Please pick up the Cress. It is sooo good and it starts to bring everything together in preparation for Winter which is the final book in the series from everything I have heard. Also Fairest is good too. But that is just my humble recommendation.

I hated that book so much too. And then I made the mistake of watching the movie which made me hate the book even more. This book hasw turned me off to Gillian's other books and from the looks of reviews I have read on her other books I don't think I am missing much.

Nicole N. (A Myriad of Books) (amyriadofbooks) Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

I hated the main character, so I feel as if I can't get into the story if there's a main character I can't even like.

Also, Uprooted by Naomi Novik. I heard RAVE reviews but I didn't even finish the book! >_<

I completely agree. I couldn't finish it either.

message 308: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Eisenmeier (carpelibrumbooks) I hated The Hunger Games. My cousin was raving about it to me, but I didn't like the books.

message 309: by Reyes (new)

Reyes (reyessf) The Catcher in the Rye. Every now and then I think about rereading it in case I got it wrong the first time, but I just couldn't stand it.

My daughter read that in high school and she hated it too. I vaguely recall not liking it myself, but I definitely remember that I hated Lord of the Flies. I've thought about rereading it to see if my opinion would be different now that I'm older, but I just haven't been able to bring myself to do it. I completely understand your sentiment, Reyes.

I pretty much don't like any romantic fiction, it doesn't matter how great the author is. I am talking about classic authors because they really dig the graves and keep writing poetries. I am sorry maybe I am not that emotional.

Sana Zameer (sanazameer) | 121 comments I couldn't finish Thoughtless by S C Stephens. Really hated it. Also I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore was a painful read.

:P
What was it about the book that you hated?

message 319: by Andrea Thomas (new)

Andrea Thomas (athomas0925) Black Dagger Brotherhood. I tried reading the first book, forced myself is more accurate and just couldn't get past the first couple chapters of the second book. Hate all the detail for the bad guy and constantly skipped parts.

message 320: by Denise (new)

Denise (dregie) | 4 comments I couldn't get through The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I attempted both reading and audio but I just couldn't get past the midpoint. I also thought the 50 shades series was poorly written. I really liked The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand when I read it in high school but tried to read it recently and didn't like it.

I agree with Kristie, don't let us put you off, Reyes. I had to read it for school, so it wasn't a choice for me. Even though I didn't enjoy it, it had some fascinating insights into human nature.

message 324: by Rai (new)

Rai (hellorai) | 5 comments Gone Girl - I tried and just no. I really have no reason to hate it other than the ultimate he-said-she-said through out the parts of the book I read/skimmed/glanced over.
Game of Thrones - really? All of my book loving people rave about this series. I could not get past the first 50 pages. Horrible, messy and dull.
50 Shades of Grey - This is why every writer needs friends. If they do not have an editor, they need friends. The literary mistakes, misspellings, redundancy and over all tone of the whole 3 pages I read made my skin crawl. I had to bathe twice after I read those pages.
Outlander - I just read part of the first, but I just could not get into it. Too helpless female requires strong man to start off with I think.

Don't feel too bad -- I hated Gatsby and stopped in the middle of 50 Shades Darker (the 2nd one.) I just was bored & a little disturbed. Refused to see either movie. I also just could not get through Moby Dick no matter how hard I tried...

Oh Lord, Fangirl was so awful. I can't even deal with how awful it was. I had to stop reading it. Absolutely horrendous. I've given up on Rainbow Rowell.

And I'm listening to the audiobook of Uprooted right now and have gradually lost interest as it's gone on.

message 330: by Olivia (new)

Olivia I have to admit, I absolutely hated The Fault in Our Stars. It was so hyped up and was just utterly disappointing. The characters were developed poorly and too fast for me to feel any connection to them, and a lot of the plot was just too unbelievable.

message 331: by Kari (new)

Kari Nothing new here...but I despised the Twilight series. I was a teenager when the first book came out, and even then I found it to be a mediocre read. And for some strange reason unbeknownst to me, I allowed myself to be dragged through the other books upon the request of my sister, and each one became progressively worse until I ended up giving up half-way through Breaking Dawn. Basically it was a combination of the annoying characters, absured situations and weak writing that made this series intolerable for me.

The Look of Love is the worst book I have ever read!
Compared to this one, Twilight should won the Pulitzer Prize. Just saying

message 333: by Carol (new)

Carol | 57 comments I hated the 50 shades series, only read about 30 - 40 pages of the first one and just couldn't keep reading. The writing was dreadful and the characters sooo annoying. I also couldn't read The Luminaries, this was just boring and long winded

message 334: by Laura (new)

Laura | 1144 comments ...The Glass Castle. Everyone else who I've spoken to who has read this book has loved it. I hated it, and I would've abandoned it, except I really don't do that as a reader.

I get it, your dad was an alcoholic, you had no money, no furniture or proper clothing, your mother was too weak to leave him when she should have thought more for her children...over and over again ad nauseum. I felt sorrier for the animals in the memoir than the people.

It feels good to finally get to say it loud and proud rather than shirking away from the conversation.

