Hola Isabel!! Mi nombre real no es Yami, es Gloria, soy chilena y soy una fiel admiradora de su trabajo, fuiste una de las escritoras que despertó mi gusto por la lectura. Actualmente tengo 16 años, pero cuando tenía 12 mi madre me obsequió "La ciudad de las Bestias" y luego lloré hasta que obtuve "El reino del dragón de oro" y "el bosque de los pigmeos". Aunque me gusta la lectura, siempre ha sido un problema comprar libros, como ya sabes, aquí en Chile son muy costosos y mis padres son divorciados, por lo que no recibo mucho dinero y la vida me ha costado más, sin embargo siempre que tengo un poco de dinero extra, tus novelas son prioridad de compra, me acompañan mucho, debido al estado civil de mis padres muchas veces ando viajando de un lado a otro y nada mejor que la lectura para pasar el rato. Me encanta tu estilo, tu narración y como encuentro la historia de Chile dentro de tus novelas. En el caso del cuaderno de Maya, reflejaste muchos temores personales, creo que muchas veces estuve al borde de ser como Maya por la situación de mis padres, y a veces temo por que mi hermano caiga, pero no todo es negro, al final Maya sí se pudo rehabilitar, y eso se trasmite. Fue divertido, en cada hoja siempre pensaba: ¡Oh, Maya! ¿Qué vas a hacer ahora?.
Quiero agradecer por esta oportunidad que le diste a todos tus lectores, sé que tendrás mucho que responder, pero no perderé mi oportunidad de preguntar: ¿son reales esos rumores que dicen que estas escribiendo una nueva novela? ¿Cuándo podré verla en las librerías? ¿Me obsequiarías un ejemplar autografiado? (jajaj I Was Just Kidding).
Admiro mucho tu trabajo, no sé si es la investigación que haces, la riqueza de las descripciones, lo "vivo" de lo personajes o la excelente narración lo que hace que todo sea tan realista y fantástico.

Your novels have changed my life. I find that the characters in your books strike a chord with the path that my life has taken so far. I was born in Spain, in a farm lost in a small pueblo. The first ten years of my life I spent living in a rural context, before migrating with my family to the USA. The transition between generations and countries has left a mark in who I am. Reading your books has been like rediscovering those experiences that had shaped me as a young man in between a traditional spanish family and a lifestyle far detached from where I was born. I wanted to ask you the following question, I hope that it is not too intimate: How did you feel when you first arrived to the USA? Would you say that you have assimilated the culture shift from Chile to the USA after all these years? In what ways do you consider that such a shift is present in your novels?

Qué curiosa sensación--te he leído tanto que te siento muy cercana, casi como parte de mi familia, y sin embargo tú no tienes ni idea de quién soy :) Eso de revelar el alma en tus libros y enviarla hacia las multitudes sin cara y, hasta hace muy poco, sin voz, debe ser una experiencia desordenante. Esa es mi primera pregunta: ¿cómo manejas ese despojo de tu intimidad hacia el público? Has escrito libros sumamente íntimos; Paula, sobre todo, pero también La Suma de los Días. Es catártico, imagino, y también... ¿desgastante?

En La Suma de los Días hablas de tu proceso creativo, cosa que te agradezco enormemente. ¿Tienes planes de escribir más acerca de ese proceso? ¿Algo por el estilo del Writing de Marguerite Duras, o On Writing de Stephen King? Como escritora me encantaría tener una colección de tus pensamientos sobre esta carrera que no escogemos sino que nos escoge.

I'm in Atlanta and have been a fan every since I read "House of the Spirits" back in the 90's - I have read 8 more of your books since, and try to read at least one a year - that way I can stretch out the enjoyment a little longer! Unfortunately I have jury duty May 8th and won't be able to join the discussion -many others have posted questions I also am interested in, so I won't add another one. But I would like to comment on the translations - I believe you write in Spanish, a language I don't know well enough to read, but in light of the lovely language of the translations by Margaret Sayers Peden, I can only imagine what a delight the original writing must be! I greatly admire your eloquent style, your dry wit, the strong and loving portrayals that make your characters come alive, and your willingness to open your heart and life to your readers in those works that are more autobiographical in nature (Paula, Sum of my Days). Thank you. And I wish to extend my thanks to Ms. Peden for her wonderful translations that make your books live and breathe in English. If it weren't for her, I wouldn't know what a wonderful writer and storyteller you are.

My question: how closely do you work with the translators of your books? It must be hard to hand over your work to someone whose language you don't know.

2. He tenido la oportunidad de leer “Dos palabras” varias veces y siempre que termino de leerla tengo la misma duda. Aunque siempre he tenido la oportunidad de discutir cuales son las dos palabras que Belisa le da al coronel, siempre he querido saber ¿Para ti, cuáles son estas dos palabras y por qué las escogiste?

3. ¿En qué persona(s) y en qué cultura(s) te inspiraste para escribir el cuento “Dos palabras”?

4.¿Qué fue lo que te motivó o te inspiró a escribir la casa de los espíritus?

5. Esteban, en la casa de los espíritus es un personaje muy complejo y poco común, ¿cómo llegaste a crear a Esteban?

6. Ya que tú eres una figura muy importante para la literatura femenina, que les dirías a esas mujeres de hoy en día que no han podido recibir una educación o no han podido salir a cumplir su sueños porque están dominadas por un esposo o un papá.

7. Ya que tú has vivido en varios países de Latinoamérica, ¿qué significa Latinoamérica para ti?

8. Tu familia ha estado muy pegada a la política y tú la viviste mucho a través de tu infancia. También has visto a Chile crecer de una forma muy drástica pero con mucho esfuerzo. ¿Qué nos dirías a todos los venezolanos que todavía estamos luchando por una mejor Venezuela aunque cada día se hace más difícil?

Quisiera saber que libros recomendarías para leer, tuyos o ajenos y porque, ya que me ha servido en el pasado conocer las recomendaciones de buenos escritores respecto a qué leer.
