Sanchox | 2 comments Many years ago, when I was a mere high school student (late 1990's), I found a sci-fi anthology full of short stories in my english class. I enjoyed it a bunch, and of course it spurred a great passion for sci-fi in general. I would love to find the book again, as two shorts have stayed in my mind all these years.

The first short I remember was about a ship in the distant future, most importantly, a black "worm" appeared on the ship... I feel like the majority of the story was written from the worm's perspective. I remember the worm crawling through the mechanics of the ship, talking to itself about its predicament. I don't really have any more concrete details, it is a ghost of a memory now... I figure a small black worm as one of the main characters might spark someone else's memory.

The second story was about a guy who figured out how to slow down time by moving faster. I seem to remember the story taking place in the 30s or 50s, and the guy burning himself from moving to quickly. He would watch regular things unfold through the course of the day such as a milkman delivering the milk, or a kid riding by on a bike. I don't have much more.

Any ideas? I feel like the anthology must have been from the 80's or earlier... I am almost certain it was a paperback with a dark blue cover. some sort of space scene likely. Would love to revisit those stories with my current brain!

Andy | 2124 comments The worm story might be "Green Patches" (aka "Misbegotten Missionary") by Isaac Asimov http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Pa... - it features an animal hiding out on a space ship disguised as a bit of wire, with some of the story told from the creatures point of view. It's been collected in a bunch of places (see this list http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cg...).

Sanchox | 2 comments I think you have pushed me in the right direction. While browsing the list of books the story had been published in, Heinlein's collection "Tomorrow, the Stars" leapt out at me. I have a strong belief that this is the collection I was looking for. I can't find a digital version of it to purchase or a comprehensive set of descriptions for the stories within, but I feel this is it. I will order a copy from amazon and post back after I get a chance to peruse it. Thank you so much for your insight!

Andy | 2124 comments Excellent. The other story you're looking for might be "The Report on the Barnhouse Effect" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Report_o... by Vonnegut, which is in the Heinlein collection

Cornelia Shields | 52 comments Right now I can't think of the title of the story about moving fast but the author is H. G. Wells.

Andy | 2124 comments Cornelia: The story by Wells about moving fast is "The New Accelerator"

Sanchox sent me a PM back--he can't get into mark anything, but it is solved. As soon as he tells me the correct book I'll let everyone know and move this down to Solved
