Ions I seem to struggle finding a new book to start, and care about...I posted earlier about the Bernard Cornwall series which I picked up on a whim, and really enjoyed.

earlier this week I tried to find a new book to check out, tried a Sanderson book, tried to start the second Night Angel book by Brent Weeks...neither of them hooked me.

so on a whim I started the Warded Man (the Painted Man)...and for whatever reason, my brain decided THIS was the one.

There isn't much to complain about with this book. its incredibly well put together even though the narrative cycles through 3 different stories (till, SPOILER, they meet up [its not inobvious that this will happen])
some times it does feel that a character seems to be getting more screen time, but honestly it evens out quite well!

the magic system in this world is fascinating, but not described in depth (almost done with book 1... so, I have no doubt this will get fleshed out). the characters are interesting and strong in their own rights, and don't have an identical background in the slightest.

I'll admit I'm a sucker for bad ass heroes (Kvothe, Guts, Corwin, Wolverine, aang...) and this book certainly delivers one awesome badass!

hrm. that's about all I want to say now... as I progress through the remaining two books I'll return to put in some cents
:-)

Colin | 23 comments if you like badass heroes have you tried Mark Lawrence Broken Empire series or Joe Abercrombie?

message 3: by Ions (new)

Ions I'll list them under To-Read! thanks!

Ions So far, the second book is quite a chore to get through. it's not lacking in any detail, story, or character building... it just takes place in the worlds "middle east".
I have zero point of reference to Whats going on, and I'm left feeling kinda lost, like I'm just catching bits here and there from what I "know" of middle east culture...

near the end of book 1 they went into some detail about the specifics of the worlds magic, and it was pretty refreshing.

Have no fear. It doesn't last the whole book and things get fun in the same way the first book was again fairly quick.

As for bad ass heroes, I don't know if I would call anyone in Abercrombies books a "hero", but definitely enough badass to go around.

Also, not sure what you didn't like about the Night Angel books... might need to just power through the part that's bogging you down.

message 6: by Ions (new)

Ions true, I kinda miss used "heroes". I tend to gravitate towards anti-heroes, but at the same time, they are working against a truly evil faction. Guts, is far from heroic by traditional standards...as his kill-count exceeds 1000 humans, and hundreds of pseudo-gods...but he fights against a great evil [I refer to the manga, Berserk. if any of you are keen to check it out, HOLY SHIT! its amazing! but be forewarned, to say "its brutal and fucked up" is almost an understatement.]

I enjoy someone who is gifted a great power, and struggles to control it... or just uses it in order to achieve a greater purpose...

in regards to Night Angel... for whatever reason I just didn't enjoy book1...and I'm carrying that prejudice to book 2...granted its unfair, but its hard to combat...

I felt the second book came together quite well by the end.

However, the third book? *grimaces* I don't want to ruin your enjoyment but if I lower your expectations you may enjoy it more! It sucked :)

Xandra Black | 26 comments I enjoyed the demon cycle series, warded man etc. And I liked Night Angel as well. some books resonate more than others. Some characters do as well. with everything I read, some things strike me as very well done, other things not so much. Some series I end up re-reading a lot, because I'm just in that mood. One series I love is by Kristine Smith, it's 5 books, it's scifi. I also enjoy Ilona Andrew's Kate Daniels series which is more paranormal / UF. I enjoy the Cast series by Michelle Sagara as well. I read across genres. Some things resonate, other's don't. I go with the flow. Gillian Flynn has written some of the best character studies I've ever encountered. Her work is very dark. Right now I'm reading Dune again. even with books that suck there can be hidden treasures. I hate rating books with stars. and I don't do many reviews. peace, xx

Ions thanks xandra!

Chris, what sucks about book 3 [without spoiling, lol]

Um, it's one of those things that if I say it will totally ruin your enjoyment...

But...this --> "Honest Word". Renna.

Ions lol.

I'm about 9 hours into the audiobook for book 3...

its odd that other authors can create incredibly detailed worlds without using flashbacks. this guy LOVES the flashback

message 12: by Xandra (new)

Xandra Black | 26 comments I didn't mind the flashbacks. Mainly because they gave so much depth to the characters. We end up with coming of age stories for the majority of the characters. Once you finish the 3rd book, I have something to say. So let me know, and I'll share a bit of a joke my younger brother & I have about the book. The goodreads app sux. It's limiting. Regardless, I'll post the joke when you're done.

message 15: by Ions (new)

Ions lol, I have about ten hours left. they just had the big Noon Moon battle at Hollows.

more and more, I think this book really should have been a comic, not a novel...

message 16: by Ions (new)

Ions not book, series rather

message 17: by Xandra (new)

Xandra Black | 26 comments which book are you reading? book 3, yes? the most recent?

message 18: by Ions (new)

Ions and I've finished it!

it IS a good series, I got pretty burnt out on it near the end of book two, and should have taken a break, listen to some Pratchett to cleanse the pallet, ya know.

the final book ends with a pretty decent cliff-hanger... that would have been more effective if I wasn't eagerly looking forward to the books end.

Jason (Martouff) | 2 comments Warded Man is one of my favorite books ever.

I hated Desert Spear with a passion though. I wanted to throw the book out of my car window on the highway into oncoming traffic. As much as I loved WM, I vow not to even continue the series; I was that pissed.
