Vikki (silverstarz) Duties

- keeping a Google Spreadsheet that all members can view
- communicating with a NBRC Moderator
- communicating with all Team Members
- making sure Team Members are staying active
- notifying the NBRC Mod if someone drops out
- have effective and kind (this is a game, remember) on-line communication skills
to help members having trouble
- making sure Team Members belong on your team
- posting weekly status updates/reminders
- dealing with minor issues that arise
- post little challenges within challenges, if desired.

I'd suggest splitting some of these up and sharing some....

message 4: by Vikki (new)

Vikki (silverstarz) Duties to share...

- communitcating with team members
- communication skills
- dealing with minor issues

Maybe share "mini-challenges" unless anyone is good at coming up with ideas for them.

message 5: by Vikki (new)

Vikki (silverstarz) Which leaves....

- Google spreadsheet
- communicating with nrbc mod
- making sure team members are active
- notifying nrbc mod of dropouts
- weekly updates/reminds

If there's 3 of us I'd suggest splitting it

1: Google speadhseet
2: making sure members are active & notifying of drop-outs
3: communicating with mods & weekly updates/reminders

Any other thoughts???

message 6: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) Sounds good to me! I can work on the google spreadsheet since I've started making one and I use spreadsheets a lot. Unless someone else really wants to do it.

I agree with sharing mini challenges. We can use this thread or make another one to think of ideas as we go. I've never come up with a challenge before but here are some simple ideas to get us started

Books/ Authors that start with A (for April)
Purple cover challenge
Something relating to Earth day?
TBR challenges (I know some people really like those)

message 7: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Sorry guys I'm late....busy day/weekend! Didn't realize I'd be called upon to help co-captain! Please let me know what I can help with. I'm not really good with google spreadsheets and images (but will do my best to learn/help if needed!). I can do #2, make sure members are active/notifying of drop-outs. And I'll help out any other way I can.

message 8: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Do we want to do weekly mini challenges or monthly? I think starting with something "purple" related might be nice because of our team name.

message 9: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) I agree starting with a Purple challenge would be a good idea to get everything started. Maybe do a monthly and shorter minis (as frequently as we can think of them?)?

message 10: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) I was just looking through a list of bizarre April holidays and want to just brainstorm some mini challenge ideas here. Let me know what you think. I've done challenges but never started one!!

April 25th Take a chance day
-read a book genre that is new to you / you don't usually read
April 22nd Earth day
-cover challenge with some sort of scenery

Also maybe we could do some sort of getting to know the team members thing

Wendelin (Alex) | 97 comments Hi guys,

Just saw The Glorious Calling of Gloriousness - sorry to be late, I've been without Internet for a couple of days.

I don't know if I'm any good with Google Spreadsheets (have never tried), but to everything else: Yes.

Challenge ideas... I love the bizzare days thingy :D

> Following Rebbeca's read a book genre that's new/unusual to you: Read a book from an author new to you
...
We could even do a month like one week "Read an unusual/new to you book genre", the next week "A new author" and so on.

> Purple Purpliness of Purple: A colour challenge - purple as in Purple Mountain's Majesty

> Purple Mountain's Majesty - read books that have something to do with that awesome title ( no idea how they should have something to do through..)

> Fastest Week --> Read as many books as you can in one week

I'm for the getting to know the team members thing, too. In Round I were so many people in one group that this sort of thing wouldn't have worked... But then most in my group already knew each other (which isn't that great when one's one of the newbies D:)

But what could that thing be? I mean, I bet we aren't all in the same timezone, so it has to be something that doesn't live from everyone posting as fast as they can... Mmh.

(edit: Seems like html and I won't be friends anytime soon^^)

message 12: by Vikki (new)

Vikki (silverstarz) I'm happy enough to do the weekly updates and communicate with Mods etc.

Like the idea of a purple challenge - in Team c last time we'd a colour a week theme challenge going for a while - how many books with a certain colour cover you could read.

Along the team name lines - any book about royalty, or with a reference to royalty/majesty etc in the title?

message 13: by Wendelin (Alex) (new)

Wendelin (Alex) | 97 comments Then I'll look after the group members, if that's okay?

Lol. That's exactly where I got the idea from - I just wasn't able to participate last time.

Sounds good. Plus, any book with mountains on the cover? Spell the title out (with beginning of title/author name)?

For getting to know each other - maybe everyone could say something about themselves? Or someone posts a question and someone else answers and poses the next question and so one?

message 14: by Wendelin (Alex) (last edited Apr 14, 2013 11:53AM) (new)

Wendelin (Alex) | 97 comments Double post ahoi.

I'm currently writing everyone about the sistergroup as requested by the Mods.

edit: Done. I think I've got everyone.

message 15: by Vikki (new)

Vikki (silverstarz) I like the the idea of the questions... and maybe also ask everyone to do a quick intro in their first post.

message 16: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Yes, I like the idea of questions too to get to know each other.

message 17: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) I agree I think that would be a great idea.

message 18: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Rebecca - I checked out the team spreadsheet. Can only you edit/update it? I changed my goal to 100 and I noticed on our team page that some of our members have finished books. Didn't know if I could help update or how that worked.

message 19: by Rebecca (last edited Apr 14, 2013 05:02PM) (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) Yeah sorry I was in the car for most of the day driving home today, updating it as we speak.

