Melodie (melodieco) I was surprised by how much I liked these books, especially the newest one. Who knew buttons could be interesting??

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Love these books - and they make me want to check out buttons in second hand shops, lol. I think the last one was the one I liked the best.

AngryGreyCat (angrygreycatreads) | 665 comments I picked this one up from the library today. I have to admit it is not one I ever would have picked up...buttons? But I am going into it with an open mind.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I had serious doubts myself when I first picked it up - but was happy with how much I enjoyed it.

I finished Button Holed yesterday. It was very very good. I like the characters and the way the mystery tied together - even the classic gather all the suspects denouement near the end. Not so crazy about the ex-husband though.

I am somewhat aware of buttons because I used to sew a lot of my own clothes. Selecting the buttons was a significant part of the project and often as or more expensive than the fabric. Still I was not aware of button collecting or thought much about the history of buttons. It's more interesting than I realized.

AngryGreyCat (angrygreycatreads) | 665 comments I am glad that I read this book this month. It is not one I ever would have picked up on my own, however upon reflection I do remember being fascinated as a child with my grandma's and my mother's button tins. I finished the book in a couple hours, a very quick read.

Spoiler?1?

I found the book well written, which is a blessing after reading some of the self published free and 99 cent offerings on Amazon that desperately need editing. I liked Josie, the main character, a little stereotypical. I also liked that the theme did not seem to overwhelm everything else about the book. My biggest issue was that I found the whole Nevin bringing her on board with the mystery solving heavy handed and unrealistic.

I am giving this book the benefit of the doubt because perhaps some of the "heavy handedness" is due to this beign the first book in the series. Perhaps the author is trying to set up for the rest of the series. There was enough good about the book that I will try another in the series.

Vivian Williams (a_moonlit_rose) | 1 comments I have the first two books on my shelf I bought at a book store a few weeks ago. After reading this I think I will start the first one today! Thanks for the reviews!

I also loved dumping out my moms jar of buttons and sorting though them when I was little! Next time Im at a antique store and run across a jar of them.. I will pick up for the daughters to do the same with!

Diana (dianabeth) | 12 comments I borrowed this book from the library, but pages 93 and 94 are missing. Could someone give me a brief summary of what I'm missing? Thanks in advance :)

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Diana wrote: "I borrowed this book from the library, but pages 93 and 94 are missing. Could someone give me a brief summary of what I'm missing? Thanks in advance :)"

Josie continues her conversation with Hugh, talking about how Estelle and Kate were like "oil and water" but that Kate, while never feeling threatened by Estelle, had agreed to be on Estelle's arts and crafts show, and Estelle was so sure it would be a huge hit that she sunk a bunch of her own money into promoting the segment, even though she doesn't have a lot of money left. And then Kate pulled out of the show. Estelle didn't tell Josie about this, but apparently she was so angry she showed up on set and threw a massive hissy fit about it and had to be escorted off the premises.

Hugh says she was mad enough to kill, but admits to Josie he's hoping Estelle *did* kill Kate so the police won't look at him. Josie starts to wonder aloud to Hugh if he has a reason to worry; did he kill Kate? Hugh freaks and claims that even Josie thinks he could have done it and the police are going to tear his life apart bit by bit. That's why Josie HAS to help him - she "has to do something about it". Josie says (last line on page 94): "I can't do anything until I know what really happened."

Hope that helps! :)

I started this but couldn't get out of the first chapter. Wasn't crazy about some of the language and the "tone" that was being set. Glad I was able to return my Kindle edition to Amazon & get my $7.99 back!

I'm finding that cozy mysteries just aren't the same good books that they used to be, which is sad, IMO.

Melodie (melodieco) Elizabeth wrote: "I started this but couldn't get out of the first chapter. Wasn't crazy about some of the language and the "tone" that was being set. Glad I was able to return my Kindle edition to Amazon & get my $..."

