Michelle I read the first couple chapters and was turned off by most of the characters. I was also turned off by all the un-explained slang thrown around. So far, the book kind of remindes me of Lord of the Flies.

I loved both hunger games and divergent and I was excited about this one because of it's reviews. But now I'm not so sure if I'll like this one. Does it get better?

Adam yep definitely it does

Annie Give it a few more chapters and see if you get into it.

Jo Ann I didn't care much for the slang either.

ARE YOU KIDDING??!!

The slang is AWESOME! How cool is it to have your characters swear, but not actual swear words and it SOUNDS cool too??? Don't be put off, lap it up!

I loved this series more than The Hunger Games and I would give my shuck life for this book!! Omg <3

Maurine I loved this series as well...
I agree the first few chapters of the first book were hard to get into because there were so many new things to familiarize yourself with... the language is one thing... but even trying to figure out the plot took some time...
But trust me... keep reading... it gets intense.. and the second book was even better!!
Im still waiting for my 3rd book to arrive so I can start reading it next!

Ezekiel Carsella words like: shank, shuck, and klunk are awesome! they get explained be patient my friend the book is good. and don't let anyone I mean ANYONE tell you Scorch trials is bad or full of this "filler" i hear of? what is book filler? i mean scorch trials is action packed like maze runner.

Scorch trials is an amazing book!! I loved it

Michelle So, I gave the book another try.

I'm about 80% done at the moment. Maybe the slang was meant to annoy the reader at first in order to allow the reader to empathize with Thomas' confusion.

And even later than that, I realized that you can definately swap specific swear words out for specific slang words used in the book 100% of the time and have things make perfect sense. Which is, actually, kind of cool.

please elaborate...

Michelle He's lost and confused and actually comments about how this confustion annoys him. They are calling him all of these names and they are calling eachother all of these names. Eventually he figures it out all by him self (well kinda) and so does the reader.

The first time around the slang was a little jarring for me. I was as fustrated as him. Except that he doesn't stop and I did. The second time I was prepared for it better. The second time, I thought I knew what he was going through a little bit better.

It also annoys him that no one will answer his questions, despite the fact that most guys there know exactly what he's going through. And yet they still don't bother to help him through it.

Maybe it's some kind of right of passage to them.

Omg get over yourself! The slang is cool. Thomas finds it confusing at first, yes, but he also ends up USING it. So just get over it. It's awesome and you seem to be the only one with a problem. Leave it alone, this is my favorite book :(

Diane I hated the slang - it was annoying but I loved the book and once the story took over the slang wasn't as bad. I read the trilogy and the prequel - The Kill Order. Though I certainly didn't agree with everything, I loved them all.

Cherie I thought it was weird at first two, but I got into it.. :p

if you read my earlier comment you would know that I also think that its cool.

the comment you responded to was meant to be a literary discussion / commentary about a single aspect of a book I'm reading. It was not meant to be an insult, and certainly is not a reflection of the entire book.

Even if I was insulting maze runner, I'm allowed to have my opinion and I'm allowed to talk about it here as long as I'm civil about it. You should learn to hear critiques without loosing your opinions.

Sorry. It just makes me angry when people insult my favourite book. Not saying you were.

But if someone tells me I need to 'learn' from other people again, I'm going to scream and attack people with caps.

Maryam Are you kidding ??!! I loved the slang in the book

Ivan Vega Personally, i liked the slang in the book. It gave it more of a natural feeling. They're all kids there, and you can't expect kids to talk clean English. So of course, normal kids would make slang, instead. In real life, no kids talk proper. That makes it more realistic, like these were actual kids. At the same time, it was abit confusing at first, since you didnt really get an explenation for what the word means, but as you go on you can tell by the context and sort of guess what they mean.

Flora Yeah, no. The slang was really off-putting. But on the overall, I will say that it wasn't fully to the book's detriment. This book has far worse issues (blatant Mary Sues, no personalities, the writing style etc) to concentrate on.

Jessica Susterich What the shuck are you talking about? The slang is better than any we have in real life.

So true!

Lol, yea!

Erika Hébert Continue reading it shuck-face! Things will start making sense, though I can't promise that everything is explained.
