome Zarina !
Zarina: thanks for the recommendation, I'll definitely look it up!

I have just finished my third Science Fiction novel and first Dystopian Novel called Fear. Since it is my first Dystopian Novel, I could really use some beta readers to look at the book and offer some suggestions. For example, is the book too depressing?
I have read a lot of S.F. Heinline, Bradbury, Asimov, Dick, etc. and some dystopian novels as well.

my favorite book series are
the maze runner
the selection
and the hunger games.
I love reading a new book so if you have any suggestions please tell me and I will try to read it.

The Hunger Games series
the Divergent series
the Delirium series
Well that's all I can think of for now, ..." I can relate dystopian novels are the best. Have you read the selection series cause that series is amazing!

I'm Simon, an author from England who lives in Barcelona and I've been a fan of good, thought-provoking Dystopia since I read 1984 as a child.
I've tried my hand at writing some Dystopian novels and have a couple published and several more in the pipeline, but I had to scrap the major work that I was planning... It was set in a nightmarish future where Trump had been elected President of America.

Hi Mykayla ! Damn this sure does sound like an AA meeting ! Lol I think just about all dystopian literature has at least a little romance . 1984 and Brave New World .

You're welcome .

Delighted to join and meet fellow dystopian fans. There's nothing like blowing up a world and rebuilding it, is there? A few years ago I wrote a musical based on an Ayn Rand novella The Anthem, and my new sci fi baseball novel A Mound Over Hell, set in 2098 after America's lost WW3 to radical Islam, comes out March 29.
Happy Thursday from Brooklyn
Gary

A Mound Over Hell sounds great ! I will definitely be watching for it in March . Glad to see it's coming out in paperback as well as an ebook as I prefer physical books to digital . Welcome to the group .

Have you read We by Yevgeny Zamyatin ? Welcome to the group .

Here is the google drive link. It's free and it's 100% my own creation. All I ask is if you use it for the year, email me a copy of it so I can have fun with the data in it!

I also have several books out on Amazon that I've written and published on Philosophy and Stoicism. One book in particular, City of Zeph, analyzes the philosophical and existential angst of modern America in a thematic style similar to Friedrich Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Interested members can check out my books, including City of Zeph, at https://www.amazon.com/Robert-Woolsto... ---- Please contact me at woolstonrobert@gmail.com if you'd like to receive a complimentary copy of any of my philosophy books to read. review and leave a star rating on Amazon.

Great to find this group. I'm a big fan of all future stories (and strangely a lot of stuff set well in the past... and, hmm, quite a bit set right now!).
As well as being an avid reader, I'm an author too - Miles Hudson in an equally wide range of genres to what I read. Physics textbooks for schools, detective mysteries, and most recently a dystopian future thingy.
Looking forward to sharing some chat about possible future worlds!

Hi, Justin and welcome to Dystopia Land. Ready Player One was an amazing debut novel. Spielberg optioned it and is bringing it to the big screen next month. The trailer for it looks terrific. Check out the reader reviews of the book. I think you'll find a lot of like-minded fans of the book.

I am Kamna. I read novels from all genres, I can say that I have tried to read at least one from each genre. But out of all I love dystopian novels the most. Here are some of them that I have read -
1) Divergent series
2) Hunger games series
3) Delirium
4) The Finisher

Hello Mykayla, thank you for your recommendations! I would definitely read them as soon as I finish Delirium series.

My name is Marvin and I definitely love dystopian novels. I have read so far The Hunger Games, 1984 and Brave New World. I am looking forward to read more of this type of novel as long as they create some suspense so it will keep me interested.

😂 I can definitely relate to you. I do this all the time. I recommend my favourite novels to everyone and anyone! It is like, I can not sleep peacefully until I convince everyone to read it!!! So you are definitely not the only obnoxious one😋

My love of reading turned into a love of writing so I write fanfiction (not real literature, I know, I know), short stories, and poems. I'm also an aspiring journalist.

So cool to be able to exchange here! I am a big fan of dystopian fiction, and a writer of semi-dystopia myself... I have just finished my first novel about a parallel universe where a civil war ravaged Europe and an app similar to Tinder is about to replace democracy. The book is called DISCO SOUR and it will be out in May, published by Unbound.
cheers to all!

Hey Rikki, good to read your introduction - welcome! I similarly have made a (fairly meagre) living from writing for many years now. Mostly physics textbooks for school students, but trying to break into fiction. I'm on the way to getting my first dystopian novel, 2089, published.
I liked your description of how you write in the mornings with instrumental music only - I have a rule that I can't open my email software before noon!

Hey, Rikki. Great to meet another Canadian author. Best of luck with your writing career and I wish you all the success in the world trying to break out of the corporate mold.

I'm Alex, and I'm currently studying English in university! I aspire to write novels in the future, and dystopia is one of my favourite facets of literature. I adore 1984, and some others like Farenheight 451 and Brave New World. Right now I'm reading Ready Player One (for a second time), and I plan to start Man in the High Castle very soon.
I'm expanding my horizons, so I hope to read some great dystopian novels with the rest of you!

Hi!
My name is Mike and I have just written a Dystopian Novel Called Fear. Just editing it now. Oh, yes, and I've read a few of them and seen some of the movies as well.

I am Sandra, 49 y/o, from NL.
I have been lurking around for a few weeks now...and thought I'd be nice to say 'hi' to you all... :)
Dystopia is my favorite genre, however, I generally read just about anything that I can get my hands on...
Apart from dystopia, I love, love, love Shirley Jackson!.

I'm Dave, a long-time fan of post-apocalyptic and dystopic fiction (I've also written some of it), and I'm always on the lookout for new stuff that's engaging and well-written. Partly out of wanting to stay current and partly out of plain old interest, I read a lot of YA, although I'm long past being your typical (by age) YA reader. I also don't turn up my nose at adult novels, and I read across a wide range of genres. I just finished Eventide (adult), which is not at all dystopic but wonderful anyway, and before that it was The Alex Crow, which is at least semi-dystopic. Right now I'm reading The Knife of Never Letting Go, which is both dystopic and YA. It's gooood.

I'm a full-time reader and writer, but I'm first and foremost a reader, and I love dystopian, apocalyptic, and post-apocalyptic literature. All those subgenres have influenced my own books.

Hi Mayra . How about We by Yevgeny Zamyatin ? OR The MaddAddam Trilogy: Oryx and Crake; The Year of the Flood; MaddAddam by Margaret Atwood ?

C. S. Lewis was a contemporary of Tolkien and is better known for his Narnia series. That Hideous Strength is part of his "Out of the Silent Planet Series"--good and interesting sci-fi, but again more like allegorical Christian stories than dystopian ones.
Because you're starting a list of classics, I'd add The Time Machine, Brave New World, Darkness at Noon, and Fahrenheit 451--the latter, at least from GR's POV, is at least as depressing. I'm sure I read more in my youth, but they now live in a galaxy long ago and far away amidst my old gray matter.
Dystopian has to at least start out depressing, methinks--the history of the subgenre exists because famous writers WERE depressed by what they saw around them and feared in their immediate future.

My name is Miranda and I'm new to Goodreads, but definitely not new to reading. I'm currently in a kind of dystopian-mood, and going through the classics (rereading Fahrenhet 451 is next on my list). Might dip into some more modern dystopias later, but I feel like most of it is YA which isn't really my cup of tea.
