Yup - I love dystopia though, write my own D series now. I'm gonna be releasing some stuff later this year, too.

Bec (_becandbooks) Just dropping in to say hi. It's about time that I joined a dystopian group. I constantly attempt to read more "adult" books - classics, crime, non-fiction - but I always end up falling back to YA dystopian. So far my favourite series in the genre is Uglies.

Angeline | 15 comments My dad set me off on the right literary track by reading me the likes of HG Wells and John Wyndham for bedtime stories, and I've loved dystopian fiction ever since.

I'm currently reading Sarah Pinborough's The Death House, and I've just released my debut novella which is, unsurprisingly, a dystopian thriller.

Pleased to meet you all!

David Lentz (wordsworthgreenwich) Greetings Dystopians,
I wrote a novel in "stream of voice" with a dystopian vision of the USA in 2020 (The Year of Clear Vision), which is becoming eerily true:

It is also a stage play seeking a producer:

A finder's commission is available.
Cordially,

Ken Norton (kennorton) | 1 comments Hello everyone! My name's Ken and I'm new to the site. I love all sorts of post-apocalyptic and dystopian novels. In fact, I began writing my own series last week called The Stranger series. I won't shamelessly promote it here, but if you're interested, send me an email and I can direct you to my site.

I look forward to all the new recommendations!

I hope you all have a great day!

Chris (kingtermite) | 48 comments Hello. My name is Chris. And I'm...well....I'm me. Why? Because I'm not you, obviously.

I actually sort of stumbled across this group looking for something else, but I'm a pretty big fan of dystopian stories, so I thought I'd pop in.

Faves:
Anthem
1984

Others I enjoyed:
Hunger Games
Brave New World
A Handmaid's Tale
Fahrenheit 451
Genesis of Shannara (fantasy, with dystopian twist)

Ones that were not so great:
Divergent Series (decent story, POORLY written)

I'm reading The Time Traveler's Wife right now. It's surprisingly a LOT better than I expected. The movie trailer made it look like a complete chick flick, but it's not.

Although it technically revolves around a love story, it's really more just the mechanism used for the purpose of POV so that you have one person randomly bopping around in time with the other person traveling the normal old linear/forward route. Very well written.

S.J. Romero (sjromero) Hi, Dystopia Land. My name is Steve and I'm wondering if a thread has been written about Stephen King's Gunslinger series? I've never read those books, but have wanted to for some time. Is it worth the effort, or does the end fall a bit flat like some of King's other big books (Stand, IT, for example). Thanks in advance.

Welcome Steve.

That's a great question. I'd like to know myself. It always looked interesting to me, but to be honest, the few Stephen King books I read didn't impress me all that much, so I'm a bit wary.

I would say yes. But I'm probably not the best person to answer this because I loved The Stand :) The Dark Tower series is definitely different from his other books, though -- it's more what I would call High Fantasy. Epic in scope, though it has a small "core" cast of characters. Some intriguing world-building and unusual secondary characters ranging from insane robots to wood demons. Does it fall flat? Well, people definitely have mixed feelings about the ending. I've read it twice and am still not sure I quite get it. But I'm quite sure I'll go back and read it again :)

Try this thread for a more in-depth discussion of your question: Is the Dark Tower worth reading?

message 545: by S.J. (new)

S.J. Romero (sjromero) Thanks, Michele, appreciate the answer / link. I too liked the Stand, just felt the ending could have been better - who am I though, right? Will definitely check out the link, then maybe head to my local library. Can't beat free when trying new stuff!

message 546: by Beau (new)

Beau Johnston (beau_johnston) Hi Steve. I've been wanting to read The Gunslinger series too. If you decide to read it, let us know what you think. It will be interesting to hear your thoughts on the storyline.

message 547: by Chris (new)

Chris (kingtermite) | 48 comments Michele wrote: "Try this thread for a more in-depth discussion of your question: Is the Dark Tower worth reading? "
Thank you. Since I'm not much of a King fan to begin with based on the few books I've read, this thread was enough to convince me not to invest in the Dark Tower series. Great to finally have a 'conclusion' to that question as I've thought about it for years.

message 548: by S.J. (new)

S.J. Romero (sjromero) @Chris, I too came away with a feeling of not convinced after reading that thread. However, I'm not convinced that it's bad, and I'm not convinced that it's good, so I'll probably bite the bullet and try book one. @Beau, will keep you posted, but it may be a while. Thanks, all!

Which ending are you thinking of, the original or the expanded edition? I much preferred the original ending. The expanded edition felt...I don't know, cartoony?