Nancy, have you made your bookshelf yet or are you going to continue using "http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/..." ? I'm just trying to get everyone's shelves up there.

message 20: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Yes Rebecca, I'm going to continue to use my tower team reads shelf. And I didn't ask to make you update it now! I was just wondering if it was only acessible to you and if you had to do it. :)

message 21: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) No don't worry Nancy! I was just saying it was funny because I opened up the spreadsheet to edit it and saw your comment, so I thought it was a funny coincidence!

message 22: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) Also captains can you PM me your email addresses, if that's okay so I can give you all permission to edit the google spreadsheet :)

message 23: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) I definitely think we should do a purple covers mini challenge, maybe to start out. After digging through my TBR list, I think we may have to be lenient about how much purple is required on the cover, because its not a commonly used color, at least in my books/

message 24: by Vikki (new)

Vikki (silverstarz) I think any noticeable purple should be allowed. I think I already have access to edit the spreadsheet as I edited in my shelf yesterday...

message 25: by Nancy (new)

Nancy We can also link to the list(s) at listopia that have purple covers when we make the announcement. Not quite sure how to do that, but I was perusing the lists of "purple" covers they have there.

I got the e-mail from Rebecca. Haven't had a chance to try opening it/editing yet!

message 26: by Wendelin (Alex) (new)

Wendelin (Alex) | 97 comments Just sent Rebecca my mail.

message 27: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) Thanks guys! I have the setting of the google spreadsheet set so all the captains can edit (if they want to) and everyone else can view it.

I think we still haven't heard from Reed or Sarah Jordan.

message 28: by Wendelin (Alex) (new)

Wendelin (Alex) | 97 comments Yep to Reed and Sarah. I sent them a mail yesterday, but they haven't answered yet.

message 29: by Rebecca (last edited Apr 17, 2013 06:49AM) (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) Had some down time at work so here is a draft of our purple challenge. Feel free to change anything around, I just kinda of started typing away.

Do you guys think we should start with this mini, when everyone has joined up and such? Let me know what you thing whenever you get a chance.

I can "captain" this one (since my free time may be decreasing in the near future)

description

Purple Purpliness of Purple:
A color challenge - purple as in Purple Mountain's Majesty

Welcome all to team Purple Mountain's Majesty! To celebrate the start of this team challenge, your captains are bringing you a mini challenge. Hopefully this will get everyone motivated and excited for this upcoming year.

Challenge
Read as many books as you can that have PURPLE on the cover! Any amount of purple will count.

**Bonus points if the word "Purple" or any other shades of purple are in the title.**

Duration: April 17th - 30th 2013

Note: When posting a qualified book: Make sure to post the cover and mention that it's for the Purple Mini challenge, so we can make sure everything is counted.

message 30: by Vikki (new)

Vikki (silverstarz) If we're only waiting on Reed & Sarah Jordan then I think we could start anytime... if they join over the next day or so then can still count any books finished since the start date.

How long are we gonna run it for??

message 31: by Rebecca (last edited Apr 16, 2013 12:42PM) (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) Not sure. Maybe for the rest of April? Or do you all think it should be shorter?

Also if we don't hear from them soon maybe we should let the Mods know?

message 32: by Wendelin (Alex) (new)

Wendelin (Alex) | 97 comments Rebecca, that's one awesome challenge! Rest of April sounds good to me.

Sarah just friended me, I think, she'll be there.
Also yep to informing the Mods if we don't hear from Reed anytime soon.

message 33: by Nancy (new)

Nancy I agree, the rest of April sounds good!

message 34: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Rebecca - I wanted to let you know that I changed my bookshelf name (I also let the moderators know in the "let us know your bookshelf name" thread. It was tower team reads, but is now purple mountains majesty. I've comepleted my first book so far, yeah! and it's showing up correctly on my goal page. If you wouldn't mind changing the hyperlink for your spreadsheet that would be great!

message 35: by Vikki (new)

Vikki (silverstarz) I'd say give Reed to Sunday, if there's no response then let the mods know.

Rest of April sounds ok to me.

message 36: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) Ok I'll update the spreedsheet and post the challenge now! Excited to get everything started.

message 37: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Hey girls....there's a poll in the Impotant updates thread with a poll as to what day/time would be best for status updates. I didn't think that I saw any of our team captains had voted and not sure who we decided (if we did) who was going to be in contact w/the mods. Does anyone want to do this? I don't mind. Just wasn't sure if anyone else had said they were going to.

message 38: by Rebecca (last edited Apr 19, 2013 06:43AM) (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) Scrolling up I think Vikki said she'd do the mod updates

I didn't answer the poll because I didn't want to answer for someone else. :)

Also any ideas for a May challenge?

message 39: by Wendelin (Alex) (last edited Apr 19, 2013 07:26AM) (new)

Wendelin (Alex) | 97 comments Let's brainstorm:

- A Fastest Week ("Read as many books as you can in one week")? Maybe even as a regular challenge like 1 week every two months or something?