I don't really remember any "language" in this book. I remember that you found something offensive about Earlene Fowler's Benni Harper book that was a read of the month a month or so ago. I have wondered ever since what it was that you found objectionable in it as they are some of the least objectionable books I've ever read. Could you tell me what it was about that book that you didn't like? I think you said you only read part of the first chapter on it, too.

message 17: by AngryGreyCat (new)

AngryGreyCat (angrygreycatreads) | 665 comments i wish that I still had the book in front of me to reread the first chapter because I really don't remember anything that would make me think it could possibly be offensive. Mine was a library book so i returned it already. Was there obscenity? I honestly don't remember or do mean the author's "voice"? Just curious. I also read Kerry Greenwood's Corinna Chapman series which I love but she often veers into territory that I think readers who favor cozies might find objectionable (sex, religious cult, and drug references). I almost hesitate to classify a couple of her books as cozies due to this.

I don't remember the conversation about Earlene Fowler's work but I can't pinpoint anything that would be objectionable about them.

Is it objectionable or is it just not what you want from a cozy? I could see someone who is a big fan of the style of the Agatha Christie, MC Beaton, Simon Brett, etc. may not be attracted to the more "theme" related modern cozies.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I'm curious too - I don't remember anything offensive about Button Holed either - although the ex-husband comes off wickedly obnoxious at first. Maybe that's it?

As far as the Bennie Harper series - I'd go so far as to say you could argue (especially the later books) that these could be classified as Christian mysteries.

Hoping Elizabeth will come back and tell us more...it also might help others to recommend books she might like better. :)

AngryGreyCat (angrygreycatreads) | 665 comments i just got Hot Button (Button Box Mystery, #2) by Kylie Logan from my local bookstore. I will be reading it soon.

message 20: by Penny (new)

Penny just got mine from the library too! I keep missing the reads as the library doesnt have them but this one was there.

Glad you are running late FanFicfan as I am so often the last to read a BOTM.

Melissa | 140 comments I started this book yesterday. I am not interested in buttons per say so I will see how it plays out in the story.

It sounds like several of us are starting this one late. Not sure if I'll finish this by Friday, but I am enjoying it.

Melissa | 140 comments Just finished Button Holed last night. I enjoyed it and I wasn't sure about the button theme, but it wasn't overdone. I really liked reading about the places around Chicago and some of the behind the scenes Hollywood-type stuff.

The ex-husband Kaz kind of got on my nerves. I wasn't sure why Josie was always salivating over him. He seems like a real loser and I didn't like how they threw in that tryst of his with the married woman on the road trip. I hope he's not going to be a major character in the rest of the series.

I would read the next book if the opportunity came up, but I don't know that I will run out and buy it. I have so many other books in my TBR pile right now. I will see if I find them at Half-Price Books or something.

Kaz is in the 2nd one, but hardly at all in the 3rd.

message 26: by AngryGreyCat (new)

AngryGreyCat (angrygreycatreads) | 665 comments I finished Hot Button, Hot Button (Button Box Mystery, #2) by Kylie Logan . I didn't enjoy it as much as the first one. There was much more technical button information and it was not set in Josie's store. There is still enough good about it that I will probably try Panic Button.

The second book was probably my least favourite of the ones written so far - I liked it, but not nearly as much as the others, and the last one was probably my favorite.

message 28: by Penny (new)

Penny well I finally finished this and was pleasantly surprised - what a nerd Josie was - just like me with cross stitch. I found it a touch predictable and worked out some of the twists before they happened but I still found it endearing and readable. Will never look at buttons in the same way again!!

AngryGreyCat (angrygreycatreads) | 665 comments I finished book 3 Panic Button (Button Box Mystery, #3) by Kylie Logan and after being slightly disappointed with book 2 Hot Button (Button Box Mystery, #2) by Kylie Logan I am happy to say Book 3 was the best book in the series and I quite enjoyed it.

I never got to finish book 1, but I'd like to find the time. Good to know it's worth going on to book 3.

I liked book 1, book 2 was kind of rough for me to finish. I don't know exactly why. But book 3 was very good, definitely the best in the series so far.
