Susan I would like to nominate The Beast Must Die. Listed as one of the Observers 1,000 books you must read before you die, this is a classic Golden Age mystery, featuring Nigel Strangeways and written by Nicholas Blake (pen name of Cecil Day-Lewis).

When a hit and run driver kills crime writer Frank Cairns six year old son, he decides to track down the man responsible and plan the perfect murder.

Arpita (BagfullofBooks) (bagfullofbooks) | 157 comments Oh. I was going to back Leslie's Morse choice this time but Susan, that book does sound good!

That is on my TBR shelf so I would be happy with that :)

It is also on the list of top 100 mystery novels of all time (which is why it is on my TBR shelf!)

The Silent World of Nicholas Quinn by Colin Dexter. Maybe? :)"

I still want to read Last Seen Wearing, which is earlier in the series, but it seems like there is some feeling that earlier isn't necessarily better. I would bow to the knowledge of someone who has read them...

message 5: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine (saanichlori) I nominate the first in the Inspector Lynley series A Great Deliverance by Elizabeth George. I've come late to the show with this author, but got this book to read, and would like to share my comments with the group.

message 6: by Shera (new)

Shera (goodreadscomShera) | 0 comments I would like to nominate any Morse book. Colin Dexter created great characters in Morse and Lewis.

message 7: by HJ (new)

HJ | 223 comments The Beast Must Die is very good.

message 8: by Sonali (new)

Sonali V | 129 comments I haven't read any Nigel Strangeways, would like to try.

message 9: by Tricia (new)

Tricia | 22 comments I'm in for a Colin Dexter! Will let the group decide which as it's been ages since I have read him.

message 10: by Charlene (new)

Charlene Sonnenborn | 5 comments Just reading the comments has inspired me to read an "Inspector Morse" mystery. I have seen every episode of the television series, but believe I have only read one novel, and that was many years ago. Thanks to everyone for the ideas!

Poornima | 46 comments Beast Must die sounds interesting!

message 12: by Penny (new)

Penny | 353 comments I too nominate the first Morse which is Last Bus to Woodstock (Inspector Morse, #1) by Colin Dexter or any other Morse as the whole set is sitting on the shelf calling me!!!

message 13: by Joan (new)

Joan | 314 comments I love Colin Dexter. Any of his books would be a great nominee for June as far as I'm concerned.

It would also be great to read one of the Supt Diamond books by Peter Lovesey. For concreteness, how about Stagestruck?

message 14: by Shera (new)

Shera (goodreadscomShera) | 0 comments I've checked the availability of the Morse books and only 5 are on Kindle, Nook, Hardback, Paperback and used. Two are at the end of the series and one didn't get a great review. I pick The Way Through The Woods to nominate for June because it won the Gold Dagger in 1992 and I thought it was a good example Colin Dexter's character.

Well, at least 10 of them, including Last Bus to Woodstock and Last Seen Wearing, are available as paperbacks from Amazon.
