Susan Sink Is the only criterion the sexuality? I think kids can handle or just not pay attention to a lot of sexuality in books. If they're not interested, they won't care and it will just go over them. But this book promotes a certain world view and values, and I wonder if anyone thinks about that when considering age appropriateness?

message 102: by Marisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Marisa Ferreira I think it's not even about the ''sexuality'' and the the love aspect of the series. It's about the message of the book, the political sistem, violence, suicide, the dystopian world itself. It depends on how mature you are, if you can really understand the book or not.

message 103: by Deanna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Deanna i would say 14,15 or 16.I read the books when i was 14

message 104: by Luzia (new) - rated it 5 stars

Luzia Kirschbaum I think 12 will be fine. I read it when I was 12, and there weren't any scenes that were not age appropriate :)

message 105: by Susan (new)

Susan Sink I totally agree, Kath. It's not about "scenes" being appropriate or not but the overall view of the world…

message 106: by Logan (new) - rated it 5 stars

Logan 12

Helen C uh, now

message 108: by Logan (new) - rated it 5 stars

Logan 12 because I read It in 6th grade and it wasn't bad.

message 109: by Sydney (new)

Sydney Youngman i read it when i was 11-12 and i'm really mature. i would recommend waiting til 13 or 14, in my opinion. parents, if your child wants to read it, i would recommend reading the series first before letting him/her read it. keep in mind that this is coming from a 12 year old!!!

Trenton when your born

message 111: by Emilie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Emilie I think you can read it when you´re 11-12, but I think you will like it more if you´re about 14-15 (I´m not sure, but I would´t have like it when I was 11)

message 113: by Ashley (new) - added it

Norah Alsultan I would say 13

message 119: by Sophia (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sophia Libetti 13 and up it's not a book children can read.

message 120: by Leah (last edited Oct 27, 2014 10:01PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Leah I'm reading it to my 8-year-old daughter. Yes, I'm skipping some of the more steamy scenes, which I would consider just fine for a 12-year-old or, for some (with parental approval) even younger. I'm also skipping scenes like the Edward butter knife scene, as I really don't want to be up all night dealing with her nightmares!

Still, I've read so many comments about younger kids not understanding the social commentary. This series gives adults a fantastic opportunity to begin discussions with the children in their lives about social responsibility, consequences for difficult choices as well as those that need to be made in the heat of the moment, and nature vs. nurture, to name just a few topics. Yes, I stop reading to discuss the content with her every few pages. Now, she will interrupt me when she wants to discuss her thoughts or if she doesn't understand something.

Adults, take advantage your time with younger readers to guide them. If not with this book, then with others that require high-level analysis. Push them to think even if you question their readiness. You might be pleasantly surprised. On another personal note, while my daughter can read at the level of this book, the two other reasons why I'm reading it to her is to help with her auditory learning skills and to model how to read dramatically.

Teens/Tweens, take advantage of quick-read books (like this one) and tell the adults in your life you'd like talk about what you've read. I know many other adults who "aren't into reading." See if you can get them to read more. I think I actually know more adults that don't read than kids that don't read. If you're on Goodreads to discuss books, I'm confident you can set an example FOR THEM!

Jason Li I'm 12 and I read it just last year. I think this book is perfect for people around my age. It doesn't matter significantly if you aren't at a sophisticated reading level. There are certain sections of the book that are a little sexual, but it's nothing a 11 or 12 year old like me can't handle.

Kaitlin favreau I think any middle schooler could read it

message 123: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina how much mentioning of sex is there? does the book describe sex between two partners? once or more than once? anyone remember where in the book this occurs? thank you. my 11 year old wants to read it. it could be a great opportunity to talk with her more about this subject but now i'm thinking she might be too young from most of the above comments.

message 124: by [deleted user] (new)

I read it when I was 11. Middle school, upper elementary (4,5) grade.

message 125: by Storm (new) - added it

Storm Arashi My mom read worse when she was even younger.

There's no sex in Divergent.

Bluebearry I read it when I was eleven. It matters how mature you are. trust me, im very mature

Adilynn Girardot I'm 13 and I read it this year.

