message 1: by Geediez (new)

Geediez | 14 comments ...or someone else sees this. I'm browsing first ten pages of most popular quotes. And it makes me very, very, very angry that every second one of them is from S. Meyer's book. I mean - come on! - that book and it quotes are so... plain. Simple. There's absolutely no deeper thought in them and surely they're merely understandable by people who haven't read any of her works.

I wish there was some way to hide those Twitlight-and-the-rest quotes from public eye. Or - even better - make a distinction between truly great thoughts and aphorisms from parts of her books. Just look at those quotes:

"If I could dream at all it would be about you. And I'm not ashamed of it."

"'Do I dazzle you?'
'Frequently.'"

"Fall down again, Bella?'
'No, Emmett, I punched a werewolf in the face.'"

"I promise to love you forever--every single day of forever."

"I'm here . . . which roughly translated means I would rather die than stay away from you. I'm an idiot."

"So what you're saying is, I'm your brand of heroin?"
"You're exactly my brand of heroin."

--------
I can't help thinking that positioning those lines with the likes of Twain, Einstein, Wild is a total disgrace to them.

Eh. Some other books will be more popular in a few months.

message 3: by Maria (new)

Maria Elmvang (kiwiria) | 71 comments Geediez, as long as people are voting for them, hiding the quotes would be censorship, and I'd be VERY uncomfortable if GR started practising that. I agree with Rivka - Twilight is a fad. Eventually something new and more exciting will come along.

message 4: by Geediez (new)

Geediez | 14 comments Yeah, I realize that. The problem is that the next bestseller like those of Meyer or Rowling will be even more... you know.

message 5: by mlady_rebecca (new)

mlady_rebecca | 591 comments Yes, I'd almost like a way to scrape those super popular books off the top of the heap. So many people have read them that they show up everywhere. In quotes, all over listopia, in reviews. I wish I could say "ignore Twilight" and never see mention of that particular series again.

message 6: by Maria (new)

Maria Elmvang (kiwiria) | 71 comments mlady_rebecca, with that wording I totally agree ("I wish I could say..." - emphasis mine). If it's a personal option and not a site-wide option then I'd be all for it :)

But you'd still see all the girls on campus with Twilight gear. Oh, don't you go to my college?

Ubik | 87 comments Amen to everything said so far. Gawd, those quotes are so juvenile and horrible. Yikes

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree. I prefer the quotes by Plato, Socrates and Aristotle. The ones that actually mean something.

Nah. Give me Twain, Carroll, or Shaw any day!

Jessica | 963 comments Ben Franklin is my homeboy.

I need to add that one about being a reasonable creature..

Vicki | 18 comments rivka wrote: "Nah. Give me Twain, Carroll, or Shaw any day!"

I agree! However I would love to read quotes linked to a book in the area where I am looking at a book or see them on the authors page rather than in a list of quotes. That way the fans of a book can share their favorites with others that are interested in that book.

Quotes are listed are author pages.

message 14: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Moorhouse Yeah...I would love an "ignore" button on my tv, too. And something like Zaphod Beeblebrox's glasses that would make every copy of Twilight in the bookshop appear not to be there.

Sometimes the community is not so wonderful!

I don't mind seeing the books so much as all the other merchandise. I think a part of me died when I saw "Team Edward" underwear for sale in the bookstore!

[Note: I read and enjoyed Twilight, as pure fluff, ... but underwear, ugh!]

message 16: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Moorhouse Team Edward underwear?

No, on second thoughts, I Do Not Want To Know!

message 17: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn (seeford) | 573 comments Me either - ugh!
Now that's a cross-merchandising FAIL!

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 316 comments Probably Hot Topic...

message 20: by Doris (new)

Doris (yksdoris) | 2 comments Dorothy Parker's my girl :) and all the Anon's of the past. And some Russian dictators sometimes have rather "enlightening" ideas...

But yeah, not Twilight. I mean, I was conned into reading it and it's not nearly as horrible as the Da Vinci Code (mainly for the same reason the Wuthering Heights is -for me- better than Jane Eyre, namely that "the supernatural stuff" is SUPPOSED to be a part of the story, not just something to be used to fill plotholes).

So my point was, would it be possible to add a button for individual users that would, for example "ignore Stephanie Meyer", "ignore Oprah booklists" or "ignore "vampire""? where maybe the part to ignore can be filled in by the user, otherwise there'd me a monster list of ignore's to choose from, and most of it would eventually overlap...? or is that just wishful thinking?

Hanna (ohanners) | 2 comments Sorry, I don't know if I should be writing this in this discussion but,

Is it just me or are we not allowed to combine quotes anymore? I can't find the combine quotes button anywhere!

message 22: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
I see it on this page on the far right, fourth link from the top, under "add a quote". Do you not have that anymore?

I do see it...I guess the combine quote link only shows on the author's quotes page...My mistake for only looking at the search results

Thanks for clearing that up for me!

No problem. :)

The Insane Psychopath Jane Volturi (janewhitlockhale) Hmm... I can see why you would want this.

Now, I'm not just saying this because I love Twilight, but I personally think it's unfair. People are allowed to express there opinion (or atleast, where I live, in the US), and it's just something they should be allowed to do. Now, I know there are much more better quotes that could be used instead of things like "How strongly opposed are you to grand theft auto?", and other seeming hilarius quotes that could be used. But people love these quotes, and should be allowed to show it.

message 26: by Anony-miss (new)

Anony-miss a-non-y-miss | 2 comments I see why you brought this Geediez, and I totally agree with Kiwiria. Twilight has gotten pretty old and everyone seems to endlessly debate, argue, and create fan/hater clubs.

I'd love to rid of the quotes. I mean, if you were a fan, wouldn't you own the book already?

Yet again with Kiwiria -- starting censorship on GoodReads would be shameful to start.

message 27: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Moorhouse Nobody's stopping them. We're just expressing our opinions too.
