Ms Allende,
I'm Omar from Egypt and I'm a huge fan of your work. The characters you create, and the settings you use are always so memorable. I do notice however, that when books are translated from a foreign language into English, it loses its flow and magic and feels disjointed. Your translators however, do a great job. To what extent do you supervise the translation of your works from the original Spanish into English, and other languages? And would you ever consider writing in a language other than Spanish?
Would love to see your profile raised in the Arab speaking world, already all English bookstores carry your books, you should definitely see about getting more of your works translated!

Often real life has better stories than anything I could possibly imagine. I have a foundation to empower women and girls and I get to meet extraordinary people, each one with a fascinating story. For example, Olga Murray, a little old lady who has saved 12.000 girls from domestic bondage in Nepal, has founded orphanages and nutritional programs. Check her out: The Nepal Youth Foundation. I could not invent a character as endearing as Olga Murray.

I write in Spanish and I check the translation into English very thoroughly. Margaret Sayer Peden translated almost al my books, but she retired and could not work on Maya's Notebook. Anne McLean, who lives in Canada, did a wonderful job: she got Maya's voice immediately.

I believe in hard work and perseverance. I show up at my computer every day, many hours a day, without waiting for inspiration. Eventually "the flow" happens. If it doesn't happen I don't get discouraged because I know that tomorrow will be a better day.

I don't know if I have grown as a writer, but I have certainly changed since I wrote my first novel. Also the world and literary styles have changed. I have been living in English for 25 years and that has influenced my writing. I think that now I am more direct and my style is less baroque, cleaner and more precise.

I have a few questions regarding your first book "City of the Beasts". Will there be a movie? There has been talk about making this wonderful trilogy into a series of movies, but no further detail has been given. If you were to give consent to a movie, would you be involved in it (acting, producing, directing)? If the movie were to be made, would it be primarily in Spanish or English? Also, do you identify yourself with the main female character? Is she based off your adventurous and effervescent, yet elegant personality?

You're writing is by far the most captivating and amazing thing I've ever read. I am transported to another world. I've read Kingdom of the Golden Dragon, City of the Beasts, and Forest of the Pygmies. What I want to know more than anything is where you got the idea for Nadia's invisibility and anything you could tell me about that. Algo mas, gracias a tus editores alemanes por la idea de la recopilación. " Amor" es casi un manual, hay algunas instrucciones que valdrá la pena explorar.
?Como lograste despojarte de esa pesada carga de prejuicios, desafiar a la sociedad y la pacateria chilensis? Cual, según tu experiencia, seria el ingrediente que nos falta a las mujeres que aun arrastramos esa carga, para lograr la liberación y la verdadera identidad?

I wrote my first novel - and most of the others - without a script of any kind. I didn't know what would happen to the characters or the story, I wrote instinctively. I still write in the same way.

Hi Margitte. When I started my first book I didn't even know it was a novel and I had no hope that it would ever be published. I was just very, very lucky: The House of the Spirits became a success and that paved the way for all my other books.
I feel the emotions of my characters, I cry and laugh and suffer when I write. There's no balance. Sometimes I get sick with worry, like with Island Beneath the Sea. The theme of slavery was so horrible!

Cuando escribí mi primer libro ni siquiera sabía que era una novela y no tenía la menor esperanza de que sería publicado. Tuve mucha, mucha suerte: La Casa de los Espíritus tuvo éxito y eso pavimentó el camino para el resto de mis libros.
No tengo equilibrio en el plano emocional, vivo en carne propia los sentimientos de mis personajes. Río, lloro, sufro con ellos. A veces me enfermo, como me ocurrió con La Isla Bajo el Mar. El tema de la esclavitud es tan horrible...

Dear Johanna
I start my book with a first sentence that comes from the womb, not the brain. I try to write that sentence without thinking. It is like magic: it opens the door to a dark space where the story is waiting for me. I have no idea where the story will lead me but I try to follow some kind of chronological order. The characters are fictional, but often I am inspired by someone I know. Sometimes I look for someone who can serve as a model for a character, like Manuel Arias in Maya's Notebook. He is a friend of mine.

