Book Festival's 2013!

The Atlanta area has a great book festival held on Labor Day weekend every year. It's called the AJC Decatur Book Festival and it's the largest independent book festival in the country. The festival is full of great things to do from author readings and signings to poetry slams, cooking demonstrations from cookbook authors, a parade, workshops and lots and lots of children activities from face paintings and readings. In addition, there's good food and music as well. Decatur is a big reading community with probably more independent book stores (still going strong I might add) per capita than possibly anywhere in the country. It just feels good to be around other book lovers who are passionate about books and also to get up and personal with your favorite authors.
I especially enjoy collecting bookmarks (a hobby) from the various booths and kiosks along with other freebies from totes or book fans, pens etc..from publishers or one of the media outlets like NPR or C-Span.
Come and visit us, we'd love to have you!

I had conflicts this year and couldn't attend. I really wanted to see Gilbert King (Devil in the Grove). In years past at this particular festival, I've met Tayari Jones, Dolen Perkins-Valdez, James Patterson, James McBride, Bernice McFadden, Dr. Elizabeth Nunez, Preston Allen, and many more.

Yes, this book festival has had a good number of authors of color increase over the years. I enjoyed this book festival when I lived in the area.
James McBride has a new book releasing in Aug - just in time for his reading here. It is an historical fiction.

The Texas book Festival (http://www.texasbookfestival.org) started in 1995. Approximately 200 authors participate each year. CSpan’s BookTV includes the Texas Book Festival as one of its stops in showcasing book festivals from around the country. In 2006 the featured speaker was a skinny guy from Chicago with a funny name. The Texas Rangers took a lot of pride in escorting him around.
Thanks for starting this discussion group.
Peggy, that's quite an impressive list of authors for the African American Book Festival. Thanks for sharing....Got me stumped, however, with that skinny guy from Chicago with the funny name. Hmmm, let me think for a sec.....

The POTUS for sure.

Atx. African American Book Festival
The Austin African American Book Festival (http://www.aabookfest.com/) held in June, 2013 was the best one yet. The activity’s appetizer was a reception held the night before. The featured authors had a chance to meet members of the Austin community as well as the festival organizers. Anita Richmond Bunkley was part of the first festival (in 2007) and her return was welcomed. Terry McMillan spoke of how her friend Bernice McFadden spoke highly of her visit to the 2012 Austin African American Book Festival. Ms. McFadden’s words encouraged her to accept the 2013 invitation.
The festival began in the George Washington Carver Library with 5 Austin area authors (Karen Brown, Lynda Coleman, Kanisha Grayson, Sherry Ransom, and Shirley Sprinkles) presenting brief pitches about their works. Terry McMillan attended this opening session and provided words of encouragement to the authors that presented and aspiring authors. Anita Richmond Bunkley followed with a discussion of her new book A THOUSAND STEPS. Extra chairs had to be pulled in to accommodate the crowd. After Ms. Bunkley there were two discussion sessions of recent books – THE WARMTH OF OTHER SUNS by Isabel Wilkerson and A DEEPER LOVE: THE PORSCHE SANTIAGE STORY by Sister Souljah. Both discussions were led by professors from Austin Community College. Ms. Souljah had been the 2011 festival featured author.
The activities moved to the George Washington Carver Museum for Dr. Michael Collins (Associate Professor - English, Texas A&M) discussion of his work UNDERSTANDING ETHERIDGE KNIGHT. Terry McMillan was the final presenter for the festival. Ms. McMillan spoke to a capacity filled theater and overflow section. Ms. McMillan read from her new book WHO ASKED YOU? She also took questions from the audience and later signed copies of her books.
