JoLene (trvl2mtns) ◈ Duration: May 1st PDT 8:00 AM (BST 4PM) to May 12th PDT 8:00 AM (BST 4 PM)

Check out the original rules post for the time zone calculator.

◈ Participants commit to a “read-as-much-as-you-can event.”

◈ Team’s Page Goal: Each participant sets a page goal – the total sum of goals from each team member will be the Team's Page Goal.

◈ Keep us updated on your progress! Every few hours (as long as it doesn't interfere with your reading), post a status update on how the reading is going in the threads below!

◈ At the end of the Read-a-Thon event post your final results on the thread, as well as the books read during that time.

The only way to keep count is to check the number of pages before the start of the Read-a-Thon week and at the end. The difference will be the total of pages read

Participants should avoid tagging any books the 2 hours prior the start of the read-a-thon and the 2 hours after the end of the read-a-thon.

Be realistic. If you are only capable of reading one/two books a week, unless we're talking about Les Miserables or The Game of Thrones, don't set a 1000 pages goal. On the other hand, if you are a speed reader a 500 pages goal seems rather low.

Minimum page goal per member: 600 pages - average of 50 pages a day
For members with Challenge Goals 50 books or less minimum page goal will be 300 pages.

Only pages from books marked as read count.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) ~Read-a-Thon Scoring Update~

The rule An extra 5 points if all the team members participate in the read-a-thon is officially excluded.

The Read-a-Thon will allow each team to win a maximum of 155 points, distributed as follows:

◈5 points if the team submit a mini-challenge idea till the start of the Read-a-Thon

◈Points for goal:
*1 point per participating member reaching goal
*20 points if 50% of the team participating members reach page goal
*30 points if team goal is reached
*50 points if all the team participating members reach page goal

◈Points for color: MAUVE
*1 point per participating member reading a book with the team color
*30 points if 50% of the team participating members read a book with the team color
*50 points if all the team participating members read a book with the team color

◈Points for theme: YOUNG ADULT
*1 point per participating member reading a book matching the team's theme
*30 points if 50% of the team participating members read a book matching the team's theme
*50 points if all the team participating members read a book matching the team's theme

The winning team will receive a 4 book advantage

What does this mean for me?
* Read one book from young adult genre
* Read one book with a mauve cover
* Any books read from May 1-12 will count against your page goal; books can be less than 160 pages
* If may change your personal page goal up to May 8th. If you are not tracking to reach it, please change because we do get points for hitting the goal.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) Tracking during Readathon

GR tracks the books read and pages read stats automatically, but as a double check I'd like to each person to create a post to track books read.

Please make a copy of my post to use during the Readathon. The formatting is a bit awkward because I accounted for GR always putting the book links at the bottom of the screen.

I can still track your progress, but it would be easier if I had one post to look at.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES

There are two optional ways to participate in the RaT. Please note --- there are no extra points awarded so please do not feel you need to participate.

Mini-challenges: The mods are posting the mini-challenges that teams have created here: Mini-challenges
You will post your answers in the Read-a-thon thread.

The other are mini-games which Barbara pointed out. These are more like puzzles. Mini-games and you will post in the same thread.

Barbara ★ Question? I thought I saw a post stating that books started before the RAT and finished during would count. Is this correct?

I started The Girl Who Disappeared Twice by Andrea Kane as an audiobook before the RAT started and finished this morning. Do I count all 400 pages or just the 183 pages from May 1st?

message 30: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ Sorry for the late update. I wasn't following this discussion and forgot to post daily. I'll try to post as I finish a book. I do a lot of reading over the weekend so I'll get a big push this weekend.

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 21 comments I think you only count the pages read since May 1st.

message 32: by jingles (new)

jingles Good morning team. I finished my mauve colored cover book last night, which puts me at 732 pages towards my goad of 1,000 pages.

I'm reading a book now that is 560 pages, which I will finish later this evening. That will put me at a total of 1,292 pages.

Do you think I should adjust my goal? I'm sure I could easily clear another 1,000 pages, and I think we have until May 8th for any adjustments, right?

Just let me know what you think.

Happy Friday!

:)

Barbara ★ wrote: "Question? I thought I saw a post stating that books started before the RAT and finished during would count. Is this correct?"

Let me check with Sonia and get back to you, Barbara★. Before, when we were using GRs stats/page-counter, that was the case, since it only tracks "finished" books. Now that we are tracking them manually, I'm not so sure.

I'll find out.

message 34: by Valerie (new)

Valerie I thought that's what the "Exceptions" was for - books finished, but not started during the RaT?

Moderators of NBRC | 1212 comments Mod
Sonia's Ruling
The rule is the same.

I gave it some thinking yesterday before going to sleep, and it's easier that way - plus slower readers with chunk books wouldn't reach their goals and I don't want people to drop out because we changed the rules after the RaT start.

message 36: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) Previously we were using the book stats to track, but since there seem to be some timing issues, we are now just using your books read list.

For my audio book that I had started before, I noted where I was and only used partial pages. Barbara, it is up to you whether you want to use all or partial as in the rules it seems OK to use all.

@jingles -- way to go reading machine!!! Let's wait until closer to May 8th to decide because if the whole team makes the goal than we get extra points -- that way if someone has a non-reading emergency :-D than your overage will help.

message 37: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) Valerie wrote: "I thought that's what the "Exceptions" was for - books finished, but not started during the RaT?"

Yes, I put that in before I knew that they were allowing books started before the Readathon to count. Also, I read a fair amount of graphic novels (especially if I'm trying to fit in a few extra for challenges).

Yeah -- they haven't been that clear on how they want us to report stuff, but looking at the spreadsheet that Sonia did, it looks like we will report the pages. I do a quick validation on what you guys report to me by going to your shelf and looking at page counts. If a page count is lower (as in the case of a partial read), there isn't a problem :-D

Ladies -- we are halfway through the RaT and you gals ROCK!!!

* If your name has a star, please check your editions. The one on your "read" shelf is different than you reported in your RaT post.
** Thilde, I think that Club Dead is a mauve cover, not a young adult.

May 8 is the final day to change any goals. If you don't think you will be able to get your page goal complete, please think about lowering it. Pages on unfinished books will not count to your goal.