Rebecca M. | 14 comments Anything by James Patterson. I've tried various books of his and couldn't make it to the halfway point in any of them. The man just cannot write in my opinion.

message 336: by [deleted user] (last edited Feb 20, 2016 02:33PM) (new)

I tried Matched by Ally Condie, and it was okay, so I went on to Crossed, the second book in the trilogy. But it was terribly boring, and I remember forcing myself to read it so much that my eyes were actually watering from boredom. When I finally inched over the last sickeningly trivial scramble of meaningless, pretentious words, I was relieved to be free if it. I don't mean to sound rude or anything, but I felt like the author was trying a bit too hard to be poetic and it came out not so good.

message 337: by Kari (new)

Kari Even though I did not hate it by any means, I decided to abandon Sarah J. Maas' The Throne of Glass series, after I finished the second one, Crown of Midnight. Which surprised me, seeing as I thought the first one was terrific. But Crown of Midnight nearly bored me to tears and left me utterly frustrated by the constant love-triangle that Celaena found herself in the center of. I felt her tangled love life was almost the main driven focus of the book, and I quickly lost interest, leaving me with no desire to ever pick up the third.

I pretty much just need to say ditto! By the time I got to the third one, I could tolerate it no longer. I skimmed through it at the most. What a nosedive.

I actually liked the first two books in this series, but I couldn't stand Heir of Fire or Queen of Shadows. It was like she decided to completely rewrite the characters, and all attempt at an interesting plot was thrown away for long passages about how much Celeana wanted to rip Rowan's clothes off!

message 340: by Barb (new)

Barb (barbie15) | 11 comments Twilight made me want to poke my eye balls out. I finished the first book and got a bit through the second and I thought I was going to die of boredom. Who cares who the girl picks vampire or ware-wolf just pick one of them a move on for crying out loud.

message 341: by Emma (new)

Emma (emmapalmave) | 15 comments The first time I read it, I really hated Wuthering Heights, and I'm still not very fond of it. By the way, I was fifteen. It was sold to me as a love story, and was I in for a surprise! I try to re-read it every couple of years because I still believe people's perspective on certain issues change as we get older.

message 342: by Jara (new)

Jara (jarabrooke) Faulkner's 'As I Lay Dying' was the bane of my existence. I appreciate the complexity of the story now that I've read it, but I never want to open that story again.

message 343: by julianna ➹ (last edited Jun 09, 2016 11:16AM) (new)

julianna ➹ (juliannnnna) I hated Fahrenheit 451, 1984, Twilight, The Crown, Weathered, and Lord of the Flies.
Honestly, I don't dislike The Fault in Our Stars, but I just don't like all of the hype that it gets. It's not that good.
I also really disliked Gone.

message 344: by Viki (new)

Viki Scheldrup (uffda) | 1 comments I've found that my reading tastes divurge greatly from main stream. If a book gets a lot of hype, I'm willing to read it, but usually don't like them that much.

message 345: by D.Ann (new)

D.Ann | 9 comments Anna Karenina. Read the whole thing back when I was in school - I was never put off by classics or very long books even at that age. But when a book starts off with a long list of characters and I have to repeatedly refer back to it while reading because there are just so many of them - that does put me off. I just really disliked this book. I recently went back to it as an adult and found there are some parallels in the book that the author was showing that my teenage self couldn't appreciate. And I also didn't realize exactly how big of a mess the main character was. So, I have a bit more appreciate for it now than before - but not by much.

The Great Gatsby. Oh my word. Again, I read it in school and loathed it. I felt the characters were vapid and shallow and, quite frankly, irritating to be around. So again, I went back to it as an adult to see if my perspective could change. Nope. Still just as vapid, just as shallow, and most definitely just as irritating.

message 346: by Tiffany (last edited Jun 09, 2016 09:32PM) (new)

Tiffany (shixam) So, BOTM nominations and sorting through my books to sell (Sadly, I need to make room on my bookshelf) have reminded me of my loathing for Dorothy Must Die.

It seemed safest to just let it out here and now before I end up spoiling the potential discussion thread with a rant.

I LOVE The Wizard of Oz. I absolutely ADORE it. My dad and I record the movie EVERY. SINGLE. TIME we find TCM playing it. In elementary school, each class got to go to the library once a week. What did I check out literally every other week it was available? The Wizard of Oz (and The Witch Family, but that's an obsession for another time).

I also LOVE and ADORE retellings. I especially LOVE and ADORE retellings where good and bad are flipped. Wicked? Amazing musical, the book (and entire following series) are on my list.

So when I found Dorothy Must Die? It sounded like an absolute DREAM.

And then I started reading it, and that dream was shattered.

The concept had so much potential, but unfortunately the writing didn't live up to it. It was just absolutely terrible. The characters were the same types of cliches you'd find on a corny teen sitcom, and honestly not too likable. The repetitive descriptions grated on my every nerve.

But the worst part? I was surprised when I found out it was written by a grown woman. I would have sworn what I read of it was written by someone still in their Goth v. Prep stage. If teens even still have that stage. It feels so...90s.

I put it down after a few chapters. I literally lost the will to go on reading it.

It's now on my Sell list with a "Heck No" on the "Replace?" Column.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1505 comments Here's another vote for Anna Karenina. Many people who know say this is perhaps the best book ever written. But the characters were all so flawed and the writing itself was long winded. It does adapt well to a TV drama series though, I much preferred watching the BBC version than actually reading it.

As for contemporary romance novels I really hated Thoughtless that someone had also already mentioned. I couldn't stand the heroine or the premise of the story.

message 348: by Shorouq (new)

Shorouq Anna Karenina was the hardest book I tried to read. I was stuck in the first chapter for so long that I keep giving up on it. But once I finished Pride and Prejudice for the third time I thought of giving it another shot .. And that's when I got through chapter one but stuck on chapter three.
