Louise | 279 comments Hi all, my brother-in law (age 60) just lost his job, and I want to send him some books to cheer him up. He likes reading true stories about explorers who travel acroos the Antarctic/Sahara and stuff like that - any recommendations?

Janet | 5 comments If you're looking for fiction mixed with a bit of supernatural, The Terror by Dan Simmons is set on an arctic exploration.

My father also enjoyed the Aubrey-Maturin series by Patrick O'Brien, which are the books Master and Commander were based on.

Virginia Aubrey-Maturin series: IMO the best historical fiction ever written
For the brother-in-law: Endurance (about Shackleton expedition)
The Worst Journey in the World by Cherry-Garrard (might have that name spelled wrong) - about part of Scott's expedition that split off to go watch the wintertime penguin rookeries - just amazing
A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson - true and also very funny account of hiking the Appalachian trail
Endurance Shackleton's Incredible Voyage by Alfred Lansing
The Worst Journey in the World by Apsley Cherry-Garrard
A Walk in the Woods Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson

Nancy F. | 24 comments I don't know if this would be appropriate and it's not the genre you requested, but you may want to consider recommending How Starbucks Saved My Life A Son of Privilege Learns to Live Like Everyone Else by Michael Gates Gill ..How Starbucks Saved My Life by Michael Gates Gill. Although some people hated this book, I really liked it. It is about a man of privilege that lost his job, his marriage, and his health and how getting a job at Starbucks saved him.
