Rabecca - I missed this weekends update. Was planning on doing it Monday morning my time, but stuff came up & never got online. Don't worry if it's not up to date, I'll be going through checking the shelves anyway so it's as up to date as possible when I post. Wendelin - that sounds ok to me.
Hello fellow captains!I just updated the spreadsheet and checked page numbers and we're at 145 books!
I know summer can be a really busy time with lots of fun stuff to do outside and can sometimes cause a lack of reading (I know this happens to me!) Is there anything we can brainstorm to motivate people to read?
It looks like those participating in the RaT enjoyed it so maybe we can think of more fun ways to get people to read. We could always ask the team if they prefer "general" read as much as you can challenge, or prefer themed ones?
How was Seattle, Rebecca?^^Well, I saw one team having an inner-team challenge (I think they called it "Fastest reader of the week" or something)... Maybe that's something to think about.
Yes, seemed like the RaT got people... Hhm, but why?
[ I'm sorry, if that post doesn't make sense... No gurantee for my English when I'm sick :D]
I agree we should have an inner-team challenge. As for me, I think I'll have more time for reading over the summer, with vacations/relaxing time! @ Wendelin - I think competition always motivates people...especially team-against-team!
Should we revisit some of our original brainstorm ideas or try to come up with something else for a theme?
I think the less "specific" the challenge, the easier it will be for people to find books and be motivated to participate.Just to throw out some ideas we could try:
~TBR (spring-cleaning) challenge
*extra points for how long it's been on your shelf.
~page number challenge
~pick-a-book from someone else's bookshelf.
~new author challenge
~read a series challenge (or read part of a series)
~Books/Authors that start with M (for may)
(These could be used at any time really)
I also like the May themed ideas we talked about before, though we are running out of may. So maybe June themes?
hmm I'll keep thinking since these are pretty generic challenges
I like the TBR (spring-cleaning) challenge (I sure have loads of books that have been sitting on my shelves!). I agree that the less specific the challenge, the easier it is to participate since some members are also participating in other challenges and other groups. Will research some June themes!
Thanks so much mods. Are we (the captains) supposed to input the info onto the sheet each week? (I know, a little late to be asking! :0
No, we update the Sunday Update spreadsheet. But we wouldn't mind looking at your spreadsheets. It really, really helps if you have already checked page counts and compared their TT bookshelf to their "read" bookshelf. Plus clicked on everyone's "view books." ☺
Just updated the spreadsheet. I only saw 1 book that I think could be added to a PMM bookshelf; hopefully I caught everything.
Hey captains -Have you guys checked out the June/July 7% Challenge? Looks like a lot of fun....guess we don't have to come up with a June challenge! LOL!!
I'll look and see if there is somewhere to post it.Here is it:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/c...
I think it's always the same hyperlink, so once they have our link it will automatically show the update each time.
Thanks I posted it!I looked at the 7% challenge and its looks slightly complicated, but we can do it! I just made a thread for this challenge in our PMM section:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...
I'm also going to add a spreadsheet to help keep things organized (I like spreadsheets if you couldn't tell ;) ) and when it's ready I'll post it there too!
Mmh.. The 7% challenge seems to be quite complicated - might throw people off. Maybe it'd be a good idea to combinate? Like, first comes the 7& challenge, but everyone who doesn't compete(+ the 7&er if they can manage) still got the team-whide challnge? To motivate people? It'be a lot to organize, but... Just an idea. *shrug*
[If we pull that off we maybe should split - like one captain for whateverchallenge, another for 7& and the third and forth as jumpers? Or ask the whole team what they think about that first?...]
Crazy ideas out.
Sorry Wendelin what do you mean? I just posted our own thread for the 7% challenge, but its still the same challenge that the mods posted. We don't have two challenges going on right now just that one.
I know :) I just thought that if many of the team choose not to participate with the 7% (as it seems to be the case right now) we maybe could do a tandem - 7% and own challenge - to motivate people. Sorry, seems like my thoughts were racing ahead of my writing.[Edited for clarity]
Hey captains -Rebecca can you link a copy of our team spreadsheet to this thread http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...
Also, do we want to decide on the team challenge for August and then post it to the group. I haven't gotten any feedback from the group. Figured we might present them with a couple of ideas and then take a vote.
Nope, looks good. My mistake. I saw the separate messages w/team links and didn't see the whole list in the first message w/the links.@ Rebecca - obviously disregard the request! :)
Thanks, saw your PM and that the changes were made (thanks Nancy). Also I think we are supposed to do the weekly update in this thread now:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...
Which I believeeee Vikki is doing, unless I'm mixing it up.
As far as we can tell, Vikki hasn't been on GRs since May 31st. She joined the Captains' Group May 31st, but hasn't posted anything.
Nancy and I finished PMM update. We'll be posting the final very, very soon.

