First off, I love your work. Now to the question. you are one of the few authors who have managed to pen extremely strong female characters ( independent even in their sexual choices) consistently. In fact, i have never come across a weak female character in your novels. Who inspires these characters? Are they all from your life. If so, haven't you encountered any weak characters that you wanted to pen? I am an Indian. And I refuse to believe that Latin American women are essentially stronger than Indian women. So I expect that the number of strong characters you encounter will be the same as the number I am likely to encounter in Mumbai. And yet I cannot reconcile myself to the sheer number of strong women in your works.

I just want to say although I wasn't able to read your books in their native language and only read the translated ones; either to English or Arabic but your images, your thoughts and work of art reached me so vividly. Hello from Costa Rica! I want you to know how important your writing has been to me personally. The first book of yours I read was "House of Spirits". It helped me transform my anger and despair over the violence in Central America of the 1980's that was drawing me down and to rediscover a spirit of love and forgiveness. Since then I have read several other of your books and have been inspired and entertained by each.

Now, I am deferring to the 11-12th grade Spanish class of the Monteverde Friends School (a bilingual Quaker school in Costa Rica) to give them a chance to ask you questions. So here is what they would like to ask you:

Hola Isabel, mi nombre es Sandra, soy venezolana. Desde que escribías en "El Nacional" me gustó ese estilo fresco, salpicado de humor e ingenio, hasta recortaba los artículos para releerlos. Leí "La casa de los Espíritus" cinco veces, fue una relación odio-amor con él y al final quedé encantada, por esa esencia latinoamericana que tan bien expresas y con la que es inevitable sentirse identificada. Por supuesto, para nada me gustó la versión cinematográfica porque me parece que simplificaron demasiado y realizaron muchos cortes de carnicero, pero bueno, quizá los mexicanos o los franceses hubiesen entendido y expresado mejor el asunto del realismo mágico. Anyway, solo una pequeño aporte para cuando vendas de nuevo los derechos de autor de algunas de tus obras ;)
Con Paula me identifiqué muchísimo,porque de algún modo estoy sufriendo una pérdida, la historia de tu ángel me pareció conmovedora y genial, me encanta tu narrativa. Ojalá yo logre desarrollar algún día un estilo tan atrayente como el tuyo, me gustaría escribir la historia de mi hermana, que de algún modo está muerta en vida debido a su condición (fue diagnosticada con esquizofrenia hace 20 años y se rehúsa a medicarse desde hace 3), pero su viaje ha sido profundo, dramático, intenso y triste, me gustaría que la gente viese detrás de las apariencias su esencia, para aumentar la empatía hacia los "pacientes" como ella. Aunque por ahora solo tengo fragmentos escritos en "libros de anotar la vida" como lo hiciera tu Clara Trueba.

One of the things that I love most about your writing is that there are no unneccessary words. It seems that every word that you use is picked with utmost care, which would seem to require a lot of rewriting. After you "finish" writing the story how much time do you spend with rewriting or is this just a style that comes naturally to you? Soy Diana. Te conocí hoy en Chicago después de años de esperarlo. Me levanté a las 4am y tomé una avionetita desde donde vivo en un pueblito de Iowa hasta Chicago. Luego tomé el tren desde el aeropuerto y de regreso sólo para poder verte hoy!!! Sí que ha valido la pena, sino fuera por la emoción tan grande que me dio el verte. Siempre tenía miedo de que te despidieras de este mundo sin yo haberte podido dar las gracias. En todo el nerviosismo de conocerte por lo menos eso si te pude decir.
Mi pregunta es más un poco personal. Para mí como mujer joven es importante tener un tiempo íntimo compartiendo con otras mujeres. Ellas son mi clan. Con ellas no hay secretos. Y ese tiempo es importante para mi, casi sagrado. A veces tenemos una ceremonias y les llamamos 'bruja' meetings. Tienes de alguna manera tu ese tiempo con mujeres? tienes/tuviste ese grupo íntimo?? Le inculcas a tus nietas la importancia de reunirse con otras mujeres de diferentes generaciones para intercambiar experiencias que cada una tiene para ofrecer???

Hola Isabel, I am always transported by your books. Your ability to make the characters live for me is what I enjoy so much.
I have to say that when I read your book "Paula" I was surprised that you were writing about porphyria. I have AIP and was in a coma also for 3 months. After I came around it took about 1 year to re-learn to write, to walk, slowly building up my strength and now have little residual from that attack. My family kept vigil and brought me through after I was off life support, caring for my trach and personal needs. But the pain they suffered watching and waiting came full circle through your experience with your precious daughter. One thing I will tell you is that for 3 months of coma I felt no PAIN, I knew nothing about what was happening to my body. Maybe that helps you. Being from scottish heritage and with hindsight apparently my paternal Grandmother died from AIP. I will read and re-read your books, I buy them for gifts because I hold all of mine close, not wanting to lose any of them. My mother named me Delores, Ruth Delores, she called me Delores. Bueno creo que solo puedo expresar lo mucho que has influenciado mi vida; he leído tus libros desde que tenia 13 años, mi mamá me regalo "La ciudad de Las bestias" por mi cumpleaños, desde entonces seguí leyendo todos los que pude conseguir. Siempre he encontrado en tus libros historias tal y como me gustan, tu humor es una de las mejores cosas de ellos.
Cada uno de tus libros me hace de alguna manera sentir empatía por alguno de los personajes, especialmente con este ultimo por que en algún momento de mi vida sentí que me estaba ahogando, y no quería que me rescataran por que simplemente no sentía que lo mereciera, y también gracias a una Mujer como la abuela de Maya pude mejorar y trato de hacerlo aun. Gracias por las historias que llenaron de sueños mi adolescencia y siguen emocionándome, por cierto, mi bebé esta disfrutando de "La Ciudad de Las Bestias" como su historia antes de ir a dormir.

