Do I have to read the The Mortal Instruments series first before reading this trilogy?

No. But you could if you want to read them they way they came out. But you don't have too, to understand the trilogy.
I am reading first this series. You know, if you don't like it, it is a smaller series than the Mortal Instrument.
you dont need to but certain things will make more sense if you read TID before TMI. i read them backwards because i discovered TMI first, but it isnt really a big deal which you read first.
i agree with the others that while you don't have to read the mortal instruments, it helps since you already have a sense of who some of the characters are. but...given that the series is such a long one, don't feel like you have to put yourself out to enjoy the trilogy.

Well I'm already starting the Mortal Instruments series so I guess it wont hurt to finish that series first then start The Infernal Devices trilogy
