Recientemente leímos en nuestro círculo de lectura de Biblioteca del Tec de Monterrey Campus Sinaloa en Culiacán, México tu novela el Cuaderno de Maya. Fue un libro sugerido por una maestra y los chicos de preparatoria y profesional que participaron tuvieron comentarios enriquecedores desde su perspectiva adolescente. En especial, me gustó mucho el perfil que dibujas de los personajes y los elementos culturales norteamericanos vs Latinoamérica. Mi pregunta es: ¿qué estrategias utilizas para desarrollar cada personaje sin que tu propia historia se entreteja entre ellos? O acaso, ¿si existe un pedacito tuyo o de tu familia cercana en ellos? Me gusta escribir pero al desarrollar las historias me cuesta trabajo desprenderme de mis propias experiencias ¿es esto malo en un escritor o,por el contrario, una ventaja?

Hola Isabel. Soy Lisette Arévalo de Quito, Ecuador. Siempre quise ser una escritora dese pequeña y deje que ese sueño se opacara conforme pasaba el tiempo. Leí hace poco tu libro La Casa de los Eaporitua otra vez, y recordé por un segundo porque quería escribir novelas. Es por esa manera única que los autores transfieren una parte de su ser a sus lectores. Gracias por haber escrito este libro y hacerme acuerdo de la belleza de la literatura femenina. Uno de los libros que me han cautivado más ha sido La Isla Bajo el Mar. Aquello que lleno mis días fueron las pasiones de los personajes, las apaciguadas y las arrancadas del alma de cada uno. Por lo que me pregunto como es que llega a darla la vida a personajes tan completos y tan centrados en una realidad histórica que seguro la conoció a través de la lectura, cuentos y/o cintas de vídeo. He escuchado la platica que dio en TED por lo que intuyo que las pasiones humanas, sobretodo las femeninas es algo que no ha cambiado, entonces mi pregunta se dirige más a: de qué manera vincula una verdad con otra.

Sólo felicitaciones de mi parte.
¿Nunca ha planeado escribir o adaptar alguno de sus libros para una miniserie de tv? (Lógicamente he visto las películas que se han hecho de sus libros y no le hacen justicia, y claramente entiendo sus sueños con Antonio Banderas flotando en arroz con leche :)

You are my favourite author. I absolutely adore your stories, their soul, the adventure, romance and, most of all, your female characters. Strong, independent, profound and brave. They are an inspiration to me and should be to women everywhere. It is refreshing to dwell in your magical world, a world to which I always return with love and joy in my heart. "Ines of My Soul", "The House of the Spirits" and "Island Beneath the Sea" are my favourites, but each and every one of your books are spectacular and sublime. Ines really got to me because of her strength and ambition, her potency as a leading lady and her soul, and the relationship between Etienne Relais and Violette will always be right at the top of my favourite literary loves. So many tears were shed over those two...
I share the love for your work with my best friend who first introduced me to Ines. We learned so much from your books, we visited far-away lands that we had never encountered before.

Hola, Isabel! My name is Diana and I'm from Romania. I'd write this in Spanish, but I'm not that good at it, so I'll stick to English. I just wanted to say that you're absolutely my favorite author in the world, and that the world you create in your books is so special and magical, I want to live in them! Not to mention that after reading so much about Chile, I now need to go visit it. I have read nearly all your books (some of them in Romanian, some in English) and I own most of them (not all, sadly, because books are expensive here, but someday). I'd pick favorites, but it's hard. If I had to choose, it would probably be "The Stories of Eva Luna", the book that made me fall in love with your writing at 13 years old and "Portrait in Sepia", which I felt was so special. Oh, and Zorro! I'm currently reading "La Isla Bajo el Mar", in Spanish. It's the first book I read in Spanish and I adore it, it's a completely different experience. It takes more concentration, but it is absolutely worth it. Now I'm saving up to go buy "El Cuaderno de Maya" in Spanish and I can't wait to read it.

Hola Isabel, desde el punto de vista de las ventas tu obra ha resultado un gran éxito, pero por alguna razón la crítica no tiende a equiparar la cantidad de lectores con la calidad de la escritura. Soy licenciada en literatura inglesa y hay novelas consideradas obras maestras que me han resultado "un ladrillo", no puedo con Ulises, por ejemplo... pero he devorado la saga de Harry Potter que creo que ya es un clásico de pleno derecho. Dónde te parece que se encuentra el equilibrio perfecto que hace una novela atractiva al público en general pero manteniendo un valor literario obvio para los lectores más exigentes.
Igual que las comedias no ganan oscars, los bestsellers no se aprecian igual, qué piensas de los nuevos fenómenos literarios como Twilight, 50 shades, Harry Potter? es posible que aun hoy en dia ser escritora con a al final te coloque automáticamente a la cola en la estima de la crítica? Mil gracias y sigue siendo tú, digan lo que digan los críticos.

Isabel, le cuento que es un honor saludarle de nuevo. Nos encontramos en 2008 cuando Ud. fue una de las mujeres destacadas en el Centro de Omega en Nueva York para su “Mujeres y Coraje” conferencia. Tuve miedo poner mis propias experiencias al papel, pero sus palabras me darán el valor hacerlo. Hoy soy poeta con algunas publicaciones, trabajando en mi primer novela. I am so glad to have read your books. Each of them rewarding in its own way. Having read 'House of Spirits' at 13 years old, I barely understood what it meant. However reading it again was totally rewarding as I had 3 years of maturing to understand and discover the truthfulness of the book. Latest I have read 'La Luna' which proved to be impactful and haunting. What I mean is that I found individual stories so haunting, beautiful and relevant. And I treasure the connections I make from the characters and story with reality. I am mostly haunted by the fact that Luna has beautiful stories of Love that is found and lost, yet her lover is neither. Thank you for all your beautiful stories.

Mi pregunta es sobre la relación entre Eliza Sommers y Tao Chi'en en Hija de la fortuna y Retrato en sepia. Ya he leído en otras obras la descripción de una transformación feminista de una mujer, pero lo singular, en este aspecto, de La Hija de la fortuna y Retrato en sepia, es la descripción de la transformación feminista no sólo de Eliza Sommers sino también de Tao Chi'en. Además, es la unión de estas dos transformaciones individuales que nos permite observar la relación entre ellos dos, que yo también llamaría de feminista/progresista y que se opone a la presentación romántica tradicional de la relación amorosa que es fácil ver en todas partes.

Me gustaría que usted hablara un poco sobre como usted llegó a entender que una relación podría ser de esta forma, y además, qué exactamente, cree usted, que nos puede enseñar la relación de Eliza Sommers y Tao Chi'en sobre el amor?

Y ahora, las gracias. He pasado el último año leyendo exclusivamente obras de ficción escritas por mujeres. Esto ha sido parte de una transformación feminista que estoy viviendo, y sus libros han contribuido enormemente a este proceso.