Comienzo mis libros con una primera frase que brota del vientre, no de la mente. Es como magia: esa frase abre la puerta a un espacio oscuro donde la historia me espera. No sé qué dirección tomará la historia, pero trato de seguir un cierto orden cronológico. Los personajes son ficticios, pero a menudo se inspiran en alguien que conozco. A veces busco a la persona que puede inspirar el personaje. Por ejemplo, Manuel Arias en El Cuaderno de Maya es un amigo mío.

No puedo contestar todo lo que me preguntas, perdona.
He recibido mil veces la pregunta sobre el cuento Dos Palabras, los lectores quieren saber cuáles eran esas poderosas palabras, pero no puedo responder, porque ni yo misma las conozco. Depende de cada persona. Para algunos pueden ser palabras de amor, para otros un encantamiento o simplemente un nombre... Creo que el misterio hace el cuento mucho más atractivo. Si supiéramos las palabras, perdería su magia.

I am often asked what were the powerful words in the story Two Words, but I can't answer because I don't know. They depend on each reader. For some they could be words of love, for others a spell or simply a name. I think the mystery makes the story more interesting. If we knew the words, it would lose it's magic.

Thanks for reading Maya's Notebook. My advice for aspiring writers is to write every single day a page or two. Writing is like training for sports. How are you going to compete in the game if your don't train? Same with writing. Inspiration for stories is everywhere but the only way to translate it to paper is sitting down many hours a day and write, write, write.

I read one of your books when I was very young (younger than my actual young status), and it caught me in a bad period. It sounds cliche, and it probably is, but your book was a safety haven for me. The book I read was "La Ciudad de las Bestias".
It took me away from my personal hell, and transported me into a great story, great characters, and great environment. Just like Alex.
I read more of you, but I always go back and read the book that, I like to think, saved me from a handful of mistakes.

Hi Jenny. Rose was my grand aunt. She died poisoned under mysterious circumstances. There was a sepia photograph of her in our house and everybody said she looked like a mermaid. I imagined that mermaids have green hair, so why not have a character with green hair in the book?

My name is Amber. I studied Spanish in college and enjoyed reading your books Portrait in Sepia and Daughter of Fortune. I plan to read more of your books in the future. I was surprised reading all of the side stories and history of the minor characters and although they appeared to be on the other side of the world, you find an interesting way to show the how the character relates to the main character. La lectura ha sido primordial en mi día a día, así como escribir, pero no llevo un diario ¿me recomendaría iniciar a llevar un diario? ¿Qué consejo me podría dar para mejorar mis escritos?

Espero pronto nos visite en México, y pronto, ¿tiene alguna fecha tentativa?, sería algo increíble. Usted es mi escritora favorita....

Hola Isabel, soy de México y quiero que sepas que me gusta mucho la forma que tienes de escribir y como desde que leí "la casa de los espíritus", lo considero como uno de mis libros favoritos, y con el nuevo libro me hiciste transportarme junto con Maya, mi pregunta es sobre su abuela ya que quisiera saber que tanto tiene de ti en ella? Y mi otra pregunta es sobre la serie del águila y el jaguar(la ciudad de las bestias...) quisiera saber si tienes pensado escribir algo mas sobre ellos?

Hola Isabel, son tu mejor admiradora creeme!!!te tengo una pregunta,yo soy de Guatemala refugiada en USA desde hace mucho tiempo asi como tu, esta patria bella me adopto y yo a ella, (llevo aun en mi corazon a mi bella Guatemala) aunque siendo victima de la represion y la guerra me vine para aca, dejame te pregunto, 1.Siempre leo todos tus libro una y otra vez, yo siento que en este libro,Retrato en Sepia, algo cambio en ti,siento que por alguna razon te viste limitada a seguir con la historia, no significa que estuviera mala,la narracion en algun momento se torno muy tecnica,rebuscada, y porque te conozco me atrevo a preguntarte, esque acaso te paso algo al medio de escribir este libro?? esque algo personal te distrajo?
2.pregunta alguna vez visitaste la iglesia de San Patricio en la ciudad de New York? en los anios 2005,06 o 07? esque creo que te vi!!, un abrazo amiga del tiempo! (porque creo que en una vida pasada fuimos muy amigas)
