Did you find it worth reading or Just NAMESAKE

According to me the title justifies the Novel content, I read it because I liked Interpreter of Maladies. But i didn't find it worth reading. It was nothing like in that book but just Namesake.

It was a moving book that explored an immigrant couple being nostalgic about a way of life they had come to love but had to abandon - a son torn between the place he had grown up with (America) and his unnatural connection with India that held him only by virtue of ancestry. It is about the trials of a displaced family desperately searching for an emotional anchor. It was just so beautiful. How lovely the metaphors of food were used to evoke the longing for home!

I loved The Namesake. I have recommended it to friends, and I thought the movie was faithful to the book. I will read this book again.

Loved both the book and the movie. Of course, like anything else, genre and writing style are a matter of taste, but I found Lahiri's writing to be absolutely beautiful and moving, and the story themes to be touching and enlightening.

'The Namesake' was a fabulous book and I loved it more than 'Interpreter of Maladies'. I am a fan of Lahiri. Her word play is so amazing and the way she details every scene, food, place and situation stimulates my senses and evoke a picture of yourself becoming a true omniscient, invisible presence throughout the course of the story. She made me fall to adore the Bengalee culture, the yearnings of the diaspora, people living out their past inside their heads. I would love to go for another read of the book!

It was an okay read for me. Not something I'd like to reread. However, I did enjoy it when I read it.

Read this book a few years back and i do remember that i could not put this down until i read the last page.
The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri

I love reading every book by the author. I enjoyed The Namesake!

I enjoyed the book, but I agree, Interpreter of Maladies was better. The reason Namesake is worth reading is that with the plethora of Indians writing literary fiction, the themes are starting to all blend together, and in Namesake, we get to see a different aspect of the immigrant experience -- that of the first-generation Indian born in the States (like myself).

I have to agree with Sheryl, I loved this book! Especially as someone who has been an immigrant, I felt I really connected with the characters.

Beautiful story. Loved it . But felt it ended abruptly after the Moushami affair episode...felt as if Jumpa was getting tired and wanted the story to end.

It has been a while since I read this book, but I do remember that is was pleasant reading and would enjoy reading it again.

I am hosting my book club's discussion of this book and have been struggling with it. It kept my attention, but I thought it was only okay...not great. Definitely NOT a second read one.

Its a story of a life..nothing superficial just a honest story and handled in a very matures way. Nice book.

worth reading, i got touched by the story...

I thought it was beautifully written but I just didn't get interested in the story. I thought the movie was better.

I just had to put this book down. In fact I archived it on my Nook. Archiving unfinished books is never my practice, as I am always sure my mood or position will change and I will take a second look at the book. Actually I do archive books that I find were really poorly written. However, I never got into this book. It was not poorly written; however, I felt as if the book was a plot summary. With rare exception, I did not feel as though I had been transported into the book. I felt I was being told about their adventures.

Lisa Schuttler Summarily a big plot summary' is an apt description. I can't enhance on that. Beautifully written, yes, but a novel, no, she didn't make it that far. ...more

What a fabulous read! I am fascinated with stories dealing with second generation Indians living in America. It is as if they are caught between two worlds. Not too many stories like this is told, and the author does a wonderful job weaving two cultures together.

Namesake is definitely worth reading!

i liked the book.

I loved the book The Namesake. It is definitely one of my favorite books. The movie with Kal Penn is great too. I am fascinated with books about other peoples' cultures especially people from India.
