WOW--I am so bookmarking this page! I had no idea there are so many non-European fantasies out there!I'd like to add another recommendation--it's more historical fiction than fantasy, but still a great read: Mara, Daughter of the Nile by Eloise Jarvis McGraw. The protagonist is an Egyptian girl living in ancient Egypt, who works as a double spy. Enough said :)

I admit that I'm impossible to satisfy, LOL. When you've been reading as long as I have and as many books as I have it's really hard to find something that feels fresh, different or has a new take on old tropes or even better, turns them upside down completely. Add to that finding non-Eurocentric characters/settings and that task is nearly herculean in scope. Thanks for the list. *off to browse now*OMG, I read Tomoe Gozen decades ago! It was awesome! A female samurai is still very cool. Way before the kick-assedness that was Xena!
@ TheFountainPenDiva: Glad you mentioned Tomoe Gozen! I read about her in The Tale of the Heike and found it fascinating when she was the only female samurai compared to all the other court women. This is more about movies--but I remember a critic saying that "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" was nothing new, because Xena has been doing it for years, and I wanted to point out that as early as the 1920s, there has been Chinese films featuring women in martial arts.

Very true about Chinese films, even the schlocky ones from the 70's. Xena's just my automatic frame of reference, LOL.

This is a list full of stuff I knew but also books i've never heard of. I thought of @FountainPenDiva as her updates are often filled with book recommendations that are outside of what she's looking for =D
I hope someone gets something new out of this list!
