Not sure if this fits in here, but I am a big fan of 'pay what you want' deals, and this is the one I am most familiar with:

http://www.storybundle.com

These folks have regular bundles of ebooks you can buy, grouped around a common theme. I have bought several of them and I have found authors I would not have tried otherwise, and starting at $1 for 8 books you can't really go wrong

Did I mention the Wellington 15 May evening for kid's book authors and illustrators?

P.D.R. Lindsay (pdrlindsay) | 1760 comments Nice pay from these people. And a very new type of unusual market.

Eileen (eileenmueller) | 84 comments What a fantastic link - they pay you just to have rights for 90 days! I love it. Get those short stories polished!

P.D.R. Lindsay (pdrlindsay) | 1760 comments Edited to add:
Ah, somehow I missed off this and was left sounding snappy. Sorry about that. Here's what I wrote but muffed pasting in.

Trouble with the NZSA Kobo comp is that the winner is only offered for sale in NZ.

Frankly why bother when you can have world wide distribution? A print run in NZ is 2000 and you'd be lucky to sell all those. An ebook run isn't going to be much more and people, alas, use Amazon more than Kobo.

It's a nice idea but if you're serious about writing you need to have a wider distribution than tiny old NZ. NZ is only a very small city in the big world of publishing.

message 7: by Angela (new)

Angela Oliver (lemurkat) | 50 comments In regards to Kobo - self publishing via Writing Life is VERY easy! It took me only a short period of time to get my book up on there. All I can say is that winning the competition might do wonders for your marketing, but aside from that, there's not too much of a benefit.

We sell a lot of kobos at our work, and they have more ebooks on their website than Amazon. Just so you know.

A.J. | 27 comments FYI http://kiwiwriters.org/ is back up and running again with lots of challenges, little ones to shake up writing and bigger ones like SocNoc the kiwi NaNoWriMo arm etc.

And for anyone who is cash strapped it has the advantage of being free :)

Looks like a fun event. These flash fiction stories are only 300 words. I've been writing 500 word flash stories. Time to shave off a few words.

P.D.R. Lindsay (pdrlindsay) | 1760 comments The Albury/Pleasant Point Presbyterian Parish, publishers of the successful and highly-acclaimed Fuel for the Soul anthology of spiritual writing in 2009, and equally successful I Saw Love Today in 2011 are doing it again!

Following requests from readers for a third collection, together with a perceived gap in the market for a book of hope for those people touched by cancer, the Parish's publication team are calling for new submissions of writing - this time with a message of hope and encouragement. They want to encourage those that have had past experiences with
cancer (themselves or through friends or family members) to put pen to paper and tell their story in a positive and encouraging light.

The Parish will be working alongside the SC Cancer Society with this project.

The publication team are asking for submissions of poetry or prose with a 'hope' theme. They will select a 1st ($250 cash prize), 2nd ($100 cash prize) and 3rd ($50 cash prize) and select 50 (or more) pieces of writing for the new anthology.
The publication will be launched in early 2014. Entry forms and more information are available by contacting Anne Dowall
(03) 6147324, anne.alf@clear.net.nz, or emailing Karalyn Reid karalynjoyce@xtra.co.nz. The Parish's Facebook page is: Pleasant Point Presbyterian Parish, NZ.

Limited numbers of Fuel for the Soul, and I Saw Love Today are still available by sending a cheque for $20 (two-for-one special price), plus $2 postal details to Yvonne Gray,16 Runa Terrace, Pleasant Point, South Canterbury.

Pleasant Point writer and leader of the anthology team, Karalyn Reid encourages people to have a go - they don't need to be published writers. She expects this book, like I Saw Love Today to truly touch the reader.

P.D.R. Lindsay (pdrlindsay) | 1760 comments Yes, apart from paying money out to PR companies You Tube seems to be the big selling point. Wish I could get something put together for it but am hopeless with techy stuff. Am going to try though with the help of some pals at the local radio.

P.D.R. Lindsay (pdrlindsay) | 1760 comments On the 1st Sunday morning of each month from now until December I have nice little nook for a stall in the Oamaru heritage area -Harbour st. I will be selling our Writer's Choice books along with collectables like pretty china and glassware and am happy to support other Kiwi writers by welcoming them to come and sell their books with ours.

Anyone wanting to come down and needs to spend a night here is welcome to sleep in the writer's retreat room in my home. Check out www.rowanlindsay.co.nz for details of that.

message 29: by A.J. (new)

A.J. | 27 comments for anyone who's interested - I probably won't becuase I don't believe in paying money to enter a competition - but otherwise it looks good (especially as I like destroying the notion that writing can only be a solitary affair). http://northwrite.co.nz/collaborative...