@ Rebecca - I hadn't seen the weekly updates from Vikki so I had started posting them for the last week or two. I don't mind and I know you're helping with book counts and page number checks. Wasn't sure which thread to post in! But I know the mods got it!

Nancy, Rebecca, and Vikki: Please see this post. We'd love to hear from you on the topic.

I meant to start brainstorming August challenge ideas, but today was super busy. Will try to think and have something soon. I think it's harder to think of a shorter challenge (is this one 2 weeks?)

The Captains/Co-Captains are voting on the length of the August Challenge here . Regardless of the time length, it should only entail about 25-30% of your average reading in a two week period. The Mods haven't decided on the exact percent.
FTY: Each Team reads about 25.9 books a week. Times two = 51.9 books. Some pecent - 25-30% - of that.

Some random ideas for August:Some TBR challenge (we keep mentioning it).
Books/Authors that start with A.
August birthstones are onyx and peridot (green color), so we could do a cover color challenge.
Spell it out?
I like the TBR idea. You're right, we keep mentioning it and I'm sure we all have books that we'd like to get read. Plus, it's really flexible. I liked your previous idea of more points for the longer they've been on your shelf. My prob. is I'm not sure how long some of my books have been on the shelf!
Hmm, maybe we could use the Goodreads shelf. Or maybe publication date? We'd have to work something out that would work for everyone.
We could float the idea with the team to see how they feel about a TBR challenge and/or some of the others. That way we can hopefully get high participation from our team and they can do something fun :)
I've been probably extremely slow for the last few days, but what do you two mean with TBR? My mind keeps coming up with words, but they make absolutely no sense at all.. and I have the feeling, I know what it means -.-
*headdesk* It's like maths - once there's a solution, everything's clear :D Thanks!A TBR challenge sounds indeed good.
The TBR challenge sounds good...we should try to work out the details though. Not sure how involved the challenge has to be to get approved. If you guys can continue to check/update the spreadsheet for the seven percent challenge and check and update our main team books read it would be really helpful. Not sure how much longer I will be without a computer and it's really hard to do spreadsheets on a kindle!
No problem Nancy, I've been updating the main team spreadsheet for books read. I can look over the 7% challenge one as well today
So I was just skimming the topic in the Captains Group about the August Challenge. It looks like a regular TBR challenge may not be enough of a challenge. The mods are looking for something with more depth I guess. We can do a TBR but will need to make it more complicated I think. hmmm
As I'm already more or less helping out on the 7% challenge sheet, I could do that sheet if you like, Rebecca. The series challenge someone mentioned in the August thread sounds interesting - maybe a TBR only with books from series? Or stand alones? Or trilogies/quartetts /whatever for a harder challenge?
On the other side we could do something with categories like this challenge - seems to me like filling those categories at 7% got some people really motivated (than again that could be because people got more time now to read...). So.. Maybe an August challenge with books featuring something related to August? Spell-it-out + things we've got from wikipedia?
Thanks Wendelin! You've definitely been keeping up with that spreadsheet a lot, thanks for making it.I agree with the August challenge with categories would be fun. As long as it's not too complicated. I know a few people were turned off by the 7% challenge because of all the categories and options within the categories. However, I agree that many people seemed more motivated by this challenge.
Maybe only a few different categories (since it's going to be a shorter challenge).
Some Ideas
Spell-It-Out: August?
"A" category = books/authors that start with A
Cover challenge = birth stone colors? Summer colors?
etc.
@ Rebecca - I was just perusing the August Challenge thread and was also going to omment that a TBR challenge doesn't seem like enough. What about a genre challenge? Try to read a book from as many different genres as possible?
Or an August Summer Challenge:
Cover: Read a book with a predominantly yellow cover (like the sun), picture of sun on cover, or picture of beach or other summer activity on cover.
Spell it Out - AUGUST or SUMMER
AUGUST - Since August is the 8th month, read a book that is the 8th in a series, has a green (peridot - the birthstone) cover.
TITLE: Read a book with "August" or "Summer" or "Beach" in the title
*I came up with a bunch of categories don't know if it's too much can add/delete or not do at all....just an idea!
If we don't want to be original, we can use another team's challenge! :)
There is already a team with a series challenge....which I do like. There's also an around the world challenge.
Hmmm they all sound like good ideas! I guess we should decide if we want to have a challenge with a bunch of different categories, or just one overarching "theme".
Mmh... I guess, the advantage of a bunch of different categories would be that they allow quite different books to be read, so everyone will find their corner. On the other side are the people who were turned of by the 7% - if we want them in, we can't go too over board.
Lol. Or we could do the easy thing: stealing all the team challenges to turn them into one extremely big challenge :D
