I read that it may have been rickets or tuberculosis, or a combination of the two. Here's an interesting article about it :)

I was thinking Polio or CP like the article mentioned or even Guillian - Barre' syndrome. TB and Rickets makes a lot sense though considering the time and place. It is common for authors to take inspiration from their surroundings, like from neighbors or family.

Kim I've read that it may have been Rickets or renal tubular acidosis-all I know about that one is it's a kidney disease, or tuberculosis.
