This is where we discuss Monkey High. We are reading and discussing volumes 1-3. Please remember to hide all spoilers.

It's hard enough fitting in at a new school while dealing with family problems... Will Haruna remain jaded and distance herself from everyone around her? Or will Masaru win her over with his monkey magic?

Fauuzzie (faize) Just picked up volume 1!:)

Kristen | 1392 comments I didn't think that I would like this series and I was correct. I found the whole thing rather bland. The characters were all indistinguishable from each other and I felt no connection to them at all. I thought that the plot was boring and cliche. It wasn't horrendous or anything, but I feel like I might as well not have read it for how much it affected me.

Fauuzzie (faize) I felt the same about Gentleman's Alliance Cross. I kept getting all of the characters confused because, for one they all looked the same, but two they were all dumb and ditzy and lacking all personality.

I'll read volume one of Monkey High tomorrow and see if I'll have the same opinion about this series.

Fauuzzie (faize) Ok, I just finished volume one, I agree that it wasn't that good.

The pacing was terrible. Barely halfway through the first volume and Haruna and Macharu are already going out. Haruna was annoying, and none of the characters were developed at all.

The only reason I didn't give it one star was because of a few semi-funny moments, that I know could definitely have been funnier if the story was better plotted.

I thought the pacing was really off, too. Maybe it makes more sense for the series as a whole, but for the first volume, I think it moved too fast.

Fauuzzie (faize) Exactly! For example, in Fruits Basket, (view spoiler) And here, they starting dating halfway through volume one!

I actually love how Natsuki Takaya develops her characters and their relationships with each other beforehand, instead of just shoving them together and expecting the relationship to automatically bloom on it's own. Unfortunately, with Monkey High, the latter is the case.

And as you can see, I have much respect for Fruits Basket:D

Kristen | 1392 comments I agree. As much as it can be infuriating for a couple to take forever to get together, it can be just as bad if they become a couple too quickly. In this case, it didn't work for me because I didn't get enough time to get to know the characters and how they would interact with each other before they started dating. There has to be some tension. I just didn't really care that much because I wasn't invested in them. I think it was a poor writing choice.

Fauuzzie (faize) Yup. I don't think I'll be reading any more of Monkey High.