Los personajes tienen vida propia. Al principio los imagino, pero el libro no echa a andar hasta que los personajes me sorprenden y la historia se desenvuelve sola, como si me la estuvieran dictando. Si trato de forzar a los personajes en cierta dirección, no resulta. Para responder tu pregunta: es una combinación de imaginación, investigación, trabajo (ya que debo pasar muchas horas escribiendo) y simple buena suerte.

Hi Sofia. The female characters in my books are usually modeled after someone I have known or some historical character that fascinates me. The truth is that I don't know any weak women. Through my foundation I get to meet formidable women that inspire me.

Hi Iris. I write many hours a day, six days a week, for months and months. Being alone and in silence allows me to enter into the universe of the novel, live the lives of the characters, be part of the story. It makes me very happy when the readers get lost in the story as I do!

Hola Valeria. La inspiración para Maya fueron mis nietos, que eran todos adolescentes cuando escribí la novela. El golpe militar de Chile en 1973 me obligó a salir de mi país y refugiarme en Venezuela. Creo que por eso el abuso de poder y la violencia son temas que siempre aparecen en mis libros.

Hi Valeria. The inspiration for Maya were my grandchildren. They were all teenagers when I wrote the novel. The military coup in Chile in 1973 forced me to leave my country and find refuge in Venezuela. Maybe that's why the themes of abuse of power and violence are so prevalent in my books.

Hi Lea. Thanks for reading my books. I loved writing a trilogy for young adults and Zorro, but I prefer to write for adults, it gives me more freedom. Maya's Notebook is not specifically for young adults, but I think that given that it is the story of a teenager in trouble, it will interest young readers.

Cierto, Eva Luna contiene mucho de la historia y la atmósfera de Venezuela, donde escribí esa novela. Los lugares me sirven de inspiración. Desde que vivo en los Estados Unidos he escrito varias novelas situadas en este país, como Hija de la Fortuna, El Plan Infinito, la Isla bajo el Mar y más recientemente El Cuaderno de Maya.

True: Eva Luna has much of the history and the atmosphere of Venezuela, where I wrote that novel, Places inspire me. Since I have been living in the States I have written several books placed in this country, like Daughter of Fortune, The Infinite Plan, The Island Beneath the Sea and most recently Maya's Notebook.

Hola Daniela. Cuando escribo trato meterme en la piel del personaje, convertirme en el personaje, verlo desde adentro en todas sus dimensiones, con sus fallas y virtudes. Siempre me ayuda tener alguien como modelo. En el caso de Maya, los modelos fueron mis nietos y sus amigos, todos eran adolescentes cuando escribí el libro.

Hi Daniela. When I write I try to get under the skin of each character, become the character, see him or her in all its dimensions, virtues and defects. It always helps to have a model. In Maya's case my grandchildren and their, all teenagers at the time, were the models that inspired me.

Hi Lisa. I am glad you liked my trilogy for young adults. It was fun to write those books. I learned that one should never underestimate a kid's intellect. Young people today are very well informed and they demand respect. Maybe you would enjoy my book about Zorro.

I don't really choose the themes of my books. My stories are born inside my belly, like pregnancies. I have written about homosexuality in several of my books, including in my family memoir The Sum of our Days.

Hi Lavi. Sorry, I can only answer one of your questions because have hundreds of messages.
I do a lot of research for historical novels. If the time and the place are accurate, the fictional characters and the story are believable. The trick is to incorporate the historical facts without being didactic, boring or pedantic.

Hago mucha investigación para las novelas históricas. Si el tiempo y el lugar son exactos, los personajes ficticios y la novela son creíbles. El truco consiste en incorporar los datos históricos sin ser didáctica, aburrida o pedante.

My name is Jasmine and I am a fan of your work. My mother Luz is an avid reader of your books. I am grateful for the opportunity to ask you a question. I have a few questions for you.

Are all of your books partly autobiographical? Do you think that, in general, every author's work is going to be semi-autobiographical and if so, does this make it less of a work of fiction? This is one of my biggest concerns at the moment, since I am working on an outline for a novel. Also, do you write on paper or on a computer? Do you think that this makes a difference in the quality of your work?
