• Nod by Adrian Barnes (Bluemoose Books)
• Dark Eden by Chris Beckett (Corvus)
• Angelmaker by Nick Harkaway (Windmill Books)
• The Dog Stars by Peter Heller (Headline)
• Intrusion by Ken MacLeod (Orbit)
• 2312 by Kim Stanley Robinson (Orbit)

I know this was in the podcast but I thought the list would be handy.

Rick The Dog Stars looks interesting. Not sure it's genre aside from the setting, but it sounds like a great book. Bit disturbed by/tired of the emphasis on dystopias (Nod, Dark Eden, Intrusion, Dog Stars), but I don't know what was longlisted.

Kevin | 701 comments I'm used to not reading a lot of books that end up on award lists, but here I haven't even heard of any of them except 2312 ...

Tamahome | 7230 comments I don't think the Ken MacLeod is even published in America yet.

Warren | 1556 comments Apparently the major publishers were not happy with the nominees. Many of the authors are virtually unknowns. Few of the can be found in Walmart. What the industrty coming to?

On the other hand I like to hear the phrase,
"Here's someone you might like"

Ditto.

Kathryn Weis | 126 comments 2312 was rough to start. And way too long. And I like long books. Most of the time I find myself at the end of a book wishing there was more, wanting to see more of those characters, wanting MORE. At the end of 2312 it was more like, "thank god that's over... now I can more on to other things I want to read." It was interesting, and had a nifty plot line but there was waaaaaay too much fluff. Robinson could have cut out at least 100 pages (Probably closer to 200).

I agree. If it isn`t sold at Walmart it`s hardly worth buying. Why read any of these silly obscure books when you could be reading Chicken Soup for the X Soul or the groundbreaking Kardashian Konfidential. ;)

Tamahome | 7230 comments At least this award is a jury. It's less of a 'popular vote' like some other awards.

Is there such a thing? It is like saying "my sarcasm is too thick"...
