Micah Children's book:
The story was about Ma and Pa. It was so cold that winter that their words froze and they had to thaw them in the frying pan to speak to each other. That's about all I can remember :(

inaword | 149 comments That sounds like a line from one of the Little House books. Little House in the Big Woods, or The Long, Long Winter, maybe... possibly from one of the others.

This sounds so familiar. I hope someone knows.

Apparently that's also an old weather joke - "our words froze in midair and we had to put them in a frying pan
to thaw them so we hear what we were talking about".

I believe that it is also something that happens in one of the Rootabaga Stories by Carl Sandburg. He published several books of these stories, so it could be in any of them. Unfortunately I don't really remember many of the stories (I read them almost half a century ago, so figure I can be forgiven for that.)

I remember this situation from an old tall tale book about Paul Bunyan when I was a kid in the 60s.

Makes me think of Paul Bunyan too. From a telling of "Babe the Blue Ox:"

Well now, one winter it was so cold that all the geese flew backward and all the fish moved south and even the snow turned blue. Late at night, it got so frigid that all spoken words froze solid afore they could be heard. People had to wait until sunup to find out what folks were talking about the night before.

Pamela Love | 1510 comments Words needing to be unfrozen also happens in one of the McBroom books by Sid Fleischman. I think it's McBroom's Zoo.Mc Broom's Zoo

Frozen words also happen in Grandpa's Farm by James Flora.
