I am; unfortunately, still no closer. I've been checking my favorite used bookstore, which tends to be the best and most knowledgeable source for things like this. Even they are stumped. Wargh!

Assassin's Apprentice... It has the fool, who if from memory, was very close to the King. But the first King wasn't really the focus of th book. The Fool kept up thru h series tho.

It focuses on a set of twins - one a truth teller, the other a secret keeper - but they do briefly meet the King's truth teller.
It's from the mid 2000s though, not the '80s.

Which led to both of us remembering very vaguely reading a book or possibly a series, fantasy novels, in which the king has a "truth teller" whose sole purpose is to point out unfair or unreasonable decisions the king makes. It wasn't the focal point of the story, so I don't think it was "the truth teller" series. I would hazard a guess that they might have been written sometime in the 80's.
Sorry, this is about as vague as one can get...but thought if anybody stood a chance of knowing what we were remembering reading, it would be here!