- An "Unusual month" (in need of a better title, couldn't think of one): One week a bookgenre new/unusual to you, the next a new author, eh... there has to be some more stuff like that should we decide to do that... Well.

- What's special in May? ´Round here exists the tradition of setting a tree with messages on it in the garden of your girlfriend. Romances? Worldbuilding?

Mmh. That's currently all I can think of. What d'you think?

message 40: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Off the top of my head.....along the lines of April Showers bring May Flowers, maybe a flower theme either on the cover or flower name in title?

Cinco de Mayo, Mother's Day, and Memorial Day are also all celebrated in May so maybe something with those holidays???

Or go with month of May themes:
Gemstone: emerald
Zodiac: Taurus/Gemini
Birth Flower: Lily of the Valley

I just checked Wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May

and there's a whole bunch of other special days and heritage months -South Asian, Jewish American, Mental Health Awareness, etc. So there are a lot of directions we can choose!

I think it should be a month long challenge vs. weekly at this point to give people time to get books and read them.

message 41: by Wendelin (Alex) (new)

Wendelin (Alex) | 97 comments You've got a point, @ Nancy! More time to get books...
I think, it could be useful to post the challenges half a week (?) before their start.

Flowers --> spelling out names of flowers (with titles, author name,...)?

If we go after special days... Mmh. To Mother's day something with a heart? A mother as prota?

message 42: by Rebecca (last edited Apr 19, 2013 07:55AM) (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) Those are some great ideas. I agree to a month long challenge because it will also allow people to read books for the challenge AND any other books they want to read that month that don't fit in.

I like flowers and/or a holiday themed one? I need to think more about ones that would be easy to think of books for.

message 43: by Vikki (new)

Vikki (silverstarz) Rebecca wrote: "Scrolling up I think Vikki said she'd do the mod updates

I didn't answer the poll because I didn't want to answer for someone else. :)

Also any ideas for a May challenge?"

Yeah that was me, hadn't noticed that topic as hadn't been online much over the past day or 2 there. Will check it out

message 44: by Wendelin (Alex) (last edited Apr 19, 2013 01:06PM) (new)

Wendelin (Alex) | 97 comments Looks like the first week in May'll be a read-a-thon http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1.....

So, if we do something flowery, it'll be 3 weeks (or 4 if our theme's flowery..)

message 45: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) Yeah very true. We could pick a theme and extend it for the month or do a separate team one after the read-a-thon.

Also I will be at a work conference during pretty much the whole read-a-thon, but hopefully I will get a good amount of reading done while I fly across the country and back. However, I won't be able to organize this one

message 46: by Nancy (new)

Nancy I can organize this one. I have started setting up a spreadsheet in Google Docs. This is the first time I've tried doing one. I used Rebecca's as a guide. I hope everything looks the way it was supposed to and I didn't mess up the first spreadsheet when figuring things out! If you guys can PM me your e-mail addresses I can share with you so you can view and let me know if anything needs to be changed!

message 47: by Nancy (new)

Nancy I know Vikki is communicating with mods. I saw on the thread about updating page counts and clicking the members links before the weekly update. Vikki are you able to do that or do you need help?

message 48: by Rebecca (last edited Apr 24, 2013 11:13AM) (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) Thanks for updating the Mods Vikki.

I know that when I update the spreadsheet I check to make sure everyone's books are >/= 160 pages. So if they are wondering, whatever the "last updated" date is its also the last page check. Though it certainly wouldn't hurt to have someone else spot check if they really want to.

Also, most of my weekends are super busy (and I'm usually away), so I don't usually update the spreadsheet until Monday morning. I'm not sure when you need to update the mods by, but I just wanted to let you know that the weekend might not be completely up-to-date.

message 49: by Rebecca (last edited Apr 24, 2013 11:17AM) (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) I almost forgot... I am traveling to Seattle from May 4-9th for a work conference. I don't think I will be taking my laptop, so I won't be able to update the spreadsheet during that time and I don't know how much I'll be able to access the group from my phone (depending on how much "down" time I have between meetings).

If someone else wants to update the spreadsheet while I'm gone feel free, it's pretty easy! If not I can update it while I'm back, as long as everyone knows it won't be accurate :)

((I will be traveling a good amount during May, so I apologize if I get a little behind on updating))

message 50: by Wendelin (Alex) (last edited Apr 28, 2013 06:51AM) (new)

Wendelin (Alex) | 97 comments On the subject of leader boards: I just posted one as I find them very useful. Sorry for not asking here first, I didn't realise that maybe I should do that until after posting -.- ... Anyway, would you guys agree to doing that once a week to let people know how the challenge's coming along?
