The author is best known for his homo-erotic art books and novels – but I first became aware of him though his non-fiction anthology The Secret Lives if Married Men – which I suppose is quite apt since this YA title deals with the complexity and fluidity of sexual identity and activity – mainly the hunky’n’horny bisexual love-object of the 16 year old gay main character. The story progresses through the eyes and perspective of several characters (gay, straight, male, female, youth and older). Some very salacious details get uncovered for both our model-material teenaged Hugo as well as his drop-dead gorgeous love object (old enough to be his father) Glenn Elliot Paul.
Personally, I find it a little hard to believe a 16 year old conducting himself in such a street-smart / savvy way … but then again, I don’t live South Beach, FA where maybe all the teens are just like that! The sexual content in higher and more descriptive in this title … quite steamy in fact for some of these passages.
It took me a little while to get into the flow of the novel …. but once past halfway – things moved along nicely.
