I think it's possible to read TID first, I mean the way the author recommends they be read is kind of to alternate back and forth. I think the first three TMI books kind of lay the groundwork and explain the Shadowhunter world a bit more in depth than TID.Here's the order Cassie recommends they be read:
City of Bones
City of Ashes
City of Glass
Clockwork Angel
City of Fallen Angels
Clockwork Prince
City of Lost Souls
Clockwork Princess
I think that would be the best way, because there are connections to both series you may not pick up on if you read all TMI then TID or the other way around.
Happy reading, I hope you enjoy both series :)
I read the Infernal Devices first then the Mortal Instruments because for some reason Infernal Devices seemed more interesting.

Technically you could read which ever series first. Ms. Clare made it that way, but it's much more fun and interesting if you read the Infernal Devices first. =)
I read the mortal instruments first ( all five of them) then I started the Infernal devices. It was fun to match up who the descendent of who.
I accidently read City of Glass first ... silly me, lol. :>It's best not to read the Infernal Devices first because I think you have to get a hang of the Shadowhunter world through the modern setting before going back in time
I have changed my mind since the last time someone asked this question. I would have liked to have read them in order of publication, so that is how I recommend you read them. It is interesting not only how well the story would have lined up had I read them in this order, but also how much the writing matures & improves through the published order of these books.
