We were discussing science vs. religion tonight in my Living Religions class. Some Christians believe in evolutionary creation, which credits God with creating Darwinian evolution and overseeing its workings... What do y'all think of that? I think that's along the lines of what you were talking about, Melissa.

I know Stephen Hawking is not a believer, but there is a thought-provoking quotation of his: "What is it that breathes fire into the equations and makes a universe for them to describe?"

message 62: by [deleted user] (new)

There is a February 4 debate with Bill Nye vs. Ken Ham at the Creation Museum. I'm interested in streaming that... it should be interesting.

I agree that Progressive Christianity is very dangerous. You either believe the whole bible or you don't. You can't say you believe just the old testament or the new testament. To say you believe that God created the world through evolution is to cancel out the whole idea of a personal God and if Genius isn't true why should I believe the rest of the bible about Jesus?

We're starting evolution next semester in Bio and I have some pretty solid arguments to begin with. Not sure how much I'll say and I haven't met my teacher yet but this should be interesting XD

it is.....also infuriating after reading The Case for a Creator.

I guess the teachers just assume no one as differing opinions and if we do we usually just don't say anything.

Usually.

I'm very good at arguing lol jk

message 70: by [deleted user] (new)

Evolution used to be taught as a theory. Now it's being taught as fact.

Sam (Readlovelaughlive) | 4404 comments I'm a pretty solid debater, but I've never bothered. Most people will never listen to reason, and you minister more with honey than with vinegar.

message 72: by Sam (new)

Sam (Readlovelaughlive) | 4404 comments I only debate when I am required to, at least in person. I'm more willing to debate casually when in writing. I'm so uncompetitive :P

message 73: by Sam (new)

Sam (Readlovelaughlive) | 4404 comments Don't feel pressured to debate it, Caro. Move if you feel God moves you, but open rebuke is not always necessary to make a point ;)

Elizabeth, you are right on. Our church has been teaching a lot on the "foundations of our faith." Even though we can't understand God, the whole point of faith is to know that we can't! We aren't ever called to understand, we are called to believe. We can't fit God into the box we make for Him. If He said He made the world in 6 days, He made the world in 6, 24-hour days. Seems like a lot to us, but HE'S GOD. It's all about faith.

message 77: by T.C. (new)

T.C. Slonaker | 566 comments Thursday nights, I teach the little kids (ages 6-10). And last night, I taught them about DNA. Life could not have randomly appeared as some scientists say, because our DNA is too complicated. And people could not "evolved" from other creatures, because our DNA is set. We always come out as people. It is in the design. We will never come out with a tail or feathers or wings, because that is not in human DNA.

I did an example with the kids where I took a handful of Alphabits cereal and threw it in the air. I did it over and over, telling the kids I would keep doing it until it came out completely organized into the verse, Genesis 1:1. You know what? It never did. And it never would. But then, we sat together and took the letters to try to make a verse with our own hands. We were the designers; we were the creators. And it worked. We made sense of it. We had to use some letter, and get rid of others, because only certain ones would work together, and it took a person's knowledge to know that, not random chance. Chance always used all the letters and couldn't separate out the ones that didn't work.

We people are not made with all the chemicals of the universe. God took the ones He knew would make humans, and arranged them in such a complicated way, it is isn't possible for it to happen by chance.

OK. I'm done. Sorry to go on and on like that, but I love teaching about God and His greatness!

Thank you! It so important that we understand our foundations, so that we can grow in our faith.

Awww, that's so awesome! Mind if I steal it sometime? I take care of kids too.

I've never had a test on evolution, but if I did I would never have had the guts to do that. That's great. :)

message 84: by T.C. (new)

T.C. Slonaker | 566 comments Yeah, that's a great idea! We Christians might get more respect if we are peaceful about our disagreements. (People who bomb abortion clinics give us a bad rep.)

I used to teach 2nd grade, and I had to teach about dinosaurs. I remember very pointed saying, "SOME people believe dinosaurs lived millions of years ago." And took out the question on the test that asked about when dinosaurs lived.

It was so good!!!! Though Bill Nyles didn't seem to be making a very good case, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a Christian.

message 91: by [deleted user] (new)

I have it playing right now. Loving it so far. Can't help but think though how ridiculous we must sound to nonbelievers. Our beliefs are not based on fact. Christianity is based on faith.

message 92: by T.C. (new)

T.C. Slonaker | 566 comments I haven't watched it yet - glad we can get a replay! I read some reactions to it, and the general consensus seemed to be that Nye was very condescending, while Ham was skillful at presenting the Gospel. But I wasn't sure if that was just because I was reading the thoughts of other Christians either.

message 94: by Rachel (new)

Rachel a lot of science is also based on "faith"--hypotheses, theories...there are actually very few absolutely certain scientific "facts"

message 95: by [deleted user] (new)

That's true....

message 96: by T.C. (new)

T.C. Slonaker | 566 comments Yes, it makes me mad that evolution and "old earth" can be taught in schools as though it were fact. In the Ham videos I have he presents a good point for kids to ask, "Were you there?" No, of course not. There was only One who was there, and He gave us a record of it. It must be beyond frustrating to God that people don't believe what He has told them.

message 97: by [deleted user] (new)

It's so easy to think that the earth is millions of years old, as scientists tell us. But is it really so impossible to think that the earth is only a few thousand years old? No. Scientists can't prove that their methods of finding the age of fossils are accurate. There are so many aging factors to consider.

message 98: by Elizabeth, He Satisfies My Soul (new)

Elizabeth (elizabethnovak) | 1575 comments Mod
Yeah, the media is making it seem like Nye won because he gave more science proof. But I thing that Ham made quite a big point of how it takes just as much faith to believe in evolution as in creation. Nye just kept saying "I don't know. We just don't know." Well Ham just referred to the bible.

evolution in bio....

my patience has been stretched to a whole new level

they still teach embryology!!!!!!!!!! that's FORTY YEARS OUTDATED! that human fetuses, chicken, rabbit, fish fetuses ALL LOOK THE SAME AT CONCEPTION

FACEPALM

MAJOR FACEPALM

those pictures/diagrams were proven faked/exaggerated and the scientist discredited FORTY YEARS AGO