REALLY???? I read it and I'm 1o. You heard me! 1-o,10. My freind is 10 too and she read it too

Careful what you say, you have to be at least thirteen to be on Goodreads. (Not saying you can't be here but watch what age you throw out)

message 131: by Lizzie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lizzie Mcclure I think you should be 14+ to fully understand the feelings of the characters and understand the book. I know younger have read it, but I disagree with that.

message 132: by emma (new) - rated it 5 stars

emma Probably 12.

message 133: by Ashley (new) - added it

Ashley Emma wrote: "Probably 12."

Emma wrote: "Probably 12."

I think 12 or 13

Cecilia Chione I believe it all really depends on maturity

message 135: by Tony (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tony Fulks YOU SHOULD READ IT WHEN YOU ARE MAYBE 94 YEARS OLD WHEN YOU ARE ALONE. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

message 136: by Ruby (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ruby Violence and romance don't always make a book inappropriate for younger readers. It's just that in Divergent Roth makes those elements very intense for the reader. And then the next books are even more intense. Thus I'd say one should read them at fifteen or so.

message 137: by Treva (new)

Treva It depends on the child's reading level,my 10 year old granddaughter really enjoyed it. It was recommended by her teacher along with "the Giver" and "The Hunger Games" as well as by her aunt who is a Children's Librarian . there is nothing in any of these books that a mature 10 year old who can read at that level should have a problem with. It depends on the reader not the age.

message 138: by Rose (new)

Rose I'm 36 and read it, loved it ! I allowed my 13 year old to read it, but would not have allowed a 10 year old. There is so much going on between the fractions, grief, love and sex a person needs a understanding of all of that so they could completely understand the wonderful dynamic of the books
Imo

message 139: by Bella (new)

Bella I am 11 and I LOVED the book. I think really any age can read it as long at they get the text structure.

message 140: by Hannah (new) - rated it 5 stars

Hannah Wasserman 11 was how old I was when I read it but I would say 11+ due to kissing

Madelyn Rose I would say 12+, but I read this book way too young :)

message 142: by Meraki (new)

Meraki I think above anywhere above 12, however they should probably have had some basic sex education first.

message 143: by [deleted user] (new)

I would go with the general PG 13. The views of the world it has is fascinating to me, but I'm not sure if a 10 year old would like reading about suicide and chaos. It just depends on the kid.

message 144: by [deleted user] (new)

Sabrina wrote: "how much mentioning of sex is there? does the book describe sex between two partners? once or more than once? anyone remember where in the book this occurs? thank you. my 11 year old wants to read ..."

There's no sex in it, but it is on the border of it. If you or your kid is okay with reading on the border of nudity, then I would think it would be fine. It is a YA book, and the thoughts are a little intense. It just depends on how mature you think your kid is.

Taitlyn Wells I think that depends on your book preference and how mature you are.

message 146: by Sara (new) - added it

Sara I read Divergent, Insurgent, Allegiant, and Four when I was 9

message 147: by Queen Tori (new)

Queen Tori I am currently 10 years old and I love Divergent. Yes, there is some maybe I guess "inappropriate " things in it, but I feel that I am mature enough and my dad is fine with me reading it. So, I do say 10+ because as you get younger, it gets more inappropriate for younger ages.

message 148: by Emily (new) - rated it 4 stars

Emily It depends on the maturity of the person and what they can handle. I read this in fifth grade, but I had read Harry Potter and Warriors before that so violence and other more mature themes didn't really bother me. I think that 12-13 is probably a good age.

message 149: by Gabriela (last edited Jun 17, 2017 12:33PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gabriela WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT? I read this when I was 11 and it was amazing. There wasn't anything in it that I hadn't heard before. I'd like to say that I'm mature for my age, but that would be a half lie. I'm actually hoping my 10 year old brother does read it. I think he would be interested in it and enjoy it a lot. Don't start asking if it is okay for anyone to read it. Anyone that's interested in it is probably old enough to read it. i'm sure if a five year old was reading the summary they wouldn't be interested in it.

message 150: by Storm (new) - rated it 4 stars

Storm That is a hard question. This is because the age that you should read or learn something varies per person. I read this when I was 11, but I have also always been more mature than the other kids my age.
