Christine (steeny) | 2 comments I added this book using the scan function on my mobile phone. The ISBN on back of the book doesn't match the listing that comes up, the cover is different and the number of pages is different (The edition listed has 288 pages, the book i have has 272 pages).

The copy i have with the ISBN 0679764011 but the description matches the edition with the ISBN 0394719662 that has 272 pages. No cover image is posted for this edition.

Sounds like an example of what we commonly call an alternate-cover edition.

Jozef Nakielski (jozef_nakielski) | 100 comments I wouldn't take the page numbers as being accurate, they're often wrong, especially if its been imported into the system.
Covers often change, some books have dozens of covers for the same ISBN
descriptions can be individual books, or an edition can be set to cover all editions until someone comes along and edits it to add one. OR someone could have added the wrong description.
Or of the cover has changed then its very likely that the description has changed too.
The problem is that we don't know and someone may have added that description and that cover to that isbn because that is what their copy is. Or as I said it could be a mistake. Without having every copy of the book we don't know. Therefore we're advised not to change it but to add an alternative cover. Just leave the ISBN clear and put alternative cover for ISBN number in the description.

Agreed, and if that were the only difference, I would change it. Given that the cover is also not a match, it's clearly an alt-cover situation.
